The classic manual of Islamic sacred law, 'Reliance of the Traveller', states:

"Someone raised among Muslims who denies the obligatoriness of the prayer, zakat, fasting Ramadan, the pilgrimage, or the unlawfulness of wine and adultery, or denies something else upon which there is scholarly consensus (ijmn', def:b7) and which is necessarily known as being of the religion (N: necessarily known meaning things that any Muslim would know about if asked) thereby becomes an unbeliever (kafir) and is executed for his unbelief..." f1.3, p. 109.

It also adds a few other examples of Apostasy:

o8.0 Apostasy from Islam (Ridda).....
o8.1 When a person who has reached puberty and is sane voluntarily apostatizes from Islam, he deserves to be killed.
o8.2 In such a case, it is obligatory for the caliph (A: or his representative) to ask him to repent and return to Islam. If he does, it is accepted from him, but if he refuses, he is immediately killed.
o8.4 There is no indemnity for killing an apostate (o: i.e. or an expiation, since it is killing someone who deserves to die).

Acts that entail leaving Islam

o8.7 (2) to intend to commit unbelief, even if in the future. And the like intention is hesitating whether to do so or not: one thereby immediately commits unbelief.
(7) to deny any verse of the Koran or anything which by scholarly consensus (def: b7) belongs to it, or to add a verse that does not belong to it;
(20) or to deny that Allah intended the Prophet's message to be the religion followed by the entire world (dis: w4.3-4)(al-Hadiyya al-'Ala'iyya (y4), 423-24).)

Is it fair to say that the freedom to pursue answers is not shared by all human beings - indeed some Muslim governments deny this basic human right to their citizenry. Some Muslims are not allowed to think and to question the teachings of Muhammad.

What I think is tragic is that it is not governments who have the power to save or to condemn a single person when the Last Day of Judgment comes. It is the individual person who must stand before Allah who is the Supreme Judge of the Last Day.
