View Full Version : Birthmarks
Okay I know they must be called "birth" marks for a reason, but I was wondering can a birthmark surface later in life?
My sister just had this little mark appear above her knee which looks very much like a birthmark, and when she went to get it checked, her dermatologist told her to just ignore it as it wasn't anything serious since she does not suffer any pain or discomfort from it. But she didn't explain what it might be or why it appeared at this age suddenly.
It looks pretty though :p Her husband insists it's a birthmark. Any ideas?

Birthmarks are from birth. The only reason they appear is when they are exposed to sunlight. The melanin appears.
---
Melanin: A skin pigment (substance that gives the skin its color). Dark-skinned people have more melanin than light- skinned people. Melanin also acts as a sunscreen and protects the skin from ultraviolet light.
Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes. It provides some protection again skin damage from the sun, and the melanocytes increase their production of melanin in response to sun exposure. Freckles, which occur in people of all races, are small, concentrated areas of increased melanin production.

I've had this birthmark on my thigh for as long as I can remember. It's small and cute lol but it's darker than my skin tone
Birthmarks are present at birth or soon after, known as congenital birthmarks
Any other skin pigmentation that appears later in life is not a congenital birthmark, but a rather acquired one

Birthmarks are different than beauty marks right??
Birthmarks are nothing to worry about. I have one on my shoulder... and one on my *cough*BEHIND*cough* LOL
I actually didn't notice it for years till I was informed recently. It's kind of embarrassing :p
I think you should worry if you have any "MOLES" though cause those can become cancerous apparently. You can get "Melanoma" with those I believe.
