New Job Skills Program for Young Omani Women
________________________________________

AMIDEAST, with funding from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, is conducting a new program for young women who need assistance in finding employment.

Developing Women’s Career and Leadership Skills Scholarship Program
AMIDEAST is pleased to announce that, beginning 20 July 2008, applications will be accepted for a four-month program for young job-seeking women to improve job and leadership skills and provide English-language training. Funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the program itself will commence on 11 October 2008. America-Mideast Educational and Training Services, Inc. (AMIDEAST) is a private, nonprofit organization that strengthens mutual understanding and cooperation between Americans and the peoples of the Middle East and North Africa.

AMIDEAST is seeking applications from young women who are job-seekers and are eager to work on their English and job skills. Candidates should have graduated from a secondary school at least one year ago. Thirty young women will be selected and given scholarships for the program. The deadline for applications is 16 August 2008.

Trainees will participate in a number of carefully designed English language and enrichment courses, as well as activities appropriate for the development of leadership skills, career initiative, and real-world job experience. The four-month program will consist of a total of 320 hours of training. This training will include career-related communication and leadership skills as well as vocational skills directly relevant to local needs. Using practical training that includes role-playing and project work, the program will result in specific job-hunting strategies and action plans for entering the work force. Program content will also include material to build more general life skills, such as personal budgeting, knowledge of legal rights for women in Oman, and strategies for navigating personal relationships.

Upon completion of the program, participants will be entitled to continue using AMIDEAST’s library and computers to expand their job search (if they have not obtained employment upon graduation), to receive coaching and mentoring from AMIDEAST staff, and to form an alumni support and networking group.

Girls constitute almost half of the total school population in Oman, but once they enter the workforce, their representation plummets to less than one third. With His Majesty Sultan Qaboos’ encouragement of women to play an active role in society, a concerted effort to Omanize the labor force, and impressive growth in the Omani economy, girls and women stand to gain from employment opportunities if they can acquire the skills necessary to seize those opportunities.

For the many women who do not enter post-secondary programs, the workplace can be an intimidating, if not inaccessible, place. Many struggle to find and obtain employment, and if they are successful in finding a job, they may lack the workplace skills to perform effectively. This exciting and innovative program seeks to help develop participants’ linguistic, career-related, and leadership skills, employ training relevant to local needs and, overall, help promote workforce capacity in Oman.
