The most major rule that i follow in life that coincides with the core of islamic faith is that all your actions are based upon your intentions. If your intention is pure and leads you to a better life then you have succeeded. I see it more like a gut instinct where if i see something that doesn't coincide with my beliefs, then i will avoid it. Applying this in life will help in demolishing the fear people have that islam is too "old fashioned" or worrying about "fitting in the community".
Most of these are superficial reasons. But to do that, you have to be more focused that religion is between only you and God.

First of all, Islam will never be not fine, NO WAY. It is a religion for all people and for all times, OK!? It's not the Islam what would change, no, it's the people who follow it!
Second, there are still a lot of people who are real Muslims, even if their moves don't show it, but the intentions are the thing that matters.
For example, I pray, fast and do good just for the sake of Allah, yet I listen to music and do some sins, OK, but I still do my best to be forgiven. It's just the flow of days that would change us, but the good is still exist and Islam is just FINE.
Sure it is
The point is how do you implement its teaching in your life

You ask for forgiveness or also promise not to fall in error anymore ?
And I'm in your same situation anyway
Just curious

We can't assure that we won't do something wrong anymore. As long as that sin does not affect my religion or other people, so it's even more forgivable.

I think Islam is fine and perfect exactly the way it was from the beginning of time.

It's fine for the people that want to follow the social, political, economical system of Islam in a country that is willing to use that system to govern society.
To say ALL people for ALL time is begging for disaster in countrys not wanting Islam to govern in their society.

Disaster?
Care to elaborate how Islam is a disaster if followed correctly?

Here's just one example ...
Algeriās Superior Islamic Council (http://www.ansamed.info/en/news/ME03.XAM18271.html)
ALGERIA: PRISON FOR VIOLENT HUSBANDS IS AGAINST KORAN, MUFTI
(ANSAmed) - ALGIERS, MARCH 15 - The proposal to introduce prison terms for men who beat their wives goes against the Koran and the teachings of the prophet Mohamed, according to the head of Algeriās Superior Islamic Council. Qaher Sharif fiercely criticised the bill presented to the head of state Abdelaziz Bouteflikās by the head of the Consultative Council on Human Rights Farouk Qustantiti. "This man's aim is to violate a law of the Koran and of the Sunnah, and he meddles in subjects that are beyond his competence", Sharif said in an interview with the Arab-language edition of the daily newspaper El Khabar. "Hés done it before with the death penalty, and now with beatings," he added, asking "what difference can it make to him what goes on between a man and his wife?" The President of the Islamic Council said that he was stunned by Qustantinės proposal, because "God has already pointed out precisely the way that a husband must behave towards his wife". He quoted verses 34 and 35 of the Surah on women, in which men are advised to "admonish women, confine them to their bed and beat them" should they commit "nushooz", a term signifying both infidelity and a refusal of sexual intercourse. Sharif pointed out that the text is so precise that it indicates the method of punishment to be used against the wife, and that this should be neither "too insistent, nor provoke disfigurement". (ANSAmed).

Islam never changed. People change.
Islam never changed. People change.Well that's kinda the point ...
And this is anothe example (http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5inxYecjp4rz2Di91pAw_hTlMpTYw)
The issue has flared in Malaysia after reports that two girls aged 10 and 11 were wed in the conservative northern state of Kelantan last month. They have now been removed from their husbands.
Rights groups have called for the reform of Islamic laws that allow marriage under the age of 16 if religious officials give their consent. Sharia law runs in parallel with civil law in multi-ethnic Malaysia.
Jack, I think the argument against this would be is that even Islamic scholars can sometimes confuse the culture they have lived with with the message of the religion.
If you ask even conservative scholars in America or England, you will not be told that it's unIslamic to imprison men who hurt their wives.
Here's just one example ...

this article made me really laugh this is a very bad translation of the verses of the Quran to try to distort the image of Islam.
Allah swt said in that verse :" wahjuruhuna fi almadaje'a" which means don't have sexual intercourse with them surely not CONFINE them to their bed this is ridiculous.
Jack try to get reliable sources if you like to know what real Islam is.
