How big is AIDS in Oman and could it be transformed to you through mosquito-bites just like malaria, which is caused when an infected person is mosquito-bitten, then the same mosquito sucks the blood of an un-infected person and passes the disease to him?

It will be useful to give us a brief summary of what AIDS is, and how can it be transmitted from one person to another.
what about using public toilets?!
This is an uncurable disease that we should be extra carefull from.
http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/images/redribb.gif
well regarding transmission by insect bite, it is not proven yet..
further information with explaination u can refer to this site which gives simple brief information: AIDS and some FAQ (http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/pubs/faq/faq32.htm)
regarding the statistics, well last time i heard about it was long time ago .. about 300 cases...
but i will check with minestry of health for accurate answer ..but we should wait for their reply and also for me cos i will busy till monday becos of my final exams..

1- Could you get AIDS:
a) If you use a public toilet an infected person used before you and it hasn't been cleaned?
b) Through dental tools.
c) By talking to an infected person who doesn't talk, but spits words out and his saliva lands on ur lips?
d)In some country, a group of people discovered they are infected with AIDS and so cut a wound in their hands and spilled the blood in ketchup bottles in restraunts. Will the people who eat the ketchup get infected?
2- Can you tell whether an individual got infected through sexual intrcourse of two unmarried people or some other way, in other words, can you tell whether an individual deserves it or not?
3- What is the percentage or aproxemate number of Omanies with the disease and do they live normal lives or are put in a some kind of hospital cell?

Drifiting Spirit,
I will try to answer your questions but I guess it would be much accurate when it comes form our Dr :)
Questions:
a) I dont think that public toilts could genraly pread aids, unless a very rare case when you have a cut and the aids person had a cut and his blood is still in the toilet plate.
b)Yes definatly through dental tools if there was blood from the aids patient and your blood.
c)no I dont think this is possible. Saliva does not transmitt aids unless it is polluted with blood drops that contact an open skin
d)tahts totally wrong I think. I guess it was just a rumoer to scare people. I dont think Ketchup bottles could spread aids since the virus dies outside the human body.
e) you cant tell, but a person would say if he engaged in an intercourse or not. I dont think there is a special type that transfer by intercourse and other by a normal blood transfer. No one deserve to be sick, it is a punishment but ALlah knows what is best for everyone.
f)this we will be waiting for the no. from Dr Fahad. :)

Ok ok samy.. u r ging to kill me :fire:…i agree with u that it haven been proved but as i told u what i have heard .. and from the beginning i wasn’t sure with the information i have gave u what ppl told me and not from my own imagination..
And i have asked my cousin who is a pharmacist and she said as they informed them from the hospitals about the reported cases, its approximately 2000 cases..
and for ur knowledge did u know that the cost of the medication for one person is OR 4000/ per month !!!!! i was shocked when i heard that… I know its A LOT :eyes:..
I heard rumors that Aids is a lot in Oman especially in Madinat Al Nahdha and Ma3bela.....i also heard a story from a guy who had a friend that died with Aids...the story was ...he used to be a good guy i mean clean never had sex with girls anyhow one day his friends asked him to go out and have fun before he graduate at the begining he refused but then he aggreed anyhow they went into a Night club and found some girls i can't remember how many were they anyhow they took the girls and slept with them...by time one of them got sick so he went to the hospital and they found that he was infected by HIV so they found out that all of them got HIV and they got infected by those girls ...the girls got caught and i think they are all dead by now....
This is to guys who like to go to nights clubs....Don't be fooled by beauty and smiles from girls in night clubs it's one way to heel be cearful and always remember and think of this question DOES IT WORTH IT??????

Well The problem people we keep on saying we heard this and that!!
I dont think that is leading us anywhere to the answer.
I thank miss naughty for the figures she got, and maybe if anyone knows what are the steps are taken to stop the spread of the diseas in Oman?
We all know the steps to stop this or avoid it Arabian Princess and that is NOT TO HAVE SEX WITH ANYBODY EXCEPT YOUR WIFE/HUSBAND AND ALWAYS KEEP CLEAN AND CAREFUL !!!
I don't think alot is being done to prevent the spread of AIDS at the moment .... and the reason is "morals" which is unfair in a way because hiding the issue is not solving the problem!
I think the public deserve to know .... and I think the media should play an important role in educating the public!
People with AIDS can live a normal life .... and can be anywhere around us .... as it is not contagious in that way .... ie through the air or handshaking! It is controlled by drugs which can control the spread of the disease however the drugs don't cure the disease... as it is a "virus" and to date no drug can eradicate a virus ... even cold viruses all drugs just suppress the virus rather than treat it .... therefore, to date there is NO CURE for AIDS .... it starts with HIV and ends with AIDS! However, in many European countries they have managed to prolong the lives of these people ie they live to reach at least 20-30 years after diagnosis .. however, in Oman they don't usually live more than 5-10 years after diagnosis.
There is huge number of people in Oman who have contracted the disease from "blood transfusions" rather than "sextual intercourse" and the type of people who get blood transfusions are people with sickle cell anaemia (alanaemia almanghalaya).... however this no longer happens as all blood products are checked for HIV prior to transfusion or during blood donations....
Many new born babies have the disease contracted from the father to the mother who didn't know about the father having the disease! if the mother new the disease could have been prevented from transmission to the baby by giving the mother medication which may prevent the transmission of the disease to the baby...
Anyway, I gave a brief information here and I would recommend that "very interested candidates" should visit websites which go through this topic more thoroughly...
Thankx Seham For the good information.......:)
I have one Q:
how many years does it take to find out that someone is infected by this disease? is it five, as I heard once?
sorry friend i was busy...i just finished my final exams and i am back....
drifting spirit regarding ur questions , AP did a great job there and i gave u a link above which got answer for most of ur questions...thank for sehaam tooo she did a very very great job....
regarding the statistic, i send a message to the director of health statistics and i got this reply : " sorry, i am not in oman i have my holiday and now i am in indonesia """:D :D :D ... about the statistics that miss naughty gave i think those are general for sexual transmitted diseases (STD) not only AIDS.....
one of doctor told me that the number of HIV patient in oman is 700 cases in 2001 , 200 are female and 5000 are male and most of teh cases due to drug addiction.. muscat has the highest number....but he told me that this is not the real figure but can be higher cos statistical deparment usually don't show the real figure... don't ask me why..
i have seen many cases of AIDS IN OMAN , but i got shocked when i heard a 13 yrs old boy having it... plus there was a sad story of a man with AIDS transmited his infection to his first wife and son, then married with another one and he transmitted the infection to her... then he get devorced and married with another and she and her daughter get infected...
what seham said about blood transfusion is totaly correct, before oman used to import blood from outside and those blood were infected so many patient got infected by that method... .. but in 1986 oman started to screen those blood products and they stopped importing importing blood around 1990 so many patients get infected by this method...
about ur question floret,,,
how many yrs after getting infected u will get AIDS>??
actually there is no defenite answer because this depend on many factors like the immune status of the patient, nutritional and general health status ... but on average it is 10 yrs...
hi fiends got an idea ...
why we don't talk in general about AIDS and try to be systematic so it will be easier to understand..., silent tune u requested that and now i want u to help to exapnd this topic.
i think this what we should talk about in order...
- what is HIV and what is AIDS ..
- is there one type of HIV ( RETROVIRUSES) and what is the old name for HIV ??
- what is soo special in HIV that makes it unique than other viruses we know like the one whcih causes common cold??
- what is teh strucure of HIV which helps us in knowing how we can get infected and how drugs can act on it..
- what are the stages of HIV infection?? this wil help us in knowing how a patient with HIV can present with.
-what are the complication of HIV.
- we can talk about the epidemiology of HIV and know about the areas in the wolrd where HIV is common..
- how can HIV transmitted ? ways of prevention.. this might be good drifting spirit and u will benefit alot..
- what re the treatment of AIDS?? and are they effective or not??
- is there any vaccine for HIV?? actually i miss a seminar about HIV vaccine by one of the doctor today because its timing was same as my exam time..
i will try to work hard,,, and i should expect help from u friend... hope u help in this...
from where does teh word AIDS come FROM
the September 24, 1982 morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) defined a case of AIDS as "a disease at least moderately predictive of a defect in cell-mediated immunity occurring in a person with no known cause for diminished resistance to that disease."
What is AIDS? What causes AIDS?
AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. ... it is a diesease while HIV (human immunodefeciecy virus) is the virus which causes it... thus a positive HIV test result does not mean that a person has AIDS. a diagnosis of AIDS is made by a physician using certain clinical criteria (e.g., AIDS indicator illnesses).
the HIV family
hive belongs to a family called retrovirus, which are unique to have RNA virus with an enzyme which vcan transform teh RNA to DNA in the host cell.... RNA and DNA are molecules whcih contains genetic codes...
HIV was known to be called HTLV-3 human T-lymphocyte virus but its name is changed to HIV in 1984......
see this old posture...

I 've heard that a scientist from Algeria but living in France found a cure 4 AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrom) is that right?
well i heard about this algerian his name is nabil chahti,, but i am not sure wether what he discovered is teh cure or not, beacuse what he wrote was in newspaper...
also, 3 years ago i heard also in one of the newspaper about an indian who discovered the 100% cure of AIDS... but those where just advertisment for theirselves...
about the cure there are some drugs discovered for aids and they are still under third degree trials...
i will join this thread with the topic bout AIDS...
im just wondering...what do they do to those people who've got aids? do they try to stop them in any way so that they dont infect others and spread the disease? i heard that they r locked up..in a hospital...but is that true??
welcome cherry to health and education...
well there aren't any system or rules to look after to patients who had aids and punish those who misuse their infection to infect others,,, this is under discussion now...
what i know from my little knowledge that these patients first kept in hospital not locked but they sleep with other patients cos aids does not transfer from one patient to another by close contact,, after that they will be discharged with some advices and protocols like don't have sex , share needles and sooo on..
and they tell the family according to the patient's will..
