View Full Version : A bug flew in my ear

I'm not kidding either.

While cleaning my boat yesterday, a bug flew into my ear. I immediately brushed my ear with my hand, but it crawled into the ear canal. So I stuck my little finger into my ear in an attempt to dislodge it. No luck.

A moment later I felt the wings buzzing inside my ear and after I stuck my finger in, there was blood on my finger. I have tried filling my ear with water and used a baby's suction ball to both squirt water into my ear as well as to suck stuff out of my ear (which were quite clean to begin with). I can't say I got the bug out and it's beginning to really gross me out.

I may be going to the Emergency Room later if I can't get rid of this feeling.

Anyone have this happen to them and how did you get the bug out ?

this is really annoying.. I hate this feeling.. well I can't remember it ever happened to me.. but sometimes I get that feeling..
in Oman if anything is disturbing the ear, some hot coffee or olive oil is poured in the ear.. it gives a warm feeling.. why don't u try it ?!

Thanks.

Hmmm, I might try that. I was thinking of pouring in some rubbing alcohol but was concerned that it might poison me through my ear.

I told MoonChild to not be surprised if I scream out during the night and have baby bugs crawling out of my ears, eyes, and mouth. That ended up grossing me out more than it did her.

If I still feel pressure in my ear I'll go to the Emergency Care facility.

I think you should visit the ENT (ear/nose/throat) specialist... they use a special equipment which will suck it out using air! I think it will start becoming painful later.

if u have a foreign body In ur ears...(like an insect) dont play with it ...Go directly to the ENT ...(hospital)... attempts to do so (like what u did) might Just push the insect more inside...and u will hurt ur ear drums!!....
the ENT specialist is well equiped...he will remove the insect (if its dead)or its remanant or drawn it if its alive then remove it :D...then he will clean ur ears...with a special syringe...then he will give u some medicationms (paracitamol for most and maybee antibiotics to prevent secondary infection)...
Blood that u saw might be eigther....from :
the insect itself ;)
Ur ear...exteranl canal...or internal due to perforation!....

In conclusion.......GO TO THE HOSPITAL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

P.s. alcohol... MMmm never heard of that!!!...
coffea...Oil....this will just melt the wax in ur ears...!

MY general important advice to all!
NEVER PUT anything in ur ears including ur fingers!!! U will harm ur self!

There is an ancient episode of "The Twilight Zone" where an insect crawls into a manīs ear and from there into his brain. The experts couldnīt get it out and the punchline is the fact that the insect is not only female but also............................pregnant.http://smilies.networkessence.net/s/contrib/blackeye/Eyecrazy.gif

Shakoosh - loved that one. It didn't help that I immediately thought of that episode when I felt the wings fluttering in my ear.

I went by the ER last night, but it looked too crowded so I went back today at lunch time.

The nurse was very concerned about my blood pressure. I pointed out that her blood pressure would be high too if she had a bug in her ear. But I will have to investigate that further.

The woman doctor came in later and took a look. She said that the ear canal looked irritated, but there was no damage and no evidence of a bug. The pressure I'm feeling is apparently due to a fluid buildup behind the eardrum. I am to take Sudafed to drain it.

BTW - the advice you all gave was good, if you get a bug in your ear you should simply flood your ear with water or light oil - like mineral oil or olive oil, and tip your head to drain the bug out. If that doesn't work, go to a hospital ER. Don't do what I did and try sticking your finger or a "Q-Tip" in as it may only push the bug further in.

Thanks all.

Thanks, I'm fine.

I'm not sure how the bug got out - probably when I flushed my ear with water, but I can't say for certain 'cause I didn't ever see the bug - I just felt it buzzing inside my ear and had a fingertip covered with blood as evidence. By the time the doctor looked, there was no longer a bug in my ear.

At least now I know what to do should a bug get in any of my family's ears. Flood thge ear with olive oil or water and drain, but no fingers or Q-tips. Not sure about the vacuum thing, I'd be afraid of too much suction.
