I found this article in : www.Omanobserver.com
I thought it is intresting to bring it here and share this with other members. I will try to search for the website of Katu (the agency that rated the economic freedom) to bring more information on this issue. Until then, please comment on the article.

Date: Sunday 30 June 2002

An annual report issued by an American research centre granted the Sultanate first place among Arab countries in terms of economic freedom. Oman Arabic newspaper, sister daily of Observer, reported yesterday that Katu, a Washington-based non profit research institute, accorded the Sultanate7.4 points on its indicator of economic freedom

I tried to search in the net for the organization in order to give the criteria they were using to rate the country but did not find it.

Yah I beleive this is the begining. Oman is heading twords being developed in all means. We took chalange and built a string infrustructure, but the challange is bigger now to build a strong econmy too!

An annual report issued by an American research centre granted the Sultanate first place among Arab countries in terms of economic freedom.

sum all the arabic economic freedom and multiply it by 100 and still the amount of economic freedom practiced in the arabic world is neglected....... so being a leader or on top of a neglected list is not really a development or an acomplishment at all........are we supposed to feel humble and pround about this???!!!!! well may be:o

Sabal El'3af, at least being the leader of the neglected countries is an achivment :D

salam,
hey you guys you should be optimistic, at least one step ahead, and even if we were among the wrose at least we are the best among them, today you gain little tomorrow you gain more, but if you dont accept it from the beginning then you lose it all, just be grateful to what you get andfor sure ALLAH will grant you more..
well if any body can get the rating criteria may be that will make it clear to all of us..
all the best

I guess that is also something, isnt it Fishfood??

I tried looking for the agency online but couldnt, I found a news agency with the same name but I did not manage to search for the specific economic freedom criterias. I will try again later.

I do believe Arabian_Princess in relation to Oman being No. 1 ... however, sometimes newspapers like to manipulate or cut off some information to make what we read is right!
For example, this agency might have said: Oman improved the freedom of economy from 10% (in 2000) to 13% (in 2001) ie a 3% increase .... however other countries for example UAE improved the freedom from 32% (2000) to 32.5% (2001) ... therefore, that makes Oman much better than UAE because it gave a freedom of 3% in comparison to 0.5% by UAE. So in a way Oman can be no. 1 .... but in reality it was low anyway in comparison to UAE but the change made in one year might be higher than any other arab country!
So that is what I mean "by manipultating results" by cutting off some facts!!
Anyway, this is how I interprut what was written ... it might be right or wrong ....

Seham,
you have a very valid point here.
But, when I read the newspaper in arabic, it mentioned that it was classfied accordint to a ceratin point. These point were granted because the country preformed good in a certain field (which means it was given a percentage). so, it is not according to how it was improved but accordning to a rate it was given.
Still, you have a very intesting point. This is why I tried to look for the criteria, but sadly could not find the website of the organization that arranged this classification.

Brother Sabal El'3af,

I just wanted to bring to your attention that Arabic newspapers shouldn't be used for such purposes because they may contain the name of Allah (Sub7anahu wata3ala), you can use English newspapers as an alternative.

Thank you & sorry if I might seem nosy.
