View Full Version : Taking husbands name
Hey Ya'll,
I was actually helping out a friend on an essay and well it was about marriage and well the western culture and religion allows the women to take the husband sir name so instead of being Jessica James she will be Jessica Jackson or something like that and he told me that in Isalm the women cant take the husbands name, is that true?
I always thought she can ;/
nop she can't !
she'll still have her dad's name !
it's all a part of keeping el nasab o el fa9al (ancestry or whatever they call it !)
hope some much wiser members will help u in this :D

Its not a matter of "cant take". In Islam, women have the right to keep her maiden, because she has the right to retain her identity. I havent come across an islamic saying that prohibits the wife to take the husband's name. But i have come across Sayings that STATES the wife's RIGHT to keep her maiden name, and thus retain her identity
Whereas in the west, during the period of Slavery, the slaves used to take up his/her master's last name, since the slave is considered as the property of the master.
In light of the above, one may ask, does the tradition of a wife taking up the husband's name imply "shes the property of her husband"? i cant comment further since i have no knowledge on that.

there is no point of the wife taking the husband's name, especially in oman cuz with all these tribes, u cant just change your tribe, it screws everything up
My wife must have my sir name
Doesn't really matter to me, my sir name, her sir name, whatever.

i could have kept my own maiden name, but i chose to take up my husband's cos it's nicer. :D
So kids take up the father's name because they are HIS property? lol
Even though we can choose to take up the husband's name (and we can choose not to), it doesn't erase your maiden name. It becomes Jessica Jackson nee' James.
She can also opt to have both. So it would become Jessica Jackson James. A double barreled surname.
Here, it's not just about identity, it's about families and family units.
If she is Jessica James .. is she part of the 'Jackson family'?
Why doesn't the husband take his wife's name ? James Jessica Alba :p
Where is the women/men equality?

i AGREE !
everyone should keep their last name , you can't just change your history by choosing another tribe name !
different cultures different ways of living
