Question: How much water should I drink on average a day?

Answer: At least eight glasses of water a day for all adults. Athletes, people who live or work in hot environments need to drink even more to keep up with the loss through prespiration..

Drinking fluids helps to maintain your body, which is primarily made of water. By weight, men are about 60% water and women are about 55% water

The three rules of thumb when it comes to water
Drink twice as much as it takes to quench your thirst
Drink frequently throughout the day to prevent dehydration
Drink at least eight glasses daily, or one cup for every 20 pounds of body weight
You can count fruit juices and bottled water in your tally :) However, beverages such as coffee or alcohol have a mild diuretic effect wich promotes water loss

Mild dehydration can decrease one's energy level and mental functioning and increase stress on the body

You are right Bimmi and I find it particularly difficult to reach the 8 glasses. This amount is a minimum and we should in fact try to drink more of it. We should keep in mind first that this is a daily intake and not a "once in a while" habit. Secondly, that it should be taken in its pure form only, meaning that water mixed with something else like syrop, tea, coffe etc... is not part of it. ;)

For those of you who are not used to drinking water, I would suggest that you drink a glass of water before/after you pray..by associating it w/ prayers you would easily remember to drink five glasses a day :)

sister bimzoori, how much u should drink depends on many factors, weight, fat content, age,
and the most important one is the local wether hot area people should drink more ..

i just want to add a point about what is so called non-sensible water loss , which is loss of water by sweating and breathing which of course will be more in hot weather..

in summer, u should have a bottle of water in ur hand and drink water after each 30 minutes, coz by this u will prevent shrinking ur brain so no headache and also u will prevent kidney stones( renal colics)....
i know friend of mine who used to drink less fluid and he developed kidney stones and now he is nor suffering from it coz u will see him from far away with a ineral water bottle in his hand ...

Do we really have to drink a specific amout of water or are fruits/soup/juice...etc included??

Eating watermellon or cumcumber would give you a great deal of water I guess...?

3 liters per day is the normal fluid intake for an average person, so what u r taking now is normal intake , and ur blood glucose might be well controlled..

we usually lose water :
2L/day in urine, 400-500ml/day in feces and 200-300 ml/day insensible( breath and sweat), thus to replace them the person should at least drink 3 L/day..

4-ever-young
once u drink extra ur body will lose them through urine..
and do u know this our big major problem that we face in the hospital, we always buy mineral water and drink it when ever we feel thirsty and after few hours we rush to the toilet...

No Silent tunes, juices or fruits are not part of the 8 glasses minimum of pure water you need to drink daily. They just provide other nutrients in form of liquid, but it is not the same.

Bimmi, I think your suggestion of drinking a glass of water before each prayer is a good idea :) A nutritionist told me to force myself to drink:
2 glasses at breakfast / 3 glasses at lunch / 3 glasses at dinner = 8 glasses total, and as much water as I want in between.
