Cervical cancer vaccine for young women flies off shelves




Gardasil, the vaccine against cervical cancer currently recommended for girls and women aged nine to 26 years, is flying off drug store shelves across Canada.

Designed to protect women from cancer caused by the sexually-transmitted human papillomavirus, it was approved one year ago by Health Canada but must be prescribed by a doctor or nurse practitioner.

Hitman, this is good news indeed. Maybe it's a good idea to explain what papillomavirus is to those reading who've never heard of it. How common it is, how it is spread and what, if any, symptoms one will see when they have it.

This virus is underrated imo. Not enough people know about it and they should given that it is so closely tied to cervical cancer.

Human Papilloma virus has many different subtypes & they can cause different infections of skin & mucous membranes, the good part is that by large only 4 types have been associated with Cervical Cancer & not only Cervical but also by referring to the thread shared in the first post, oral cancer, anal cancer & penile cancer are all linked to HPV

The above images are examples of warts (corns) caused by HPV, they are very common & are prevalent globally, similar warts can develop in the anal region & on the penis as well which are sexually transmitted

That's good, but what are the odds of contracting this virus, especially if you're 9 and obviously most likely going to be sexually inactive.
And is the virus the main cause for cervical cancer?
Would this medicine help prevent cervical cancer if the cause was not from the virus?

HPV is easily transmitted. I think the aim of providing the vaccine to pre-pubescent girls is even though they are not sexually active they will soon be going through puberty and therefore they will have periods and if they don't wash their hands thoroughly before using a tampon they can still transmit the virus to themselves.

^^well thats my theory. The vaccine is still in phase III clinical trials for other reasons which I can't divulge. But we had a long meeting about how easily it is transmitted and why we have to handle the samples in certain ways to avoid contamination from our own hands.

Its been known for a long time that this disease is a major player is causing cervical cancer. The vaccine will not help if you get cervical cancer in other ways, the vaccine only targets HPV.

I agree no women should die of Cervical Cancer.

OMG HITMAN its soo good u brought this up, i heard about it went to my dr and i asked him if i should get it and that i want it, hes like r u sexually active i said no but u never know type of thing, he looked at me im crazy and said i shouldnt get it

i met one egyptian doktor came to university of manitoba medical school in manitoba canada. i heard that she was studying cause of cervical cancer and the rates increase dramaticaly from women who have multiple intimate partners. women with only one partner were relatively safe.
