I'm wondering how hasanah works and if it is Quran-based or a later addition?

Well hasnah mean blesings in a form or another ..
In Islam we beleive that all your steps are written and i u did a good deed you will get a hasanah and if you did a sin you will get a thanb.
Because of ALlah's mercy, some actions you do will clear some sins you do and other actions would add to your hasnat.
examples are going to Umra (visiting mecca). when you come out of there after you have prayed to god and if ALlah acepted your prayers all your sins will be cleared and you come back like you were just born.

Well the system of Hasna is a Quranic based system. BUt, sometimes people come up with things that are not truly giving you Hasna but they claim so .. they birng hadith (prophet sayings) that claim so and so and it might not be true but it might be true. The best thing is to judge by if the action was good or bad and you would know if it is Islamic based or not.

I am not an islamic scholar so I might be wrong, so if any member have any criticizm on my post please do correct me

MoonChild, as Arby said "Hasana" is the Arabic word for reward..

Moonchild, where exactly did you see the word?? It is mentioned both in the Quran and in the sayings of teh prophet..

It states in teh Quran..

"On that Day will men proceed in companies sorted out, to be shown the deeds that they (had done). Then shall anyone who has done an atom's weight of good, see it! And anyone who has done an atom's weight of evil, shall see it."[Quran 99:5-8]

We can keep on talking about the concept of Hasana..there's a lot to say about it, so please feel free to ask your questions..

An important concept is that no one shall be held responsible for other people's deeds. You will be rewarded for the good deeds that you commit, and by the same token you shall be held responsible for the sins you have commited..

I've seen it in a few threads... the idea of judgment, balancing (ie scales of justice) bad deeds with good, etc. is a common theme through all civilizations, and it aroused my curiosity about what form it takes in Islam (both the original Quranic writings and the cultural expressions of it).

Sometimes the Muslim writers in various threads sound like Allah is a Cosmic Accountant of "points", other times it sounds more like the Buddhist concept of karma.

Wicca has the threefold Law, wherein whatever you do, good or evil, will come back to you "three times". Good doesn't cancel out bad, but your actions determine your future experience.

Catholics are assigned "penance" at the discretion of their priests, where a certain number of prayers or good deeds can atone for sin.

Protestants don't like this bean-counting, they just want to repent and be forgiven, without any effort on their part.

In my religion, one is judged by his collection of leg bones. But giving away a leg bone is 10 times as powerful as keeping it. So I must spend my days locating leg bones and then finding worthy people to donate them to.

MoonChild, to summarize the very basic concept I will quote a verse from the Quran, which starts by mentioning scenes of the day of judgment, and continues as follows..

"Then as for him whose measure of good deeds is heavy, he shall live a pleasant life. And as for him whose measure of good deeds is light, his abode shall be the abyss" [Quran 101:6-9]

I will come back to you with further explanations later..
