Hi all! I watched a couple of fascinating music performances the other day, some really extraordinary choreography etc. which made me wonder... If Islam dominated the world, a lot of beautiful arts wouldn't probably have ever seen the light of day because they wouldn't fit into Islamic moral customs, I mean such arts as ballet, artistic depiction of nude human body (as we can see it on the paintings of the Renaissance artists), many sorts of dancing and music.. don't you think one of the benefits of the Western civilization is that it has always promoted diversity in art? and Islam shouldn't conquer all just because of that?

I just wonder if some of the members would consider the following pic pornography or whatever (and the mods wud eventually ban me for it, lol) ... or art?

I think we can fairly say much of the Louvre would not be on display ... unless the government or powerful individuals can make BIG money.

Could you tell us more about this painting, Russo?

Who painted it and what is it trying to portray?

Russo, first one must have an appreciation for the arts before they will even let their minds venture into thoughts of.. "hmm.. if islam DID conquer, these would not have happened.. and the world would be a poorer place"..

It takes quite a broad mind to admit that somethings must be taken with a pinch of salt.

(and broad minds are evil)

Sure.

Do you like art? Do you appreciate it?

For some muslims, this means going against what they've been taught in religion class. Correct? The not drawing creations of god, not making statues etc etc..

So.. the whole feeling that this is forbidden stops them from understanding art, looking at it outside the box and really appreciating it.

It's still a long way away from actually admitting that.. 'Phew.. thank God Islam never dominated cos the world today would have been without all of this!'

You can already see Baa7ith trying to make the painting look like anything other than art. He/she simply does not understand or appreciate it. And we both know why.

How was that for clarity? :hyper:

^ I think you cannot generalize what "SOME" muslims think... I mean, nothing can beat the beauty of Al-Andalus in spain, and all the art, decor, music, poetry... you gotta at least give them the credit for taking the first guitar into Europe..

Don't forget Taj Mahal you ignorant little creature :)

Painting of naked people and statues are just a part of the so called Art...

We do have paintings in the Muslim world... I for one like abstract art...

Sure. It's a painting by Italian artist Titian, portraying a woman from Greek myths. Why?

I could have brought any other painting... it's just an example. There's no ideology behind it.

Ah, thanks. I was just curious. It was hyperlinked to a Russian website, so I was wondering if the artist was Russian.

That's what you personally like... if you encountered other forms, you'd probably like them but religion puts a taboo on them.

Why do you call it "so called" art? Just because it doesn't fit into religious standards?

Why not?!

When I read the title, I knew you will speak of nude paintings :p

I appreciate art myself. But, its not necessarily that I appreciate whatever you see it as art.

Its funny you came to that conclusion, where art is very wide to be limited to whatever you listed,

First I don't think it's fair to compare a religion with a territory. You can compare Islam with Christianity or the East with the West since territories and countries have different religions and they're not restricted to only one religion.

Second, nudity art you're saying ha? lol. Since you dragged Islam here let's take the comparison religiously. Christians ( Or the west if you prefer it to be ) draw their God in a human being figure nude with his sexual parts shown along with his mother. Astaghfir Allah. We muslims can't even think about it since we respect prophet Issa PBUH and revere him as an individual. We believe that Allah created us humans and unfortunately the Christians did the way around, they created God and gave him a face and above all they exposed him in a shameful way. In this case, I say thank God for Islam bless.

And some consider pornography as an art as well. So well, the without Islam world has another advantage eh?

Islam has its own unique art. That doesn't involve immoral pictures. That's not about sexual parts shown as an art and objects. It's the pure nature and you can see it in Spain over the 800 years muslims ruled in there. Take a trip to Al Andalus, Curdoba and most Spanish cities. Read about what muslims introduced there like a modern irrigation system instead the Roamn primitive one, the midicine field, agriculture et al. The all beyond the nude painting art you're happy to have them in the west.

However, if you are a big fan of such art then I can understand your point of view as exactly I understand of the gay people who are happy with some of the churches decision of approving gay marriage.

their is no direct quran quote that says Islam is against Art as I remember was it dancing or drawing. But since Quran moral is more into ethics codes that serves human needs to function in a healthy way. Naked picture drawings can be used with Islam or against it. How? for example, when teaching doctors about the human body you need these drawings and figures. When you show it to a teenager to teach them how the human body functions and what they really face in these years of unbalanced harmonies and how to have their pressured outlets is something positive. Yet what Islam is really against is using these drawing and pictures to trigger the increased heat of human that leads to violence and hate.

dancing on the other hand, as will can be used for getting off your shoulders the negative vips or it can add to it at the end its your own choice. Thats why they always say whatever you do is according to your intentions.

What makes you think I haven't seen other forms arts....

I fail to see how a naked person is art putting religious views aside...

I guess anything could be called art as look as you can critic it... which makes it endless...

I don't think Islam minds ballet, at least. And I don't imagine Islam dominating the world without Muslims understanding it well. So maybe I can say, don't worry.

I personally do not like abstract art very much but will take into consideration the detail from the artist who created it. If abstract design is included in the architecture of the building sure it's beautiful but I cannot compare it to say something Da Vinci did or Michaelangelo. Art doesn't always consist of nudity either. That's being narrow-minded. What do Muslims think of the Renaissance period when art and architecture "exploded'?

Its not like christianity was fond of nude art either.

Wasn't there a pope who ordered various statues to cover up with a leaf or something?
