View Full Version : Learn More About Condoms

Condoms are highly effective in preventing sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. They also reduce the risk of pregnancy.
But you must use condoms consistently and correctly every time you have sex!
Talk to your partner about safer sex. Then, follow these steps for correct condom use:
Go to the store or health clinic and buy condoms. Make sure you check the expiration date on the box!
The most common kind of condom is made out of latex. But if you or your partner is allergic to latex, you can also get condoms made out of polyurethane. Lambskin condoms can protect against pregnancy, but do not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV.
When you are ready to have sex, check the expiration date on the individual condom packet.
Once the penis is erect, open condom package with your fingers. Don't use your teeth, or any sharp object, because you might accidentally break the condom!
Squeeze the tip of condom with your fingers and place the rolled condom on head of penis.
Leave a half-inch space at the tip of the condom to collect semen.
Hold the tip of condom and unroll until penis is completely covered. If the condom doesn't unroll easily - it is probably upside down. If it is upside down, then remove the condom, throw it away, and try again using new condom.
After ejaculation, while the penis is still erect, hold condom at base of penis and carefully remove the condom without spilling any semen.
Wrap the condom in tissue, or tie it in a knot and throw it away. (Don't flush the condom down toilet.)
Use a NEW condom for every act of vaginal, oral, and anal intercourse.
It is also helpful to practice. Men can practice on themselves, and women can practice with bananas!
DO’s and DON’Ts of Condom Use!
DO use a condom each and every time you have sex.
DO check the expiration date.
DO use water-based or silicone-based lubricants, such as KY Jelly, Astroglide or Eros.
DO NOT use a condom more than once
DO NOT use two condoms at the same time. The friction between the condoms may cause them to tear.
DO NOT use oil-based lubricants (like petroleum jelly or baby oil). They can cause the condom to break.
Do not use a condom if the individual condom packet is ripped.

Imagine this scenario:
Jim and Stacey are high school seniors who've been dating for a year. After talking it over, they decide they are mature and careful enough to have sex. Since they know that having unprotected sex can lead to unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), they plan to use protection. So, they go to their local drugstore and head to the condom section.
Jim and Stacey thought that they could just go the condom section, grab a box of Trojans, and go home. But what they found startled them—from floor to ceiling were dozens of multicolored boxes of different types of condoms: latex, sheepskin, spermicidal, flavored! They didn't have a clue which condom to pick out. They went home in a daze, without purchasing any condoms.
Don't let this happen to you! Today, with so many choices out there, it's important to know which type of condom is right for you, and how to use condoms correctly.
Condom 411
First, what's a condom? It's a sheath of thin rubber, plastic, or animal tissue that a male wears on his penis during oral, vaginal, or anal intercourse. A "reservoir-tip" at the end of the condom collects the male's semen from ejaculation. A condom also prevents transmission of other bodily fluids, like blood or vaginal fluids.
Anyone can buy condoms at a drugstore or supermarket, or get them at low cost or for free at a local health clinic. (You don't have to be a certain age.)
When used properly each and every time, latex condoms are 98-percent effective at preventing pregnancy. But the reality is that not everybody uses condoms properly every time. This brings the effectiveness rate down to 85 percent. Latex condoms are also effective at preventing the spread of STDs, including HIV and gonorrhea.
Know Your Types
Condoms are made of three different materials. The first type of material is latex, which is a kind of rubber.
"Latex is the most common and effective type of condom to prevent pregnancy and STD transmission," says Rebecca Bedner, community education coordinator at the Family Tree Clinic, in St. Paul, MN.
The second type of material is polyurethane, which is a type of plastic.
"Polyurethane condoms are generally used by people who are allergic to latex," says Bedner.
But beware! Polyurethane is not as flexible as latex, so a polyurethane condom can slip off more easily during intercourse.
The third and least effective type of material is natural skin (or lambskin). These condoms are effective at preventing pregnancy, but not STD transmission. Why? Natural skin condoms contain natural pores that are larger than many STDs, such as HIV, and smaller viruses can pass through the pores of the condom.
Wet vs. Dry
Some condoms come with lubrication. Lubricated condoms are known as "wet" condoms. Non-lubricated condoms are known as "dry" condoms. Lubricated condoms can help prevent condom breakage.
"Many people prefer using lubricated condoms, because the extra fluid on the condom may make intercourse feel more comfortable or more enjoyable," says Bedner.
Some condoms are lubricated with nonoxynol-9, a spermicide that kills sperm.
"But if a person uses a condom with spermicide on it and notices an itching or burning sensation, that person should stop using it, because he or she may be allergic to spermicide."
When adding lubrication to a dry latex condom, Bedner warns that only water-based—not oil-based—lubrication should be used.
"Oil and latex do not mix," she says.
"Never put baby oil, Vaseline, or anything made with oil on a latex condom, because it may eat a hole through the latex. There are lubricants made with water that are safe for condoms," she says.
K-Y Jelly or AstroGlide are safe lubricants for condoms.
Added Features
Condoms also come in a variety of sizes and textures, such as ribbed. Ribbings, located at the base of many condoms, can enhance sensation for the partner.
"Different people prefer different types of condoms. People should use the type that they feel the most comfortable with," says Bedner.
Condoms also come in a variety of colors and flavors. Bedner says that these specialty condoms should be used with caution.
"Condoms can be different colors and/or different flavors. Generally, flavored condoms should be used for oral sex. The flavoring may cause infection if the condom is used for other types of intercourse. Some condoms are considered novelty condoms [like glow-in-the-dark ones]. Novelty condoms are for fun only and should not be used for protection against pregnancy or STDs," says Bedner.
As with any type of condom, it's important to read the label to make sure the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves the condom for use against unplanned pregnancy and STDs. It's important to check the expiration date, too (it's printed right on the package).
Stay Educated
Even though so many condom types are on the market, choosing a condom doesn't have to be an impossible task. After all, condom use is extremely important for teens that are having sex. So, don't go into a drugstore unprepared like Jim and Stacey.
That day, they left the drugstore in a daze, not knowing which kind of condom to buy. They could have asked for help from a pharmacist, an adolescent health clinic, or a trusted adult. But instead, they let their emotions get the better of them, went back to Jim's home, and had sex without protection—leaving them at risk for unplanned pregnancy and STDs.
Remember: don't let this happen to you! Get the facts about condoms, and practice safer sex each and every time.

What I cannot stand is men who refuse to wear a condom because of the way it "feels" and automatically assume a woman wears or uses protection so there is NO pregnancy. This can happen IN and OUT of a marriage. A man is always partly responsible for ANY pregancy or disesase that comes around.
Jihad4Truth

Well, the people I know who have large numbers of children--five, six, seven or eight--do it because they think that's normal life and what people should ordinarily do. Not because of some agenda to "take over the world".
And many of them are highly intelligent people with advanced degrees.
As far as the less well educated people from abroad who follow this pattern, it seems to be for the same reason: This is normal life, it's what people do. Get married and have children.
The hyper-anxious, overplanned idea that you "follow your dreams" and "build your life" until you are thirty or so and then get married and then decide if you're going to have children after you're "established" and then maybe have one or two if you aren't divorced by that time seems to result in social fragmentation, individual misery and a geometric population implosion in which your civilization sputters out and dies.

My only beef with people who have a ton of kids is if they can afford to take care of them (i.e. food, clothing, adequate shelter, medical needs) etc....I come from a large family...my mom used to tell me how at times they could only have one meal a day due to the fact my grandfather's salary was low and there were already more than six kids (in total 14 but 12 survived through infancy). If a couple knows that bringing in more kids can always cause suffering then practice safe sex. (I.E. guys use a condom).

Come on Jeff, you set that one up. Perhaps I am skeptical of the motives of people who like to have 8 children as that seems crazy to me. But I am sure they are very good and decent people.
And I am suspicious of the Aztlan movement here, that traditionally has very large families and are becoming the majority. But that is a different subject.
My true concern is the environment. Too many people means too much stress on the environment and too much conflict and tension fighting over the limited resources. And I hate seeing what was a forest turn into a parking lot.
And if everybody has 8 children, then it gets out of control.

While I do share your concern about the direction we are headed, I am not sure it is so dire. Civillization is certainly not dying. But individual unique cultures are becoming more homogenized.
We just have different opinions as to what the solution is. You say have more kids. I say more kids means more mouths to feed and thus taking attention away from bettering individual lives.
How many parents of 8 kids can afford to give all 8 kids the best upbringing, the least stressful, safest and happiest childhoods, the most opportunities to grow and then send all 8 kids to college, etc etc? Not many.

That sounds logical, but I think it's wrong.
I think focussing on "bettering individual lives" tends to make us short sighted and selfish and less able and interested in taking care of things and people.
Looking at people as an economic good tends to distort all values it seems to me. One child is worth X under such and such circumstances and worth Y under other circumstances...less than a tree or a sailboat perhaps.
OUR civilization is dying, indeed it is. We are dying out, and being replaced by others who have the will to live and to propagate.
Some of them may catch the disease, but in that case, they too will die out. And the world will be left to those who have kids.
I think the "skeptical about eight kids" stuff is really because you don't understand the mindset of those who do.
You can understand it even while considering it odd, if you like. It's more like vegetarianism...people who do it think it's a healthy organic lifestyle and worrying about "mouths to feed" and sitting around by yourself is like subsisting on Coke and Snickers bars.
I think the direction we are moving toward is one in which people are not free to have children as they wish, but have to get permission from the state. It's already there is germ (I don't mean you intend it that way, but it's implicit in the logic of your ideas) in what you say about the effect of kids on the environment and on the pocketbook of others.
The logical reaction if other people's kids are an unreasonable burden on you and your friends and not just on themselves is to express an interest in limiting that burden. I don't accuse you of this, but I think other people who think your way will naturally do so over time.
This will lead to the further breakdown of the family and to the plummeting population implosion in the West...which gets surprisingly little attention paid to it.

Jihad:
I've looked up the Aztlan movement, which I was unfamiliar with.
I very much doubt that such manifestoes actually have power to get very many people to take on the burden of additional children when they aren't already disposed to do so.
Somalis and Ethiopians and Mexicans (though the birth dearth is unfortunately beginning to affect Latin America as well) get married and have kids because that is what one does when one gets married.
They don't "plan" them and they don't consider them something to be grudgingly accepted if they can work out the right number of "coins to rub together".
They think of children as a blessing, which indeed they are! While we sit around trying to figure out new ways to have more and more sex while conceiving less and less often.
This is the way all of humanity has always thought, it's not some odd syndrome or the result of a Chicano manifesto.
You get married and you have kids and keep having them til they stop coming. You don't "plan" them and you don't worry too much about how much money you have. You deal. You cope. You'll provide for them somehow.
No, I applaud the irresponsible breeding rabbits who don't worry about what to rub together. They shall inherit the earth. And they deserve it!

Jeff, I don't know where you get off suggesting that people who plan their pregnancies do not love their own children.
And Humanity has always bred a lot, because up until about 100 years ago, half the people born did not live past childhood. It's nature's way of ensuring the survival of the species.

It doesn't make any sense whatsoever! :os Besides, I strongly doubt that anyone follows it, or else Oman's population will be booming!

And you check yours.
What she said was right. I am 100% sure that the families use birth control methods and I know some of my family do. That is the reason why they have little children.
If they don't use birth control methods then they are either unable to get kids or (for some reason) know when to get "out" before the baby comes, if you know what i mean... But that is unlikely.
