Has anyone heard about this before? do you know how we could get vision impairment" ? and how much it could affect our eye sight?!

Many of us think that people who are blind can only see black. Yet surprisingly, over 90% can see the sun 93 million miles away.

People with a vision impairment see things in different ways. Some may see light but can't distinguish an object or a person's face. Others can see during the day but are blind at night. Some even have enough sight to read a book or computer screen but can't see the numbers displayed on a bus. http://www.guidedogs.com.au/vision/images/eye_imap.jpg[/url]

I was watching this program on T.V few days back where it was talking about vision impairment. Apparently, in Australia especially in Queensland, it has said that over eighty thousand Queenslanders who suffer some kind of vision impairment, with fifty percent of all vision loss being preventable. While older people are aware of the dangers, it’s the younger sun lovers that eye experts have in their sights.

what am wondering, do we have such a problem back home? Being in Australia, the sun is really close to the surfes, which tends to casue heaps of problems not to only the eyes, but even skin. So it came to my mind in oman do we have ppl that suffer from vision impairment ?

Over here in Australia they are Encouraging ppl to wear SHADES especially Australian Standard Sunglasses. Not only that but they are as well going to push to have sunglasses become part of school uniforms, with eye experts keen to prevent severe problems later in life.

would love to hear your opinion ppl about this matter, what do you think about it, and are they ppl out there suffering from this or not!

To me, i cna;t seem to go out with out shades on, i can;t even open my eyes if i am not wearing shades, my eyes are really sensative. And i truly believe that those ppl who are explored to the sun for a long time could have such problem just like Dr Andrew Apel is one of Queensland's leading eye surgeons and says problems like pterigiums, which is a form of sun induced eye disease, are becoming more common.

good topic neena,

regarding ur question on visual impairment in oman, visual impairment occure evrywhere, and it has many causes .

retina is the film of the eye, the most senstive part.. cells in retina can be damaged by strong light like UV. thus in shiny areas it is advisable to wear sun glasses..
about me, actually i don't like wearing sun glasses.. for a resaon i don't know.. but seem that i am going to buy one.;)

Yes i believe that it exists everywhere in the world, but howmuch of it does effect ppl in oman thats what i am really intrested to know. Because over here in Australia this is a very very huge thing, parents have started to actually make their kids to wear shades since they are young like the age of 7 8 and so on. because kids are easily to get affected by this as the years goes on.

Well, i think you should make an effort to wear shades fahad, you might not feel it now, but as you get older it may occur!

sorry neena, i am soo busy nowadays,,
regarding ur question, i just wnat to give brief information about the colour pigment in out body, the melanin, this basorbes light specially UV and therfor protect our body..
in the eye this pigment is found in the iris ( circular muscle which gives us the colour, like blue, green, black) and in teh retina ( sensitive part of teh eye)... if we compare omanie to austalian, omanies have alot of this pigment therefore visual impairment due to strong sun light does not make a big proplem compare to fair colour poeple.. therefor it is advisable for fair people to use sunglasses most of teh time , one of teh serious coplication of this proble is retinal deattachment, i remeber an eurapian lady who had this probelm in Oman.
