"Even the best laid plans .... "
MoonChild was scheduled for a C-section on Tuesday August 6th. We never made it.
MoonChild went into labour Sunday evening, August 4th. After receiving repeated threats of emasculation, I decided it best to take her "advice" and drive us to the hospital.
Braedon Clark "Wanderer" was born by C-section at 2:10 am local time, Monday, August 5th, 2002. He weighed in at 8 lbs 6 ozs. It was noted by several doctors that he has big hands and feet :) He also has 10 fingers and 10 toes, prompting me to declare that he takes after my side of the family. Though blue now, his eye color may change.
I watched the whole thing - prep, surgery, delivery. and sewing MoonChild back up. As it turns out, a post-delivery uterus looks remarkably like an uncooked 3 lb. pork roast. There was only one minor confrontation between me and the medical team (primarily a nurse to my surprise) though I eventually got my way.
We stayed the better part of 3 days in a private hospital recovery suite at the hospital where MoonChild works - lest we end up sharing a room with some babbling trailer park denizen and her mullet-haired, beer logo T shirted, common-law husband. Richmond, Va,, has never recovered culturally from being burned to the ground during the "War of Northern Aggression".
We came home last Wed night. Out neighbors have provided us with several ready-to-heat-and-eat meals so that we only have to microwave our meals, though I've managed to prepare a steak or two.
MoonChild is on bed rest by order of our good Dr. Peng, though she refuses to stay in bed. The once abundant supply of Percocet may have a bit to do with her mobility. It is Dr. Peng's contention that too much oyster sauce is used by area Chinese restaurants. I will miss listening to him on this issue.
I can now change diapers and "swaddle" with the best of them, after asking the nurse on each shift to show me how :)
I give Braedon "guppie kisses" - all over his cheeks, nose and mouth, and am especially fond of rubbing noses with him like Eskimos are said to do.
I bought Faith a big pink "I'm a big sister" shirt and she has been very helpful. She's at the beach with her Grandma for the week, so that MoonChild and I can get situated.
There is still no clear indicator as to whether he will be an Apple OS X or a M$ Windows user. The Dr. said it could be months before we know for sure.
I am very happy.
