View Full Version : Are Vitamins Pills a Waste?
X-press 11-07-02, 08:20 PM http://www.soyouwanna.com/site/syws/vitamins/img/VITAMINS_graphic.gif
I have been taken MultiVitamins for years and always thought that there effects were effective. Last week, I suddenly hear in the front news that
a new scientific study found that taking vitamins to protect against disease
is a waste of money....
"The study, which followed the progress for five years of more than 20,500 high risk individuals, showed that the claimed protective effects of antioxidant vitamins appeared completely unfounded.
The scientists said that people would be better off eating fresh fruit and vegetables".
What do you think of this? Where you someone who used to take vitamins as a supplement and are you planning to continue taking them now?
abu Suleiman 11-07-02, 10:33 PM As per I know that vitamins are given only when there is detection of any vitamins dificiency.
But they are contraindicated for long use, wheras fresh veg and fruits are highly recommended.
actually i was given an advice since i was in my elementary school..telling me that if u want to get vitamin take it from foood not from pills..
well thanx x-press for giving me this valuable study... ...
MoonChild 12-07-02, 08:33 PM I think it's always best to get nutrition from food. I take vitamins occassionally to supplement if my diet has been poor, or for a "boost" (ie taking vitamin C if I'm catching a cold). Also, much of our produce is deficient in trace minerals such as selenium as our soil becomes depleted, so a multivitamin that contains these trace minerals can be helpful.
A vitamin pill is no substitute for a good diet! "fruit in the morning and vegetables at night, eat like this and you'll always be right" (Wanderer made this up for Faith :)
DorellaM 12-07-02, 08:43 PM I have been reading this book called "Toxic Relief" by Don Colbert and it is truly amazing. I reccomend this book to everyone. What it says about vitamins is....that most vitamins just pass right through your system because they dont dissolve fast enough. Another thing it says is that for most vitamins you take, you have to also take something to absorb the vitamin. For example, if you take calcium of any sort, you must also take magnesium to absorb it....or its useless :lost:
Here's his web address
Dr. Colbert (http://www.drcolbert.com/)
thanx dorellam for the book..
friend i got an idea of posting information about all the vital vitamins..

so what do u think about it .. can we start it..
Shahrazad 12-07-02, 11:49 PM You brought up a very important issue here X-press, thanks.
I recall one of my friends saying that she used to take a great amount of vitamins when she was little, it had no effect at that time, however after some time she noticed that as she grows older she tends to become fatter and fatter. She is now quite over-weight.
She was told later that her obesity arose from the vitamins she used to take in her childhood and it is somehow difficult for her to lose weight now! :eyes:  .
Thug4Life 13-07-02, 12:07 AM Once I asked a doctor whats the difference between natural Vitamines that we get from Food and the ones sold as Pills! in terms of their value, and biochemical structure etc
he said: there are few diferences in regarding to the regiment or concintartion of the Vitamines.....u c..when u take one pill of that sold in pharmacies Vitamin C it gives u the same amount of Vitamin C that u get when u eat what is equal of 10 oranges!!!
but in regarding to the biochemical structure..he said No difference...
Side effects...well depands on the manufacturer if he made the pills in a bad way!...other than that...they r the same!
yet People like more natural stuff....(and am one of them ) ;)
Thug4Life 13-07-02, 12:10 AM and about tha story of syrup childhood vitamines its well known among us :) I think the reason for that is the increase of the childs appetite...due to the vitamines!

Blossom 11-03-04, 07:00 PM what are the adventages and disadventages of using them?
Vitamin and minerals supplements were designed to help those who are suffering from a shortage in them. I think that they should really be used as a last option, just a personal opinion, because the way I see it, if you can get them by just enhancing your diet, then why use them unless you need them badly and quickly!
The good think about them is that they help those with a deficiency to get the necessary quantity that they need to get over any problems that they might have suffered because of their shortage and can lead to better health.
The only disadvantage that I can think of is the problem of taking too much of them, since they can lead to toxicity, and you really don't want to get that far. But mostly these are extreme problems that you don't usually get, besides vitamins are just sold over the counter so they should be pretty much safe to use!
Maybe someone else can also add to what I've said here.:)
Bloom I've merged your thread with an old one that is talking about the same topic. There seems to be a lot of interesting opinions here.
Hope that you find them useful!:)
