Sleep is a basic human need, as important for good health as diet and exercise. When we sleep, our bodies rest but our brains are active. Sleep lays the groundwork for a productive day ahead. Research has shown that a lack of enough restful sleep results in daytime sleepiness, increased accidents, problems concentrating, poor performance on the job and in school, and possibly, increased sickness and weight gain.

A majority of American adults (63%) do not get the recommended eight hours of sleep needed for good health, safety, and optimum performance. In fact, nearly one-third (31%) report sleeping less than seven hours each week night, though many adults say they try to sleep more on weekends.
(from the National Sleep Foundation's 2002 Sleep in America poll).

That being said, I would like to add that I have not been getting enough sleep nowadays. (Nowadays being almost the past year.)
A really good long sleep to me is a 6 hour sleep, but on the regular I sleep for 3-4 hours per day.
I think my body got used to it, because I don't find myself feeling very tired when I get up in the morning, but the bags and dark circles under my eyes are a different story. Worst thing about it? No concealer I've used has succeeded in covering them.
I even find myself lazy to workout anymore, where I haven't been performing any form of excersise for quite a while now.
I decided to open this thread after I made an important decision with myself last night - Get More Sleep.
I decided I'm sleeping atleast 7 hours a day from now on. I'll try to be in bed by 12, if I was to wake up at 7 30 the next morning.

What about you? How many hours of sleep do you get on an average day? Do you nap in the afternoon? Do you feel lack of sleep affects your body in any way? If so, How?

I barely sleep well here.
Even if I go to bed at 9 pm I will fall asleep MAYBE at 12 am if I am lucky enough...
I sleep for like.. 2 - 3 hours and keep waking up a lot..
My body feels so heavy and slow.

My friend said once: "You look out of it!"
He meant I was so tired and dead.. looked like a zombie! :p

Without sleep you can't concentrate much and we students need to sleep at least 7 - 8 hours.
That is what I think since we have to work really hard during the day.

I never sleep in the afternoon EXCEPT if I was REALLY REALLY tired and can't do anything without going to sleep.

True, three things everybody should watch for, for good health.
Sleeping at least 7 hours a day
Having 3 meals a day
walking at least 1 hour a day

I always go to bed when I am tired but I sleep for 7-8 hours a day.

Im suffering from the same problem as you Ayna, only thing is i feel tired throughout the day and it bugs. I come home from work and straight hit the bed for the afternoon siesta.

Before i used to be quite fit, but this schedule of sleeping late, waking early has left my body in limbo, im gaining weight, and nothing helps. I guess im gonna have to push myself to sleep early and sleep enough!

I think I do get enough sleep . But the days I don't, it affects me. My attitude kind of changes because of how tired I am and I can't focus much either.

People who have read my blog also knows what happens when I haven't had enough sleep. I start not making sense when I talk to people :XD:

As for naps, I don't take them because they WILL affect my sleep at night.

I don't sleep much either. I am never in bed by 12 - a confession of a night owl. I usually read or watch sitcoms till about 3 am. Having said that, it means that if I were to wake up at 8 or 9, I would be extremely tired. So I can only manage to get myself out of bed at 10:30 and even then, I am tired. I love to sleep! I sleep better after dawn than during the night, so this means that I am more inclined to sleep till afternoon hours if I have not slept well all night long :inno:

Now that I am trying to wake up early in order to study at the library during the morning hours, I am finding it extremely hard. I was supposed to be in the library by 8 am for the past week, but I could not do it, for even a day - considering the fact that I have a friend calling me at 7 am screaming "Yalla, wake up! wake up!"! After all that, I am usually at the library by 11 or a little later- bad Lym :bored:

I don't take naps (Unless I am sick or absolutely dead tired).

6-8 hours is the required amount of sleep. Teenangers however, need slightly more sleep because they are growing and their brains need it.

Ayna, I hope you don't mind me adding...

The reason I think it's 6-8 hours is because there are 4 stages of sleep. Each stage is about 90 minutes. (which adds up to 6 hours). sometimes we need more sleep, it depends.

Sleep is very important. Your brain needs to re-produce brain cells and replace the old dead ones.

Lack of sleep is the same as a person who is drunk. Your functions slow down, your logical thinking slows down, your memory slows down, your mood changes, your eating habbits change, etc...

Sleep is not only important for physical reasons but also psychological reasons. During sleep we dream. This is important and i think helps us survive. We dream for a few reasons:

1. To work out our issues . Sometimes we had a breakup, or a fight with someone during the day or we go through a tough time, during this time when you sleep, you dream of finding the solutions and try to work it out. You might have a conversation with the person you are angry at and you can say whatever you want to that person without any real harm. It just makes YOU feel better.

2. Wishful dreams. We sometimes have those dreams of fulfilling a wish. It makes us feel better. Like for example, you may wish to buy a fancy car, you might dream that you buy it.

There are other reasons , but just think how important sleep is for us. It's much more than just closing your eyes for hours. It's good for the health of the body and mind.
Imagine what we'd do without sleep:os

Ayna,
Thanks for sharing the stats n the info! Really interesting!

I really believe sleeping does play a very big role in your mental and emotional aspects. Plus, it's not like your excommunicated (excuse me for using this word again) from this world! When you sleep, you dream!! And those dreams.. some of them look like you're entering into a different galaxy!!

All in all, sleepin' is the shizz!!
Thanks for sharing :D

I don't have a specific routine for sleeping. Sometimes I sleep 4-6 hours, other times I asleep about 12 hours. This goes to naps too. I usually sleep when am tired.
