There's always that debate I hear on which is the "healthier" one. So which is it, margerine or butter??

The difference between margarine and butter? Both have the same amount of calories. Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods. Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!

Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.

Margarine...

Very high in Trans Fatty Acids. Triple risk of Coronary Heart Disease. Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol). Lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)

Increases the risk of cancers by up to five fold. Lowers quality of breast milk Decreases immune response Decreases insulin response.

The Part that is very interesting! Margarine is but one molecule away from being plastic!!

You can try this yourself: Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things: No flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something).

-Heart doctors recommend butter over normal margarine, but recommend trans fat free margarines over butter.

^Did you copy/paste that or is that in your own words?

Thanks anyways. I don't like butter or margerine but I was just wondering.

margarine is like... yuck! i prefer butter, tho it contains more hydrogenated fatty acids, and therefore, is more likely to contribute to atherosclerosis...

Margerine is gross.

While butter is great.

That about sums it up!

Eating gross stuff all your life so you can stay healthy will KILL YOU DEAD. Just make sure to include something from the three major food groups--salt, fat, and sugar--in your diet every day and all will be well.

Margarine is the devil's work.

I don't use much of either - more olive oil. But if I'm baking or something, or spreading it on bread, it's always butter. Margarine doesn't get into my house. I prefer natural things, not processed synthetic substitutes.

There are always different opinions and pieces of advice about everything you can eat. But the way I see it is if you just eat a mixture of everything natural, you're probably somewhere near the mark for a healthy diet.

I've really cut out most processed foods. There is a supermarket right next to my house, but I probably only spend about 20% of my food expenditure there, if that - things like milk, some kinds of bread, and other things I can't get anywhere else. But the rest of my food comes about 40% each from the greengrocer (fruit & veg shop) and from the fish shop.

Ok, you are very innocent, I was talking about something totally different

If you are referring to eating, then both butter & margarine are not healthy, both lead to high cholesterol & increae the bad LDL, eventually leading to atherosclerosis

However, some manufacturers have the healthier margarine
