Al Jabal al Akhdar lies at the heart of Al Hajar, the mountains of northern Oman
its At about 10,000 feet above sea levels the highest peak in the Eastern Hajar mountains and one of the highest points in the Sultanate. The thrilling views from the Jabal, as well as its balmy climate, are among the qualities that distinguish it as one of the top tourism spots in Oman.
Night temperatures can drop below zero centigrade in winter from November until March, and snow is not unknown. Conversely, the climate is very pleasant in the height of summer and the jabal is a welcome retreat for campers with four wheel drive vehicles.
The Jabal receives an annual average of 303 mm of rainfall. The higher planes of the mountain are densely populated with lush vegetations comprising fruit trees, flowers, shrubs,figs and pomegranates. which gives rise to the name. Some 54 nuclear communities sprinkled over different levels on the mountain, have clusters of farms growing pomegranates, apricots, peaches, cherries and walnuts.
Several major wadis drain Al Jabal al Akhdar: Wadis bani Awf, Sahtan and bani Kharus north to Al Batinah, and Wadi Ghul to the south.
perfume-making from flowers and weaving are another important source of income for the Jabal inhabitents.
The Desert Rose whose sweetly scented flowers are used in the making of rose water is unique to the Jabal. A great part of the Jabal consists of woodland, with Junipers, constituting the dominant species. Their leaves, soaked in locally made massaging oils, are very effective for the treatment of muscular pain and headache. Another commonly occurring tree in the woodland section of the Jabal is the Thorn Bush (Acacia Tortilis) whose leaves and pods provide livestock with regular fodder.

U know when's the ideal time to go?? Be there when it's raining... and wait for the rain to stop... after the rain u will see something u could never imagine would happen in real life... not only the great weather.... but the sky!!! I have been there during the rain... and after that I've seen a clear rainbow with purple clouds and a damned blue sky!!! and it really looks the way I described it... the exact colors... !!

I have been once to Jabal Akhdar (green mountain) during summer time and the weather there was cool . The season of 'rumaan' will start soon I guess. Now the road is fixed and it's all blacktop to the top . But visitors still need permission to enter.

I have never been in Jabal Al Akhdar. Just saw it from Afar , but even that , I don't remember being there. Inshallah I will suggest it to be our next destination.

AL JABAL al Akhdhar’s stone houses are a vestige of the primitive existence of inhabitants of the Green Mountain before the benefits of the Sultanate’s modern Renaissance began reaching these remote and rugged hills.
Scores of these settlements dot the mountainous countryside, the vast majority abandoned for the comfort and convenience of modern dwellings that have since sprung up in their shadow
Today, these atmospheric settlements offer a peek into the hardy lifestyles of the inhabitants of these mountains and their strong kinship with nature. Apart from the goats that sometimes shelter within them, these stone hamlets attract tourists and researchers as well, keen to study the primitive architecture and construction techniques of past generations.
Perhaps, the most striking of the Green Mountain’s ancient settlements is the stone hamlet in Dhan al Bisateen, some 15km from Saih Qatanah, the administrative centre of Al Jabal al Akhdhar.
The settlement clings to the precipitous edge of a ravine, offering some protection from the chilly winds that sweep through these mountains in winter. Temperatures are known to plunge to 5 degrees Celsius minus in winter.
Villagers with the nimbleness of mountain goats descend the mountain’s edge to reach the settlement, which consists of a cluster of houses built with rock and a traditional mud plaster called saruj. Some of these houses have been set into the recess of caves for added protection against the elements.
Primitive as they may seem, these homes are in fact built with walls about one metre thick and plastered well on the outside to keep the chill out. Trunks of the indigenous juniper tree, which is a unique feature of the Green Mountain’s natural heritage, are used to hold up the ceiling of tree branches and saruj.
Life in today’s modern times is a far cry from the hardship of their mountain existence prior to the Renaissance, says Mohammed bin Nasser al Owemri, a sprightly 60-year-old who led the Observer to Dhan al Bisateen. Residents of this settlement have since swapped their Spartan homes for the comfort of modern houses equipped with all amenities including heaters.
“The bitter winter cold keeps most people indoors especially during the January-February months. We had to keep wood fires burning to warm ourselves,” he said.
Clean drinking water was hard to come by in these barren mountains, Al Owemri noted. “Back in those days, we used to get our drinking water needs from stagnant ponds in wadis or caves.
When these sources ran dry, we had to venture out deeper into the countryside. But after good rains, most of these sources would ensure a reasonably good supply.”
Herding was the mainstay of the local economy then, and continues to be the case today. Little else can be undertaken in these rugged parts, although many residents travel to Saih Qatanah to work in government offices or are employed in Muscat or Nizwa.
Four-wheel-drive vehicles have supplanted the hardy donkeys in getting men and material to and from these mountains. Prior to the 1970s, local villagers sourced their essential needs from the souk in Nizwa, relying on donkeys to carry produce in both directions.
In Nizwa, they sold firewood, charcoal, goats and berries in exchange for foodstuff, textiles and household essentials. Strewn around these mountains are scores of such hamlets, once inaccessible, but now served by graded roads.
Keen to ensure that the inhabitants do not give up their traditional way of life and migrate to the towns and cities, the government has been improving access routes deep into the mountains.
Despite the remoteness of some of these settlements, the authorities have been quick to provide essential services. Water drums, placed at strategic points for the benefit of scattered settlements, are filled regularly by government tankers.

The weather is very good all through the year NOT just during summer
at winter times it gets very cold ....might reach 4c or some told me - degrees and at some areas it snows!!!

About the permission, I heard a good news that HM Sultan Qaboos issued instruction to allow anyone to enter without permission since the gate is handed over to ROP which was under army supervision. Anyone can confirm this?

and I was telling one of the foreigners about Jabal Akhdhar and the need for permission just few weeks back....he was abit hesitant because of such complicated issue...
Went to a trip to Al Jabal Al Akhdar with my friends in SQU
the trip was organized by the investment club, Collage of commerce and economics, Sultan Qaboos university.
Our leader and guide was a guy with a high Rank from the military (he asked that his name shouldnt be mentioned).

- we spent the 1st night in "Wadi mastal" near nakhal.
- Left the Wadi right After Al Fajr prayers and drove to "wakan" town.
- we started climbing the mountain from Wakan at 7.30, had 2 15-mins breaks in the way and made it to the top at 1.30 !
(the 6 most tiering hrs of my life!)
anyway here are some pics, the mountain had many many other beautiful scenes that we couldnt capture cuz we needed to use both hand and legs to climb in those places!
I went to Jabal Al-Akhdar alot in the past few years because its nearby my family comes from ( my family 8arya ) so when we go visit my father aunt and cousins we take a visit to some nice places
i also suggets the other side of Jabal Al-Akhdhar... from Al-Awabi walayat, take teh road to Wadi Bani Kharoos then al-3alya'a. It is a very cold area and you will like the fruits and climbing.
Been there 10 years ago, roads were not black-top. it was a long off road driving. The roads might be better now.
