View Full Version : English Speaking In Oman CoOOoL 06-12-00, 07:19 PM Dear friends , How we can improve our English speaking in Oman with FREE of coast ?? Nimr Mal Zibala 06-12-00, 09:01 PM The only way to improve your english at a low cost or for free is to go to the library, read the works of charles dickens, with a dictionary and a thesaurus, write down the words you dont know 20 times, memorise it. If you do this intensively for six months you will speak the queens english-like moi hehe. If you want to write better than you need to learn grammer from grade 1 to grade 9 (no joke) CoOOoL 06-12-00, 09:11 PM mr. fishfood21, do u think only the books can make some one learn speaking .. don't joke .... I am asking place where omanis can speak frequently and learn every day new words and vocabulary .. thnanks for your participation . Wardat_il'7leej 07-12-00, 01:24 AM I think that there are web-site that send you messages if you subscribe to them. They will send you e-mails directly every day with new words and vocabulary. I know there is one for French and Spanish. I could check it out for you. As I had said in my post subject that the problem is more than just being able to increase you vocabulary, it is more having the right bases from school. I know first hand that the system in Oman allows the student to ignore spelling mistakes and grammar. The teachers do not focus on these issues and all the student does is simply learn the material like parrots. Shouldn't the system in which English is taught and used be changed, since we commonly use the language in all area and fields? Bye, Wardat_il'7leej Nimr Mal Zibala 07-12-00, 02:04 AM I am very serious and grammer is spelt grammar by the way hehe ooops! Nimr Mal Zibala 07-12-00, 02:06 AM and yes books are the only way to learn perfect english. and yes english needs to be taught from kg1 nzwani 07-12-00, 03:35 AM What shall we do to improve our Arabic? We are speaking a very very broken version of Arabic; I would argue that most English Sablah Contributors will find it easier to speak or write English than to speak a classical Arabic. Honestly, after spending years in England, I found my self smoothly flown when writing an English report. Yesterday, I submitted a report of two thousands word which I really wrote in less than five hours including typing and checking, I am sure most of you are able to do so. How many of us can write a decent Arabic report of two thousands word and have it ready in five hours?! My English friends use words like, (Basically, Generally speaking, In fact, amazing, quality, highly rated, informal…). Despite what others say about the slang English accent, people still manage to communicate using strong words. They are proud of their language. Aren't they ? How about us, we are trying to teach our children English before Arabic. Shakespeare novels before Quran, Walla, it's a sad story; Arabic should be treated better. We started to hear "My sweat heart speaks better English than your son" huh……good for you! David Becham, (England best footballer) in his last TV appearance said that he considers writing his wife name (Victoria) in his arm in Arabic because Arabic is a classy language (according to him). This guy doesn't know how brilliant is our language and can't speak a single word in Arabic. Sorry to drive the thread to another direction nzwani Mambo_No_5 07-12-00, 01:34 PM Hi coOOol, Its a very simple solution. All you have to do is to find yourself an English native speaker friend. This way is the most effective and fastest way to improve your Speaking, accesnt and vocabilary. try it and it will surely workout.. All the best Sarab 07-12-00, 02:38 PM Read books, watch the BBC news and watch alot movies and find an English speaking person to practise what you have learned with. SoMe1 07-12-00, 02:57 PM Hi all first i would like to say that im 100% with what Kamakazy said earlier.. its short and had covered the whole subject.. you have to keep on practicing.. i can speak english much better then writting it ( as you can c ) lol.. anyways if you can speak english then to learn writting could only be done by reading.. i have many english and american friends and i kinda read bookbut mostly i read computer mag.. so that means that i do learn words but i dont frequently use them!! come to think about it i should start reading general books more often :) i really think that most of the people joining the subla have a quite stronge vocab.. i didnt expect such a thing.. + i suppose im learning more words from the people in subla then in my normal life.. i really like kamakazy's way of replaying not about this subject but in general he seems really matured to me all though hes only 20 i suppose.. keep it up kam.. Oh one more thing i get to hear new words from work 2.. and it helps alot. Kamakazy 07-12-00, 03:59 PM *blush* *blush* thanks for the compliment! now my face is green, ummm i mean red ;) CoOOoL 07-12-00, 04:58 PM thanks to all of you from your participation , the best solution I found it to read more in English and hopefully wardah give me the website so I can learn new words day after day , and As mambo said I have to seek for an English native person who can be my new friend and teach me English as well ... so the question now is starting is this suggestion is fine , and if it's fine from where I can get the right person which have English native in Oman . alhajes21 07-12-00, 07:32 PM The chance of learning English in a perfect way is on your hands and it is totally dependant on you. So, Don't wait b4 it is too late and try to catch up by what all those guys have recommanded you. Well, you might think.....what is the purpose of saying "b4 it is too late" The thing is, as you move toward being older and older ,,the ability of learning goes down and down. It is based on an old saying and true theory. I wish you the best of luck.......No body could be perfect in speaking english ,unless it is your 1st language. I've got another thing to tell you: as long as you can express your own feeling toward something that's all you need. alhajes of all times.:D SoMe1 08-12-00, 12:19 PM Helwa minak kam your face turns greens ( i got your point!!) anyways i was just saying the truth.. i really do like the way you comment.. what dose kamakazi means by the way?? Nimr Mal Zibala 09-12-00, 03:53 AM I'm telling you a secret man-LISTEN! Books are the only way. The average GCSE grade in english language in the UK is D. YES D - most of the english people here are thick as pig droppings and couldn't speak english properly if their lives depended on it. Reading by yourself with a dictionary and thesaurus, get one family bookshop and write down word you don't know 20 times than memorise it. Did you know that most non-UK students have a far greater knowledge of grammar than UK students? Trust me, a UK citizen ain't gonna help ya bub. And with the 40 % illiteracy rate in the USA an american definitely is not going to be of any use. An english teacher would be an extra bonus too. warda 09-12-00, 12:47 PM You're right fishy! Reading loads of books and looking up words in the dictionary as you go along does improve your written and spoken English. I went to an English school when I was a little girl and I was always top in English class. Nimr Mal Zibala 11-12-00, 01:37 AM I have one word to say : IQRA CoOOoL 11-12-00, 01:38 AM fishy and wardah :- I don't know why both of you don't read well the topic , I was asking for English speaking not English reading or grammar ... I think this sablah need a lot of focus in reading the topics . warda 11-12-00, 04:01 AM Well cool, I think that if you read English and learn your vocabulary then practise with those who speak it well and let them correct you whenever you pronounce wrong you should be OK. warda 11-12-00, 04:03 AM By the way cool, it seems that you're right that people need to read topics more, because I just noticed that even you don't!!!! Haha Nimr Mal Zibala 11-12-00, 04:19 AM Some people just don't listen, i'm giving you a hot tip, i didnt learn english from anyone I read books lots of them you doofus sunshiner 13-12-00, 10:07 PM The best way to improve your English, I think, is to live with English speaking people, that way u will have no choice but to speake the language and u will get to learn new words. Good Luck! Nimr Mal Zibala 14-12-00, 04:03 AM If you read a lot than you will know how to speak a lot - still don't get it do ya? CoOOoL 15-12-00, 03:44 AM well ... let me tell you some thing all of you , it might be my business but I am feeling this sahlah is my refreshment , mmm some times I think my English is good and some times is bad , but What I really want it to speak so I have to read a lot as my friends said and to know the new spelling ... after this all I will start to speak in confidence , thanks every one which helped me out to know the best way to speak English kamakazy2 16-12-00, 05:47 AM I am a %100 with what kamakazy said and I will add if you are not studying in Oman mix up with the Brits(thats if you are in England) mix up with the Americans who finaly were able to chosse there own President(thats if you are living in the US) If you are in Oman Practice Practice and Practice and you will end up doing just fine(Trust me mate). :) ~Angel~ 16-12-00, 05:57 AM i agree with fishfood on this one.... u gotta read to be able to speak a language.... u see..... i hear spoken arabic with my family but i find it difficult to speak it coz i dont/cant read it! so the key is not by the spoken word but by the written word! the only thing u get from hearing a language is the accent! Kamakazy 17-04-01, 10:04 AM practise makes perfect! Dimensional Creep 18-04-01, 01:49 PM I always believed that in order to learn english best, you have to read a lot... well some people say movies are good as well, I agree but you will never get to learn the english that will help you doing your work or serious stuff.... best way is to read and never use a dictionary. If you come a cross a word that you don't know just make sure you know how to pronounce it and then just move on....your understanding to the sentence will never be effected at all, i garantee that..... I also garantee you that the word you came a cross will appear later on in another reading with a probablity of 0.85 for the first time ( i actually calculated the probability mathamticly, if you wana know how I can mention how later on)..... For the second time, this probability will increase to .879 ( that has been calculated as well)... by the third time you should be able to understand the word and all other words like it cause this word been seen by you three times and been in at least three sentences that carry different composition..... I been recomending that to alot of people and they tell me it works.... I am not an educational expert or anything but I always believe in the theory saying " once in never out" and once the word get in your mind it stays there ,may be far a way in a lonely brain cell or something , and you only need to see it again to bring it to a neighbour cell closer and the reaction goes like this tell the learing process developes by itself and you will start understanding by only scanning the text..... doing this not only make you a good speaker, but it makes you a good writer as well..... and it's been said wa '7airo 7'aleeees" fee elzaman ketaboooo" [Edited by Dimensional Creep on 04-18-2001 at 01:53 PM] |
