The muslim era began with the great event of the Hijrah or emigration from Makah to Madinah of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) and his companions. This event was adopted as the beginning of the Muslim Era in the Caliphate of 'Umar ibn al Khattab, the second Caliph after Muhammed.

The Muslims calendar is lunar, and its months are determined by the various positions of the moon. In every year there are 12 months, and each month is either 30 or 29 days depending on the position of the moon(i.e. the number of days in the month are not fixed).

My question is, can the islamic calendar nowadays still be used on regular bases, since sometimes you need a specific date to carry out your daily activities?!

Yes, of course silent tunes we still have to use our own calendar since most of our (ibadat) are based on moon sighting, especialy Fasting of Ramadhan, Haj and so many others.
Also women menses should count in lunar time.
But if saying that we r not using it in our daily activities u r right, but why we dont use it since we r the people who concerned of it.
As what is happening in Saudi Arabia.
This is my idea.:)

In Bangladesh we are using Bengali Calendar for official purpose but we put date from the English calendar side by side. For news Paper, Radio & T.V we use lunar calendar with others. Our religious activities are strictly followed by lunar calendar. Under the present world economical activities ,we can not run by denying the English calendar.
