View Full Version : Obama declares nomination victory
Barack Obama has claimed victory in the battle to be the US Democratic party's presidential nominee.
"Tonight, I can stand here and say that I will be the Democratic nominee for president," he told nearly 20,000 supporters at a victory rally in Minnesota on Tuesday.
Al Jazeera's US media partner, NBC, is projecting that the Illinois senator has amassed enough delegates to become the first African-American candidate for US president from a major party.
Obama's rival, Hillary Clinton, congratulated him and told supporters in New York City that she would work for party unity.
But she did not concede the race and said she would consult with party leaders and supporters to determine her next move.
"This has been a long campaign and I will make no decisions tonight," she said.
"In the coming days I'll be consulting with supporters and party leaders to determine how to move forward with the best interests of our party and my country guiding my way."
Clinton indicated in a private conference call with New York politicians earlier on Tuesday that she would be open to running as vice-president with Obama and would do all she could to help the Democrats win the White House.
The battle between Obama and Clinton was one of the closest and longest nomination fights in recent US history.
Five months of voting concluded on Tuesday night with primaries in Montana, won by Obama, and South Dakota, won by Clinton, according to NBC projections.
Obama's campaign had urged the last 150 or so undecided superdelegates to make their endorsements before the voting ended and a steady flow complied, making their announcements throughout the day to give Obama the 2,118 votes he needed to defeat Clinton.

marianna 04-06-08, 04:14 PM I loved when he said this:
"I have brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, uncles and cousins, of every race and every hue, scattered across three continents, and for as long as I live, I will never forget that in no other country on Earth is my story even possible," he said.
Indeed....so very possible as history is being made.

Rock Devil 04-06-08, 09:08 PM I want Obama to win. :dev:
marianna 04-06-08, 10:58 PM The Times of London saw Obama's victory as evidence that "the United States remains a land of opportunity."
"This moment's significance is its resounding proof of the truism about America as a land of opportunity: Mr Obama's opportunity to graduate from Harvard and take Washington by storm," it wrote.
It said his victory also demonstrates "the opportunity that the world's most responsive democratic system gives its voters to be inspired by an unknown; the opportunity that outsiders now have to reassess the superpower that too many of them love to hate."
"Win or lose in November, he will have gone farther than anyone in history to bury the toxic enmity that fueled America's civil war and has haunted it ever since."
Arabian Princess 05-06-08, 12:19 PM Did anyone hear his speech infront of AIPAC yesterday? it just proves that America's allience with Israel doesnt depend on the president .. its a pre-written policy :)
Yes, and if he didn't say that he will not be elected espacially by the American Jews.
Exactly IceTea. If Obama didnt say what he said, he would never get elected.
I am not surprised, and I won't be surprised on November when Obama wins. Anyhow, I wonder where are "some" members who were making usual nonsense claims of Obama going doing after the whole Pastor issue? Don't feel so smart anymore eh' :p

Who you talkin' about, Ol' Buddy? :p
I didn't say he wouldn't win the Democratic nomination. I think he will!
But I think Hilary is right: He can't win the election.
But let's wait and see. If he does, I'll come back and eat crow.
If he doesn't I can come back and say, "I told you so!"
Okay? :p

May we know the reaons behind such unshakable policy?
marianna 05-06-08, 05:34 PM Enough lovely threads have already discussed (I mean beaten) this issue to death so just do a search sweet Tea.
Jeff, I wasn't talking about you, I know you are a McCain guy (sadly), I was taking about "someone" else ;)
May we know the reaons behind such unshakable policy?
Americans agree with it, Israel is our friend, we have a long-standing relationship with them, we have religious and cultural ties to them, they are a Western oriented nation, etc, etc. And the Israelis and American Jews are well organized and good at influencing the government.
Maybe because we don't see 'Death to America' rallies by Israelis ?
ToomuchaT 05-06-08, 10:45 PM It would be interesting to know the truth of this election. There is always some thing (maybe be someone) behind these political elections (not just in Zimbabwe).

Voting. People vote and the votes are counted. ;)
Mr Tickle 06-06-08, 01:00 PM Ice tea,
Would you vote for Obama (if you could)?
Went to dinner last night with 25 Hillary supporters at Texas democratic convention ...
About a half of them said they will not vote for Obama if Hillary is not on the ticket as VP ...
About a 3rd of them said they could not vote and will not vote for Obama ... PERIOD ... they will cross over and vote McCain
Ofcourse this won't matter much in Texas which McCain is projected to carry anyway.
If other states that are borderline feels the same ... it's good night Messiah :p
Woooww ...
3 hours into the convention I've spoken to 100 or so Hillary delegates.
This message rings for them too and the % of delegates that will crossover and vote for McCain is holding up also.

Yes more and more life long democrats are turning to McCain (http://blog.pumapac.org/2008/06/08/1000-reasons-puma-democrats-are-protesting-the-2008-presidential-election/#comments)
Ha ha ha live fox news ******** and spin on this thread!
Well, it's a VERY odd election year as the long, extended race with Hilary shows...
Everyone expected her to be the Democratic nominee.
And for that matter, the nomination of McCain, who no one expected to be the Republican nominee.
There is a fascinating piece by Michael Barone in today NRO examining the question of who will win the election.
The smart bet would still be Obama...
So who’s going to win? In a parliamentary system, the answer would be easy: Obama. Voters prefer Democrats to Republicans generically....
On the presidency, it’s a different story. The most recent polls collected by realclearpolitics.com show Obama leading McCain by an average of 47 percent to 45 percent...
But the popular vote is one thing and the electoral vote, as we learned eight years ago, may be another. In all the statewide public polls taken in February, March, April, and May, McCain leads Obama in 29 states with 281 electoral votes and Obama leads McCain in 21 states with 254 electoral votes
So, if the election were held today and the polls were correct, McCain would win.
But there are a lot of weird factors...some normally Democratic states are hugely for McCain (West Virginia). Some normally Democratic states are very narrowly divided (Massachusetts).
Some normally Republican states are narrowly divided (Texas).
Obama does well among well-off Democrats. But in these economically difficult times, he does poorly among poor Democrats, older Democrats and women.
Barone ends with this observation:
[r]ight now, at midpoint, this looks like a presidential race unlike any other.
