marianna 27-05-08, 01:50 AM I am listening to hibero music from Puerto Rico...is like folk music from the 1950's and 1960's. Vibrant....
Do you ever listen to music that your parents did when they were young if so what kind?
death rose 27-05-08, 01:54 AM ahahaha No!
dad used to listen to fairoz (however her name is spelled like :p)
uumm .. boring :P
marianna 27-05-08, 01:55 AM I grew up listening to Puerto Rican folk music...earliest memory I have is about 3 years of age---mom is singing with her songs and cleaning. I am sitting in a chair and picturing in my mind what it is like on the island. That feeling of peace always remained.
minerva 27-05-08, 01:57 AM my parents were into the beatles and the stones.....very easy to follow music. i love 70's rock too...they have a big collection of 70's vinyls. black sabbath, led zeppelin, floyd and hendrix. oh and deep purple...i used to put those records on when alone in the house as a kid.
marianna 27-05-08, 02:05 AM Here is a song I am listening to and mom is singing it right now:

En las montañas de Borinquen bella
entre la sombras de un platanar,
vive mi amada linda doncella
la jíbarita de mi cantar.
Cantan las aves en la enramada
murmura el río una oración.
Y en la ventana de mi adorada
se oyen las notas de mi canción.
Ven aca jíbarita mia
que yo voy caminito a la ciuda'
que mañana nos vamos a pasia
en tu labio fecundo amor y rosa.
Ay lara lara lara lay, lo re lo lai lerola
Mi jíbarita de tez rosada
de negros ojos y gracias mil
esta esperandome en la ventana
y sonriendo me dice asi . . .

In the mountains of Borinquen
beautiful among the shadows of a banana plantation,
my beloved pretty maiden lives the jíbarita of my heart to sing.
They sing to the birds in the
bows which murmurs to the river a prayer.
And in the window of my worshipped
the notes of my song is heard.
They see my jíbarita that I go down the path to the city and
tomorrow we go to the passage of your lip so fertile of love and rose.
Oh lara lara lara lay
My jíbarita of pink complexion of black eyes and a thousand thank yous
you wait for me at the window and smiling tells me like this . .
God bless you my sweet one
I give anxious my blessing and with my kisses I worship you in my dreams and thus I go with you my heart.
They see my jíbarito
you will not remain in the city and tomorrow
we are going to marry and I expect you alone in the little house.

marianna 27-05-08, 08:32 PM I have heard of Um Kalthoum. Heard she was one of the greatest Arab female singers of all time. Was she originally from Egypt? Not sure.
yes yes yes yes!!!
And I much prefer music of that era to the music of today.
Eric Clapton, Sting, Eagles, Queen, Phil Collins being some of my most favourite.
marianna 27-05-08, 08:38 PM I like all of those....my daughter has a CD with the best of Queen. I am like: "Rock on girl!"
My dad was into those .. my mum was into alot of music from the 60's.. know so many.. just not familiar with the names that much.. carpenters, beach boys, beatles, monkeys, lulu, supremes, gerry and the pacemakers etc.. I know.. but so many I don't, yet know their music..

Same for me. Give me a new fire, old music, and old book, an old armchair, old brandy, an old cigar and old memories.
Old, old memories that reach back before I was born.
UmKhalid 28-05-08, 12:00 AM Are songs nowadays even songs? More like noise with a rythem.
If I ever felt like listening to something, which is rare, I would choose something on the same line with:
(1): Um Adil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhaDI_q5nfI)
(2): Abu Khalid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChuyCYN1XFA)

I agree for the most part, but I kinda liked that "Don't stand for Nothing" song, didn't you?
UmKhalid 28-05-08, 12:21 AM Compared to classics, it's nothing.
But don't care about what I say, you're listening to someone who has been suffering for almost 5 months now because the bus driver likes to put Hala Fm everyday. The stupidity of the songs makes me want to cry, and destroy the speakers.
In the meantime!
Noora, Noora, Ya Noora. (http://www.mawaly.com/file/play/19297.html)

I don't know what that song says, but I feel certain I agree!
Sometimes when something is missing it leaves an ache behind. And when it returns! You want to sing a different kind of song... :)
But I can't figure out how to get it to play! When I click on the link, all I see is funny squiggly lines...some kind of foreign alphabet I guess...
Just Fairouz, other than that my parents and I have very different taste in music, and they don't even listen to English.
