I do believe now that some herbal or natural treatments works better than medications, and this to cure mild problems like flue, indigestions, wounds ect...

Years ago, after taking for a week some flue syrop without success, someone gave me one a cup of black tea with one spoon of honey, some boild ginger and...black pepper . At first I refused to drink it, then I tried and I couldn't believe how relief I felt within few minutes. Because of the ginger, my sinus were decongested and the honey gave me energy that no flue syrop could do. Putting lemon instead of ginger is also a wanderful remedy and I never go without it when I am sick! :)

Does any of you used any herbal treatments at home? If you do, please share it with us.

Believe it or not, but recently my cat got a wound on his neck and developped an abscess. My housemaid adviced me to apply only some tumeric powder on it

...I couldn't believe my eyes, when the next day the abscess had nearly completely disappeared!!! We continued to apply tumeric powder and within 3 days the wound was healed :)

It seems it a a great natural antibiotic!

I prefer herbal treatment..infact I usaully start off with herbal remedies..and I go for medicines as the last resort..

I once opened a thread with many recipes, but unfortunately I cant retrieve it :(

Lemme see what I have for now,

1-Honey, lemon juice and olive oil ---> good for colds
2-Thyme tea (za3tar) ---> good for upset stomach
3-chopped onion soaked in honey (I know sounds gross)---> good for sour throughts
4-Ginger tea---> also good for sour throughts
5-Fresh tumeric and honey---> excelent for tonsils, and caughing

herbal medicine is such a BIG branch and an expanding filed derived from the alternitive medicines (I am very intrested in this!)
U see the secrets of nature are many and within it in concerning to medicine is the cure of Thousands of diseases and sickness
from time to time we read on the news or se on Tv a discovery of Aids treatment or Cancer treatment by some local herbal medicine in specific and alternitive medicine in general!
some old people have the knowldge of curing diseases that even modern medicine cant Cure Till now ( i know in Oman many Old people have this rich Great knowledge)
I argue that More studies should be conducted on that!
and I believe that the combination of modern medicine with alternitive ones Would be the Best Thing ever can happen ...

I know leaves of a specific tree that can cure as said from 40 sickness and dieases!!!!!!!! hehehe it grows in front of our house..hehehe well actually all over oman!!!

such an intresting field!!!! Local medicine is a cool field!

btw, do u no that having very very very little salt at the tip of ur tongue cures 70 diseases?! I heard it's a prophetical saying..
another thing, is what we call in Oman wasm..in fact I do believe in it..it has proved to be very useful..I think in Engilsh it's called either branding or singe..I'm not sure..

Thanks Bimmi for the info. I never tried to mix olive oil with honey. What are exactly the amount of each? I always find that people in Oman are always suffering of flue or caugh. Does anyone know a particular good treatment for it or to prevent it?

Thugy, which tree in Oman can cure 40 sickness and dieases as you said? I would love to try the leaves. What are the preparations?

X-Press, the mixture I told you about is very effective..infact, some people give it to their kids every night and it prevents them from getting colds....and I actually heard about it from more than one person.. I would say add equal amounts of each..
Another thing that I would suggest is honey and fresh grated ginger ( this might be strong for children, though)

Thanks again Bimmi, as my kids are sick with flue nearly on a two weeks basis, as I believe a lots of kids here! I give them some cold syrop but without success! I would love to switch more to her natural treatment as I don't want them to be on medication all the time. Starting tomorrow, I will try what you said and will let you know after few weeks if there is any positive results :)

I think garlic and olive oil, heated (but not very hot only warm) and then put few drops in the ears if it is blocked. My mom always use it with us when we suffer from ear pains.

I love jucies, and since I am abroad I dont have much of them I suffer from colds more than I used to when I was at home !!!

I think one of the seeds (7aba souda) (black seed, dont know how to translate it) it very useful for many diseases.

Princess,

I remember having warm olive oil put in my ear when I was a kid.....it certainly helps.

I think the seeds you mean are black cummin.

The other things mentioned are all good - turmeric is a natural antiseptic; honey, ginger, lemon and garlic are all great when you have a cold.

Here's a weird one for you: if you have a small cut, wash it out, apply a little black honey, and cover with a piece of a spider's web. It will heal more quickly.

But the best kind of traditioanl medicine is preventative: eat lots of fresh fruit, vegetables (both of these uncooked where possible) and pulses (lentils, beans etc). Avoid articifial products and sugar (don't give your kids Tang or Coke or any of that rubbish!), and go easy on meat and dairy products (although a little is good). That's the best way to avoid colds etc - by having a good diet.

I would have never thought of putting some olive oil in the ear! So it is nice to know its positive side and I will keep it in mind :)

Bimmi, it is true that orange juice is excellent for the health and can also boast you with energy thanks to its hight amount of vitamin C.

Mimo, the seeds Arby is talking about is known to cure everything except death and was taken since the time of Prophet Mohammed (PUH). We can find it easily here but I am not sure of the original name of the seeds. My mother-in-law told me that it is herbal soda seeds, but it has to be varified.

When I was pregnant and had a bad flue, under her advice, I used to take a spoon of honey mixed with a pinch of ground black seeds and it works wanders! Within 2 to 3 days I was cured. I hear it is good to take it on a daily basis as it built our immune system.

Here is more about it : Black Seeds (http://www.altavista.com/r?ck_sm=f00d4dfd&ref=200e6&r=http%3A%2F%2Fbarakaoil.com%2Fprod04.htm&rpos=1)

many herbal medicine are good but we should be careful in saying that it can cure a disease, because everything should be with evidence..
even in drugs, i will give u a real life example,..
people with heart attack were given an anti-arrythmetic drug( LIGNOCAIN) to prevent abnormal heart beat( as a complication of MI), and u know it has been practiced alot in emmergency clinics and just recently by evidence it showed that it has no real effect...

this is why we need studies to be carried out on these herbs

These are few destimonials from the same site mentioned above. I quote:

"Two years ago my brother began telling us about the wonderful Neem tree.

I suffered very badly with a skin ailment for almost three years. I was hospitalized with the condition and treated with all kinds of corticosteroids both orally and topically. Initially the condition was affecting my upper body, legs and hands. In time after spending a fortune on medicines the condition cleared from my legs and upper body but remained on my hands. I was shedding skin all the time and my nails changed shape. I could not touch anything, the skin was so hard and sore my sense of touch was diminised.
Eventually in January 2001 I began using Neem.

Within a week there was notable changes and within three weeks my hands were healed. Today my hands are completely healed and my nails have improved greatly. Just to say that I was tested for nail fungal infection and was told that was not the problem. I had dermatitis.

***********************************************
Earlier this year I had an abscess. It was very painful. I attended my Doctor who gave me prescription for an antibiotic. I never collected the prescription as when I got home I used some neem on the area and by the next day the abscess had disintegrated. After about three days one would never know I had an abscess. The skin was clear and there was no Pain...

***********************************************
I also blended Neem oil with a base cream for an 83 year old man who had a growth on his ear which was sore and unsightly. His Doctors showed no interest in this growth despite the fact that it was concerning the man. After three weeks of using the cream I prepared for him the growth disappeared and his ear was as perfect as the day he was born. This elderly gentleman visited me a few weeks later to learn more about wonderful neem and he has asked me to prepare more blends for him.

***********************************************
My son had an accident and he required sutures in his head and both his knees. He was in a lot of pain. I prepared blends for him using Neem oil to reduce the soreness and help the scars heal. The hospital said the sutures in his head would be removed after a week and he ones in his knees after two weeks. When he returned after a week they removed all the sutures as the healing was so good. He continued to use the blends I made for him and today only six weeks later his wounds are completely healed. He is very impressed with the results.

With these positive results I am eager to bring the benefits of neem to others.

If any members know other benefit from the neem leaves, please share it with us and give us if possible some preparations tips :)

Mimo, I am very happy that you bring the Fenugreek seed in this thread as it is very often used here among the Omanis.

In fact, it is a tradition here to give the nursing mothers fenugreek in order to produce more milk when breastfeeding. I was personally given that after my delivery and in my case it didn't work at all!...no more milk whatsoever ;)

Here is also given mixed with milk or porridge to the new mothers, has it is believed to clean the digestive system including all the blood left in the uterus after delivery. Does it really work? Most omani women here believe so.

One thing certain is that it causes nursing mothers a noticeable body odor. Though it is harmless, from experience I can tell you that it is really unpleasant and no soap can remove it :( .

Fenugreek is can also create upset stomach and colic. If I am not wrong, it is another belief here and in Far East that the fenugreed seeds, if taken daily in big quantities, can highly make a pregnant woman abort! :( So I hope Mimo, that the Egyptian do not drink too much of it....

It will be nice to know the english name of this tree "Al-Yass" (is it also the neem?) or post a picture here of its leaves.

I know a lot of women (omani as well as expatriates) are suffering from heavy hair lost. They are very concerned about it and are not sure if it is due to the water which is slightly salty in Oman.

Many have tried different medications to help their problems but it didn't work. If indeed the leaves from the tree Dr.Fahad is talking about make hair stronger, it could be possibly a solution to this problem.

x-press, i will try to find its name in english.. for that i have to go to the main library...

Acacia or arabic gum or sometime called Babul
this widely grown in parts of asia, africa and australia..
its branches produces kind of gum which is used for many things:
- for loose tooth which is widely practiced by teh ancient egyptian, it support the tooth and strengthen the surrounding tissue, but iy won't be helpful if the tooth damage is severe.

- for open wound and as an anti-septic balm : coz it promotes rapid healing and can be used for burns..

- for mouth ulcer and sore throat
this is basically cos of the tannin molecules which is found in them,
and i think u know about tannins that they might cause stomach irritation and can cause irone(Fe) defeciency ...

Going back to the Neem tree, I was intrigued to learn here that its leaves had an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.

As my son has been suffering for the past two months from a mild fungal infection on a particular location of his scalpt the neem properties cought my attention.

His condition is due to a bacteria which was transferred apparently from our cat to him. He end up having a 3cm circle rash which involved complete hair loss in that area. The dermatologists told me that it will take at least 3 months to go and to my experience so far, the medications and creams prescribed where not helpful at all. He still experienced itchiness and his hair was not at all growing in that particular location.

Now it has been about 4 days to 5 days that I am applying daily some grounded neem leaves on his fungus (can't believe I am doing that :( ) and the results so far have been just amazing!!! He felt relief right away, his infection is healing very fast and unbelievable but true, his hair starts to grow while it didn't before for 2 months!! :)

I was not into this herbal treatment before but now it is a fact that it can work...at least when it comes to the neem

x-press, one day i went to the public library specially to find the engish name for the al-yass tree..
unfortunatly, i found arabic books which does not give the english name of the plants, with exception of some in which i did not find the yass tree.. even in adictionary.

now lets talk about a a fruit which i don't like:
peach
i just mention about some of its benefits
- it is used as anti-anxiety ( tranquilizer).
- the peach oil has some sedative effect and relieve nervous tension but if u take it in large amount it can cause stress.
- the exctact from the stem of its tree used as an expectorant , and in the past it is used to treat whooping cough.
- the exctract also irritates the baldder so it can be used as a diruretics( increase the urine volume)

it is not eating the peach u will reduce ur anxiety...
there is a kind of preparation where it is mixed with some other herbs ,, sorry i don't know it exaclty..
but what i know that it contains some chemicals which antagonises ( act against) some neurotransmitters( chmicals in nerves which act to transmit information from one nerve fibre(cell) to another) most probably against acetycholine..

about peach oil, i have no idea wether it is available in markets or not coz i don't go to oils sides, but it may be available..

peach is grown in oman in high mountains ( the green mountain= jabal al-khdhar), and oil may be extracted there..

but u can try it x-press, when u have anxiety try to eat peach and find how many peices relive ur anxiety, i won't try it coz i don't like peach and pls don't ask me why cos my mother always asks me that

I have posted several weeks back that my son suddenly suffered from a fungal infection which caused him to lose a patch of hair on his scalp. The fungus was diagnosed as "ring worm"

Now ring worms can affect the scalp, the body, the feet (athlete's foot), and the nails. Ringworm has nothing to do with worms, the name is derived from the characteristic red ring that appears on an infected person's skin. Ringworm is difficult to prevent. The fungus is very common, and it is contagious even before symptoms appear.

Why do I post this here? because for nearly 3 months I went from one doctor to another, including skin specialists and they all told me that it will take a long time until this fungus disappears completely. My son was on antibiotics and skin creams for months and there was absolutely no improvement whatsoever, to my worry. The path was growing bigger and the itchiness was severe.

As last resort, I visited last week an internist and I was absolutely stuned with what he told me to do:"This fungus just need to in a dry area to di;e as if he is in a moist one (given by the applications of the creams), it will grow even more. Just buy some normal INK and rub it on the area where the fungus is."...which I did with real confusion.

Unbelievable!!, but already on the next day his infectionn had drastically improved!!! I have been applying once a day some normal ink for the past 5 days and he is nearly cured (alhamdullilah).

However, I was told .. that drinking miramiya tea could help a woman get pregnant plus it helps to clean the womb and make the ovaries healther. I also hear that if your period isnt regular .. Miramiya tea is the best way to regulate it.
I dont know how true is that anyway ..
How to make it:
place the miramiya in a flusk, and pour hot water into it (do not boil it because some essential oils might evaporate ) and drink it all along the day.
