Whose Tafseer (translation) do you usually rely on?

I usually read the following:

Ibn Katheer

Sayyid Qutb

Sh'3rawi - I like his way of presenting explanation, using modern terminology.

Sh Ahmed Khalili (Even though I havent seen full Tafseer)

Please share.

Tafseer is different from translation, right Markov?

The good thing about Al Khalili 'tafseer' is that he presents also most if not all other opinions and school of thoughts while explaning a Quran verse.

Yes, but what is the correct word for that.

Did Al-Khalil do the who Quran, I thought he only did part of it

I am an amateur at this but I have found this website very helpful:

http://www.altafsir.com/

I remember it was very useful to me when I was trying to evaluate the discussion of wife beating and Islamic teaching on it during one Sabla discussion.

I have a quibble with the name of the post though.

In English, we would call tafsir, "commentary", not "translation". "Translations" of the Quran mean renderings of the Quran into other languages for reading purposes.

I know Muslims say the Quran can't be translated, but there are books by Muslims that attempt a word for word rendering into English.

If you have a text that says, "This means this, this is how the grammar works in this passage, this is the meaning according to this hadith..." that's called "commentary".

OK, maybe I meant commentary then, but I said translation. Each time part of the Quran is revealed, there would be a reason, either an event has occurred, such as guidance is needed for Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to make a decision, or a history about prev events is being told, or a law is being passed, such as inheritance laws or so forth.

The commentaries would explain and clarify each verse to its fullest meaning.

Jeff, if you are interested in getting yourself a good copy of English commentary translated from Arabic, I suggested you get a copy of 'In The Shade of Quran', by Sayyid Qutb
