Different blood groups refer to different antigens (chemicals) found attached to red blood cells. The basic "ABO" blood group system was developed around 1900 and explained why blood transfusions could cause (often fatal) reactions in the person receiving blood.

Today there have been hundreds of blood antigens discovered (largely driven by the organ transplant industry, which is concerned with organ rejection mediated by these antigens). The antigens are determined genetically.

People usually have antibodies against the antigens that we lack: for instance if you are type A blood, you lack the type B antigen but have the type B antibody. When type B antigen from transfused blood meets up with the type B antibody, your body would recognize that blood as a foreign invasion (disease) and attack it. This seems to be the case because the antigens are much like markers on intestinal bacteria, and probably evolved as an adaptation to various bacteria present in the environment.

The frequency of blood types varies considerably between ethnic populations (for instance, American and Australian aborigines have almost no B blood group, but Asian populations have high proportion of type B or AB blood). Originally this was thought to mean that A and B factors are more recent in evolution. However, the A, B, and O factors are very old, in fact are also found in apes, monkeys, and other mammals. So the actual reason for human variation between races or geographically isolated populations remains something of a mystery.

i wanted to post this long time but i was busy as u know final is coming :(
but i didnt want this topic to go down coz i found it interesting that we ppl r togather but we dont have the saem boold goup and it doesnt show that ur friend got different blood group than what u have..
i know that moonchild had explain but i would add mine to her.. and here we go..

In grouping blood there are many ways or methods and the most popular one is the A,B,O system…
There are four blood types: A, B, AB and O. these refer to the type the types of sugars (A, B and O) found on the surface of red blood cells. .. therefore if u have an O sugar only on ur RBC , u will be O group .. if u have only A sugar u will be A group, if have O and A u will be A… and so on..

But why do we have different blood group??, actually this is difficult to answer but this what I think,,

The body cells use things such as proteins and sugars on their surface for many purposes.: one of them is
to enable the immune system to tell "self" from "non-self" and distinguish "you" from every "foreign" body that may invade… so in a simple word: it tells the immune system not to attack self cells and attack non-self cells by those markers ( protein+sugar)..this is why if u receive blood from different group, it will harm u :6:

BUT remember that there is no difference in function between those blood groups.. there is now strong evidence to indicate that blood groups confer protection or susceptibility to a wide range of human diseases. Example, Groups A and AB are more susceptible to smallpox (thankfully eradicated), group A is associated with stomach cancer while group O has an increased likelihood of developing duodenal ulcers(an ulcer in the small intestine)

Plus I found that in Africa, doctors found that some blood groups are more susceptible to a particular infection than other… like Duffy antigen (another system in grouping blood) are more susceptible to malaria (P.vivax).
