Has anyone tried the pentium 4??
Is there a big difference between P3 and P4?
Or r they just selling the same thing under a different name.

Yes a very big difference. There is a difference in CPU architechture the P4 is some kind of new multi pipeline burst technology developed by intel themselves. This pipeline architecture means that for example (dont know the exact figure) ten executions of instruction sets at the same time. This means it will be very very very fast. BUT
at the moment the AMD Athlon is far better (33% overall i think) than the P3. AMD are also planning a new chip code named palomina, which i am sure will be much faster than the P4. The P4 and palomina are aimed for heavy duty business users and network adminstrators, if you bought a P4 you wouldn't really be making use for what its been built for.
The facts: AMD ATHLON (not k6-2) is far better than the P3.
The probabilities: The Palomina will be better than the P4 (in fact the Palomina bus speeds are already higher than the P4s' i beleive). The P4 is (not too sure) the replacement for the Xeon chip-if you don't know what that is than you reall really do not need a P4 or an AMD Palomina
More facts: the P4 will start at around 1GigaHerz speed and will cost a lot of money same with the AMD Palomina (slightly cheaper)
In Oman for some odd reason the AMD is more expensive than the intel chips, this is not right, anywhere else the AMD is cheaper. Typical of Oman to get it the opposite of everywhere else.
If you are buying a new PC go for the AMD athlon or the P3 chip even if the P4 or palomina are out. Its best to see how this new architecture will perform, also if you are a home user than 1GHz is all you need to run a whole company on. The P4 and AMD Palomina are not really for home users.

will the P4 work with all the current programes i use or would it be too fast for it? like games, etc???

it will take things like gaming to the next level. But at the moment the average home pc is a 266 Mhz P2. With the advancement of graphics acelerators, graphic based programs will not rely too much on CPUs. In fact i think graphics cards come with there own cpu these days !

U say that it is used in networks but they r selling them in normal home pcs here.

what r u using at the moment?

Ofcourse intel want to sell it to home users but it was developed for heavy duty usage. Like i said b4, you will not use the P4 to its fullest potential if you are an ordinary email, word processing type of guy/gal.

How about for graphics, games and programming?

what do you want to know about games graphics and programmin? My speciality is games, then graphics, then internet stuff and programming is last on my list but maybe i can still help you???

~Angel~
13-12-00, 02:52 PM
ok
ummm

DVD playback and video editing, is it good with that?

In programming the compiler must be super fast, which would make the games faster too, wouldn't it?

What speed/frequency is it?

Have u actually used it?

Nimr Mal Zibala
14-12-00, 05:44 AM
Yes the P4 will speed up everything that has been made to work upto that speed. Some programs work the same on a 486 and a 686, some programs are more memory dependent. The P4 will be fully kitted and optimised for use with graphics and multimedia and pretty much everything else. (apples are the best for graphics) P4 will start at 1.xxGHz i think. If you're really interested to know exactly what it does
http://www.intel.com
http://www.amd.com
It will give game makers teh power to make games faster/bigger/amazing but since they need to sell games and the average home pc is still a p2 266 there will be few people who will make games to run at 1Ghz. I have never used a 1ghz and the day i will be able to afford one will be the day i am very very stinking rich!

Interesting.......hmmmm...wish that i could be like that, but i guess i am also happy the way i am. I know abit about the pc, but just enough that i do not need to go into detials < not like some people i know who breath and eat through the pc..hint hint kamakazy>

Q: if i would like to know about more about the bot program in mIRC and be able to use it effectively how can i be able to obtain that type of info.?
I know someone who is a freak and this stuff and i would just like to know more....thankx

i wrote a reply to your question WAK but it seems to not have been posted? (I suspect foul play kam) If you need a Bot/Script/Add on u can goto http://www.mircx.com and it gives a brief summary what that bot/script does. If you want details i recommec u goto mirchelp channel in Dalnet and they will tell you about scripts (ask Fruit_Loop if she is there) and bots or redirect you to the right websites or mirc channels. Sorry i don't know more as i use mirc less than icq and messenger but im sure the guys in mirchelp will give u good info-if they are in a good mood !

Intel Introduces The Pentium® 4 Processor

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 20, 2000 - Intel Corporation today introduced the Intel® Pentium® 4 processor, its newest microprocessor for high-performance desktop computers.
The Pentium 4 processor delivers a new generation of performance for processing video and audio, exploiting modern Internet technologies, and displaying 3-D graphics. Its foundation is the new Intel® NetBurst™ micro-architecture, a collection of unique technologies that will power Intel's most advanced 32-bit processors for consumer and business users over the next several years of computing.
"The Pentium 4 processor is designed to give users performance where they can appreciate it most," said Paul Otellini, executive vice president and general manager, Intel Architecture Group. "Whether streaming content, playing interactive games, encoding video and MP3 files, or creating Internet content -- the Pentium 4 processor is designed to meet the needs of today's most demanding computer users."
Major computer makers and software suppliers around the world have spent months readying products based upon the Pentium 4 processor. All major desktop PC makers have Pentium 4 processor-based PCs or workstations under development. Many manufacturers are expected to start taking orders today and will begin delivery of PCs based on the Pentium 4 processor.

Intel ships the Pentium 4

New chip selling at a bargain price

TWO NEW PENTIUM 4 chips at 1.4GHz and 1.5GHz will ship, costing $644 and $819, respectively. Its predecessor, Intel's 1GHz Pentium III, originally cost $990. The Pentium 4 also promises a significant clock-speed advantage over Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s current Athlon - but that doesn't necessarily mean the Pentium 4 is faster.
Pentium 4's higher clock speeds stem from its new architecture, dubbed NetBurst. NetBurst utilizes features designed to improve performance, including a longer pipeline, new methods of advanced data caching, and the ability of some parts of the chip to run at twice the clock rate. But some analysts say that while lengthening the pipeline - which lines up instructions to be processed - may help increase clock speed, it can actually decrease overall performance.
Clock speeds and chip pricing aren't everything, however. Beyond performance, the new chip's effect on PC prices and its availability will be important factors for the high-end PC buyers most likely to pony up for the new chip.

HOW FAST IS IT, REALLY?
Performance benchmarks put the Pentium 4 well ahead of Intel's 1GHz Pentium III in multimedia performance. Intel's own benchmarks show the 1.5GHz achieved 25 percent performance when encoding a .wav file to an MP3 file in eJay's MP3 Plus benchmark. The chip reached 44 percent on the Quake III Arena Gaming benchmark, and Intel claimed it was up to 47 percent faster when encoding views.
When it comes to everyday office-style applications, however, Pentium 4 is less than 10 percent faster than the 1GHz Pentium III. This is sure to renew the debate about whether Pentium 4, despite its higher clock speed, performs as well as the Pentium III or AMD's Athlon.
"In the SPEC (integer performance) numbers, I think Pentium 4 beats Athlon, and it has a slight edge on the media (benchmarks)," said Kevin Krewell, senior analyst with Micro Design Resources. "In terms of general productivity applications, I think AMD is going to win."
Even Intel's 1.13GHz Pentium III, which ships next year, might beat the Pentium 4 on standard benchmarks, Krewell said.
Intel said it's happy with its results, since the current Pentium 4 provides a line of new chips based on a new architecture, said Jeff McCrea, director of Intel's Desktop Products Group.
Intel "What you're going to see is here's your new baseline of performance," McCrea told reporters at a Comdex/Fall '00 Pentium 4 briefing.
Later, in a one-on-one with ZDNet News, he said benchmarks show Pentium 4 performing only 4 percent to 8 percent better than Pentium III on most ordinary desktop applications.
McCrea argued that the Pentium 4's clock speed will increase significantly over time, putting more distance between the new chip and Pentium III.
Intel has said it expects Pentium 4 to reach 2GHz in the third quarter of 2001. Or, as McCrea put it, the new chip is "still getting better."

CAN I GET ONE?
Availability will be an issue for potential Intel customers, who would like to know whether Intel is launching Pentium 4 on paper or for real Monday. In sharp contrast to the launch of its 1GHz Pentium III, Intel officials said it would make significant volumes of Pentium 4s available at launch.
"We're in high-volume manufacturing today with Pentium 4," McCrea said. The difference between the Pentium III 1GHz launch and the Pentium 4 launch is that we're "talking about a bin split vs. a new product," he said.
In other words, Intel can produce sufficient volumes of Pentium 4 at the right clock speeds, which it could not when the 1GHz Pentium III was launched.
"Pentium 4 availability (right now) is based on how many wafers you start. That determines how many parts come out the other end," McCrea said.
The real test, however, may be the reseller channel, which only recently received supplies of 1GHz Pentium III chips. Intel said Pentium 4 kits - including processors and Rambus direct RAM (RDRAM) memory - will be readily available from resellers as well as PC makers.
"All of our resellers worldwide will have the processor on day one," Paul Otellini, executive vice president and general manager of Intel's Architecture Group, said at the Comdex briefing.

PRICING AND MEMORY
Initially, most PCs using Pentium 4 will be priced above $2,200. The highest-priced Pentium 4 PCs, which will sport the richest configurations - including large hard drives, lots of RDRAM, and high-end graphics cards - will cost significantly more.
Despite the higher cost of RDRAM memory technology, Otellini said, "we're very happy with where (prices) are starting, and they'll only come down."
Because Pentium 4 will be paired only with Intel's RDRAM-based 850 chip initially, Pentium 4 PCs are restricted to using the controversial memory. RDRAM costs about $100 more per 128MB module than synchronous dynamic RAM (SDRAM).
Nevertheless, Dell Computer Corp. will be able to offer an aggressive price on its Dimension 8100 desktop, at $1,999, with a configuration that includes a 1.4GHz Pentium 4, 128MB of RDRAM, a 40GB hard drive, and a 19-inch monitor.
IBM's NetVista A60i PC will offer a 1.4GHz Pentium 4, starting at $2,199, without a monitor.

you will leave pentium alone for now and get AMD Athlon thunderbirds! They FSB is faster and they still take standard SDRAM (cheap too). For 150 Rials or less you can get a motherboard and 1Ghz chip !
