FaHaD 23-07-02, 03:01 PM Cot death??? 4-ever-young vat does zaat meaan :gap: . sorry i could not recognize it 4-ever-young 23-07-02, 03:18 PM well i read somewhere that it is when a baby dies while sleeping in the cot samy 23-07-02, 03:25 PM Cot death is the common( lay ) term for the " sudden infant death syndrome" . it is defined as the sudden death of an infant under the age of one year that remains unexplained after a through case investigation including performance of a complete autopsy , examination of the death scene and review of the clinical history. the peaks od the incident is between the age of 2 -- 4 months of age, and most deaths occur in infants a few weeks to 6 months of age. most occurs between midnight and 8 AM. male to female ration 3:2 few risk factors were notified : . sleeping position ( prone sleep position) . bottle feeding . maternal smoking . infant overheating ( rapping with more cloths) infant who succumb to SIDS have had intermittent or chronic hypoxia before death. the mechanism of death is not well known few victims of SIDS sometimes reported seeing a physician a day or so before death. the only effective method of reducing the incidence of SIDS is Health Education given to parents which include promotion of the supine sleeping position , breast feeding , avoidance of overheating and smoking cessation ( even paternal) some tried to use apnoea alarms .. but it did not prove any sig. positive outcome so it is out of practice . we do not know YET the statistics of such entity in Oman , but i can assure u that YES we do have this unfourtionat entity as a cause of infant death in Oman , though it is really hard to put it as a etiology for sudden death .. FaHaD 23-07-02, 11:51 PM sorry 4-ever-young i did not get u.. but thanx for samy for clarification.. and well done samy... keep it up friend.. just wanna add with samy.. that causes or risk factors ( better) of SIDS can be classified into 3 factors: - intrinsic abnormalities in cardiorespiratory control - critical period of development of homeostatic control mechanisms( mechanisms that stablizes body system like tempreture, concentrations, PH... -exogenous stressors these three risk factors are called The Triple Risk Model proposed by Filiano and Kinney ... other suggested that problems in nerves and brain as a cause,, cos as samy mentioned most of the causes occur between 2-4 month,, and during this period there is rapid brain development... about exegenous tressor samy mentioned clearly some important one.. FaHaD 23-07-02, 11:59 PM just want to mention about the USA reccomendation for child sleeping which is established in 1992 . ... and this recommendation has shown great effect in decreasing teh number of SIDS.. SEE THIS GRAPH.. http://www.aap.org/policy/pe000650.jpg 4-ever-young 24-07-02, 12:05 AM Thanks Samy very much for the info..very useful indeed..and Fahad dont worry about it... ;) 4-ever-young 24-07-02, 12:08 AM what does SID stand for? samy 24-07-02, 12:31 AM SIDS stands for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome:) MoonChild 24-07-02, 01:28 AM I was awake half the night last night thinking about SIDS :( Not a happy topic for me right now :sorry: 4-ever-young 24-07-02, 01:30 AM Thanks Samy again... what position is the supine sleeping position ? :eyes: sorry Moonchild i didnt think of u when posting this.... :sorry: MoonChild 24-07-02, 03:37 AM Oh that's OK, i'm just having normal new-mother jitters!! supine = on your back. we can also buy a wedge-shape pillow to keep baby on back or on side which is supposed to help. the main thing is to keep the baby's face out of the bedding so he can breathe. FaHaD 25-07-02, 12:19 AM thanx for all of u.. don't think this measurment as a simple thing it can protect the child... in Canada , they eduacate mothers about this simple measurment and u know what was the result , the number of SIDS deaths has fallen steadily since the late 1980s—from 385 in 1989 to 138 in 1999. 4-ever-young 25-07-02, 12:26 AM that is very good news..i hope they do the same here 4-ever-young 25-07-02, 12:51 AM Risk factors for SIDS that parents can control include: Placing the baby down to sleep on the stomach (prone). The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that babies be placed down for sleep on their backs until age 1, unless a doctor recommends otherwise.2 The rate of SIDS deaths has greatly decreased in most countries that have encouraged parents to place babies who are less than 1 year old on their backs to sleep. Smoking. Babies of mothers who smoked while pregnant have a greater risk for SIDS. Babies in homes where anyone smokes around the baby have a greater risk as well. Allowing soft surfaces in the baby's bed or sleeping area. This includes quilts, soft mattresses, cushions, sleeping pads, beanbag chairs, sheepskins, pillows, or water beds. These materials trap air that the baby has just exhaled, especially if the baby has been lying face down. The problem sometimes is called rebreathing. Rebreathing is not a cause of SIDS but has been associated with it. Keeping the baby's sleeping area too warm. Babies may have greater difficulty regulating body temperature. A baby can easily become overheated from too much clothing, too many blankets or quilts, or a sleeping area that is too warm. Not getting prenatal care during pregnancy. Women who do not see a health professional regularly during pregnancy or who do so only late in their pregnancy have babies who are at greater risk for SIDS. Placing the baby in an unsafe cradle. Some rocking cradles allow a baby to become trapped against one side of the cradle, blocking the baby's breathing or causing the baby to breathe in the same air that was just exhaled (rebreathing). These cradles must be used with a locking pin that prevents the cradle from leaning to one side. |
