If you are a standard pc user (email, games etc) then i spose windows (any) will do 95-98(SE) or milenium
If you are a network adminstrator or run a database server or any other kind of server then i recommend unix, windows advanced server, linux , NT or an apple ! Linux is free and very stable, unix is for heavy duty stuff like running Omantel i think they use SUN Operating system which is a type of unix. I'm not too sure about windows as its still quite an unstable system, also ,as some people like to call them, microshaft is a comapany you dont want to put money into. I recommend linux as i never hear bad things about it but thats probably cuz its free :)
If you really want a stable system and you're not a programmer and you just want easy access to the net and trouble free the best is to go for an apple.
The PC is struggling to be more like the apple but at the time IBM was THE company in the 70's(and still is) and when Bill Gates (owner of microshaft) came up with DOS (disk operating system) that sealed microsofts fate and made them millions. DOS was an easy to use OS for the IBM. Apples are actually better because ,i think if i remember correctly, they don't use a complex instruction set but a reduced instruction set. This means that becasue its uses a Reduced instruction sets it takes less time to make the calculations. So if you're not a programmer and like simple user friendly computer go for apple. If you like to fiddle around then go for a PC
