My friend was talking about how she doesn't understand why people consider Mariah Carey a legend..etc so it made me wonder...how come it's even doubted that she is a legend?

I'm not her biggest fan, but I like her music and I love her voice. I've always felt that she is not respected or treated as a legend even though she did break many records and she's been there for a very long time!

*I can't believe I'm quoting Wikipedia* "Carey was named the best-selling female pop artist of the millennium at the 2000 World Music Awards.[6] She has the most number-one singles for a solo artist in the United States (eighteen; second artist overall behind The Beatles)"

And she got to Guinness book of world records by hitting the highest note! Why I feel that people don't treat her as a legend?

I like her voice, not a big fan though.
Truth must be said though, only circumstances make you a legend!

It's an interesting question really, but I think that the reason she's not really considered a 'legend' is because most of her success is thanks to her sales and charting power in the U.S alone, but worldwide she is not as successful as other female singers such as Madonna who has 12 #1 singles in the U.S and 13 #1 singles in the U.K, not to mention her worldwide appeal compared to Mariah who has a stunning and record breaking 18 #1 singles in the U.S but only 2 #1's in the U.K. You get my drift?

She is undoubtedly very talented and has proven to have staying power and I enjoy alot of her music particularly her music from the early to mid 90's but she still has alot to prove when it comes to worldwide success, touring and overall appeal and recognition, plus her 12 year old attitude certainly does not help.

Speaking of which, Madonna would be considered a legend in that aspect. Not a fan of her either, but she is, nevertheless.

Yea I think this makes sense. But I also noticed how American people themselves don't consider her as a big deal...even singers...I don't see them respecting her as one of the most successful artists :os which is something I find weird..

She sure does have a personality that isn't appealing *I think she's very fake* but this doesn't mean she's not talented...people with even worst personalities than her get more attention, poor thing, lol.

I'll go watch the reader :hyper:

i think she's a great singer with a wide range, but i wouldn't consider her an artist. madonna hasn't got her range, but she has interpretation and she's a trend setter...others follow her, which makes her an artist and probably a legend too. i like mariah's earlier work....don't have much admiration for her later work with the hip hop stuff thrown in.
