View Full Version : Mods Locking up Threads

I have recently noticed that the quality of discussion in this Sabla is slowly going down. Why you may ask?

U see, some of our mods have itchy fingers.

I dont really find it particularly healthy when a member posts a topic and we all agree. This is the theme our mods go along with.

Once the discussion gets hot, lots of disagreements, the thread gets locked, and the fun is over.

Do we want the Sabla to behave like Greek mythology? Where the greek gods would come up with a divine rule, it gets followed without questioning, or explanation.

Please feel free to disagree, it will make me feel better.

I disagree, for the sake of making you feel better.

No offense whatsoever Markov, but so many threads have been started and locked ironically about this very same topic. So I'm guessing that to them you're just a broken record.

i agree with ap. if you don't want a thread to disintegrate and get locked, participate in it and stay on topic.

now don't let this thread be about the holy trinity as well (get my drift?)

It isn’t fun to all moderators with no exception to lock thread and as you said English Sabla is there to open threads to discuss

BUT ( and here is the fun part :D )

When members give us a hard time by breaking rules, going off topic almost in pages, attacking each others, opening nonsense topics, not respecting other opinions either they do agree with or not, etc ….

Will you be kind to tell me what shall we do :)

Storm just locked one thread now in religion for no valid reason. ;)

Okay, on a more serious note so that the members don't think that I've gone completely insane, I just want to say that we cannot satisfy all members, one member might agree that the thread should be locked and others will complain just as the case is over here, so we take these sort of complains with a grain of salt and just do what we think is best for the forum and it's members and so far it has worked well for us and that's probably what's most important. It's not about us mods having some sort of moronic need to lock every thread in our way, it's just that we think that the sabla could do without that thread or that we just want to keep the order in the forum and stay away from discussions that lead to disrespect and probably even the banning of members, we hate to ban so in order to avoid that we lock the thread to keep the members from saying something that might lead them to being kicked out of here. So you see..if you really think about it, the locking is actually an act of care and support to our members because we enjoy having them here with us.

I don't think so, but sometimes things are linked when discussing religion.

Angel_Eyes
08-05-08, 02:45 PM
^you have a point in that..
everything leads to something.

IceTea
08-05-08, 02:48 PM
Exactly, sometimes there is a need for comparison and providing evidences during the discussion, that doesn't mean it's off topic.

NicoBambi

Yes, but here you're asking Storm the reason why she locked a thread.. juts PM her.. it's easier :cute:

And I don't think everything is linked to religion, because some people don't have any .. :)

^Does that make me colour blind :o?

Honestly, I really wanted to see IceTea's reply in that thread that Storm locked today...But he'll PM me with what his reply was, right Ice ;)?

But I get the mods...I've been there and done that, and sometimes threads can spiral wildly off-topic and the deletion of the off-topic posts is almost impossible (since a bunch of them are a) pretty interesting to read or b) very long so it will piss off the members to delete them). And in that case, the only solution is locking...

We've had that done several times in the Religion Sabla because certain like to drag unnecessary and repetitive discussions into certain threads that have nothing to do with their additions...And yes, that includes both non-Muslim and Muslim members too.

That results in someone else replying to them and a new discussion starts...A totally off-topic one. But it would be really easier if you can split the thread starting from the off-topic posts if the off-topic posts are not useless ones. I think that can be done  and you just have to link the old thread in the starting post through easy edit. Well, lots of work, but it'll prevent threads like this from popping up every now and then!

We've had new members who are learning English, they've tried opening threads for discussion but their threads ended up being locked with a lame comment.

I wonder, do all threads here have to be in 'perfect' English? If the topic of the thread was understandable, even if the grammar wasn't perfect, why does it get locked?

If that is the case, all threads will be locked.

Another thing, since there is no explanation/justification for locking threads, lets open a sticky thread which all complaints/justifications for locking threads go there, so at least everyone is in picture

That is true, but when the thread starter does not make sense, you can't expect us to keep it open simply because we don't know what the topic is about and that causes confusions and lots of off topics.

If a person does not know how to string a couple of words together to write an understandable thread, then we can't do anything but lock it. After all, we don't want sabla looking as if its members write nothing but gibberish :inno:.

If a member does not know how to initiate a topic, then I would be more than happy to receive private messages from them and re-write what they're trying to say in a manner understandable to all members. So there, they are free to open a thread so long as there's a clear topic attached to it.
