As I was browsing through the messages posted earlier, I came across one for Omanlover complaining about Zanzibarees and how they're being called so and not Omanis. My dear friend, If I'm to start talking in this subject I can write a book but let's be brief and VERY honest.
We have to deffrintiate 2 types of Zanzibarees, those who live in the villages, like Sharqiah for instence and those who live in Muscat. People in Sharqia , like most other Omanis tend to dress, speak, look and behave like real Omanis who never left to Africa.
Those on the other hand who live in Muscat and excuse me for being so direct are nothing but Zanzibarees. I'm not saying this in a negative way at all for no one in these days who hasn't mixed blood ( i have myself). These people first of all are not 100% Omanis. When their ancesstors travelled they intermarried with African ladies. This is a fact that no one can deny and perhaps that's why their decendents have mixed middle Eastern and African features and sometimes total African features depending on how much African blood is there. I have no objection about this and no one can oppose intermarriage between different races for it can have it's advantages. My point directly again is that the Zanzibarees in Muscat don't behave like Omanis. First, they have a community by themselves. In this community favour and bious in jobs exist strongle. But this happens with other communities like Balooshees or lawatias. Second, They don't speak Arabic which is a real shame. At home, they talk to their kids in either Swahili or English. They put their kids in private schools to strengthen their English ignoring Arabic. The result with no Arabic at school or at home, they end up with funny broken Arabic. You ask a zanzibaree woman who came from 16 years ago and she answers in a weak Arabic that she didn't learn the language because everywhere she speaks English even with Omanis and I had this situation where an Omani ( Zanzibaree ) call, her whatever kept answering me in English even though I replaied in Arabic. There's a difference between someone who doesn't know a language and someone who doesn't care about knowing it. Maybe to do with patriotism and which of the 2 counries they feel they really belong to. I'm not saying this about all Zanzibarees in Muscat. There're exceptions but not many.
Now, back to private scools and too much exposure to western idiologies. The result is in different behavior which is again not the case with all Zanzibarees but with the most. Teenage girls and their boyfriends in a bar at some hotel, girls dressed in the most indecent way in malls and finally women in PDO dancing with their husbands' English or Dutch bosses in parties. Are these Omani behaviours or African with an enfluence of western colony? Will a woman from Nizwa or Sur do that. They're many people from these regions in PDO. Go and see if there wifes do that.
You see my friend it's not a matter of a name called or skin colour, it's how much you're Omani inside you. Will that black man from Sur speak broken Arabic? If you want to melt and be excepted in a society, it's to change to fit. Otherwise you accept being different and accept people looking at you in that way. About descrimination in the government, I don't think this's true. Most of them have superior jobs in defence and military. And most of their women work and even run private business which is something I always admired.
I have nothing against these people and personally have many good friends from them. They're successful, highly educated and ambitious. But still more Zanzibarees than Omanis!
