I have a question to raise and discuss, let us assume that a lady deliverd her baby today, is it possible to get pregnent lets us say for a period of 6 to 8 months after. I heard also if the lady continue to feed the baby from her breast she will not get pregnent even up to 2 years (which is the period mentioned in the holly quran that the mother can breast feed the baby).

breast feeding serv as a contraceptive mthod, but not 100% .. this bencause when teh child suck teh nipple teh prolactin hormone level( which stimulate milk production) increases and this prolactin has another function , which supression of GnRH release.. GnRH ( gonadotrophin releasing hormon) is released from the braina nd stimulate the release of other 2 hormons (FSH , LT) which then help in releasing a developed egg ( ovum)..

therfore, if PRL ( prolactin) prevent the release of egg ( contraceptive) by inhibiting the release of GnRH...

this si not 100% because prolactin only increases when teh child suck teh nipple and stay high in blood for few time...

Thanx Fahad for your sceintific explanation about this issue, so its all depends on the child and how often he sucks the nipple to protect his mother naturaly from unexpected pregnency. Isn't this one of the Allah miracles that provide a natural protection from 2nd pregnency without using any kind of medicen.

I am not really sure if i got you here... but i will still answer accordance to what i understood.

Normally is that if a woman stops having her monthly period, there is a very high possability that she is pregnent. But that does not mean if a woman that still gets her period can;t be pregnent.

Sure, its not highly to happen but very much possiblel My friends mother was pregnent while she had her period every month. Not till 4 months later she knew that she was pregnent, but of course she was immidiatly addmited as they were affraid that she must have been bleeding and she did not know!

icetea: not getting period after preganancy menas amenorrhea .. which might be due to pregancy .. there are other resaons but rare but doctor must consider them like sheehan's syndrome.. where women at delivery loses alot of blood and this lead to less blood supply to pituitary gland ( '3udda al-nu'7amya) which part of it will dye and this lead to hypopituitrism which is a cause of amneorrhea..

just wnat to inform u.. that if a women get pregnant she can't have period.. but if bleeding happened when women is preganat she must see the doctor cos this is a serious problem.. not because of period but bleeding problem.

Thats what I actually ment fahad... however there are times that you don;'t really think its bleeding u wouldn;t know its bleeding unless you see the doctor, just like my friends mom, she was shocked when she was told that she's pregenant!

...of course she can and not 6 months later, but just when she ovulates after her first real period. Usually a woman who has just delivered will bleed for about few weeks, then it will stop....maybe around 2 weeks later she will have a real period. If she does, this mean that she will ovulate 12 to 15 days later....ovulations means that she is ready for conception.

It is not true to say that she will not get pregnant...if she breastfeed, the possibility is there that she might not be able to get pregnant...not necessarily for the entire period she is breastfeeding.

It is a very wrong conception to believe that a woman is safe, as long as she breastfeed. So many believe in it and find themselves falling in the trap and pregnant right away again!!!

IceTea, as I know your wife just delivered recently, please do not rely on the method discussed here...it is not a safe contraception at all!

sorry regarding teh 2 years duration mentioned in holy quran.. this duration is menat for teh duration of bresatfeeding.. quraan advices us to continue breast feeding the child for 2 years, which is what doctors advice nowadays .. that does not mean women can not be pregnant within 2 yrs after delivery

Fahad that true the 2 years duration is the breasfeeding period, but its rare now adays to find a mother who complete a 2 years breastfeeding.

Another question about feeding the baby is it good idea to use poweder milk for feeding in addittion to breastfeeding ?

X-P don't worry I don't rely on this method I use my own ways :)
I was just clarifying things for educational reasons.

brother ice-tea.. actually it is rare for working women..
when i was doing my paediatric rotation last year, i found about more than 95% women whom i took medical history bresatfed their kids for 2 years.. and oman has won an international certificate in breastfeeding.. actually i forgot its name something like baby friedly association....

actually i was demanding teh admin to find for me , my old extensive topic about breastfeeding..hcih has been lost with the old topics in teh old sabla..
anyway regarding ur question, forget about pwoder milk.. they are cause of malnutrition in children ( old man posted an artical about this before).. plus there is no substitute for mother milk.. wish i have that topic with me to tell u everything about bresat milk

Fahad can you explain to me why powder milk causing malnutrition in children. I'm not saying the child will only be given powder milk ofcourse including breastfeeding. If we say that the baby will be given two times a day powder milk espacially if his/her mother not having enough milk.

yeap icetea.. actually i can'r remeber exactly in that artica;l which was givem by one of teh meber ( oldman).. but i can remeber some things.. is that powder milk is one of the most common cause of diarrhea in children.. because its high content of electrolyte( e.g Na, Cl) and this adsorb water making stool more watery thus causes diarrhea..
