the railway project was for ease of transportation of goods between batna and the new Duqm port which i think will be a big acheivement for the Sultanate...Taxi drivers could work locally if there is a real problem which i dont should come for them...
the problem might come for the logistics companies cuz after opening of Sohar and Duqm port, there was a huge market for trucks and trailers which wont be so big after the arrival of trade railway lines...but still there wil be market a lot of opportunities for them too

To be honest, it's very difficult to realize this ( if you're talking about Inter-city train lines connecting Muscat and Salalah )
Constructing a railway line is very expensive. Plus, the yield for railway business in a country of 2.8 million like Oman sounds very risky. Oman is a very sparsely populated country , thus traffic might be disappointing. There is no "big" cities if you draw a line between Muscat and Salalah .
I think road and air travel are the way to go for Oman ! The roads in Oman are still heavily underutilized plus Oman a country of 300,000 square kms need good air connectivity to transport people fast in long distance.

I think Oman's infrastructure is still in the developing stage - it's going through it's own little growth spurt right now with all the plans for highways here and freeways there. I think that this railway might throw things off kilter in that sense. Plus what Tropikalboy says is true - we have a very small population. We need to have more normal roads first connecting cities before factoring in railways.
If there's ever a big increase in the population, or some sort of demographic shift, the railway system the way they build it now might not be so effective for the Oman of the future.

I’m very strongly supporting the train project.
To divert little bit from your main subject , If it is me, by today u will find the train lines connecting Bandar Al-Jassa to a to al- Seep, passing through high population areas like Ruwi, Qurum, lekhwair; Muscat airport.
When we talk about the train benefits, we have to take overall picture in next 20 years minimum, with current trend of increasing vehicles in Muscat, it is impossible to live with the traffic in the next 10 years.
Around 500,000 per year increase in vehicle figure, where u think these driven, sure mostly Muscat.
Building train project is expensive, but it is can be very feasible economically when it set against building and breaking black tops/ bridges/ cross way/ traffic junctions , due to fact of high capacity at minimum space that train system can facilitate
For the project you are referring too, I thinks it’s a good step in 1) improving the industry transportation 2) reduces the truck exposure on the main road causing main accidents all across

I expect them to be built after 50 years + (if we still got any good income resources)
In fact I think Oman is doing a good strategic planning. I don't think Oman is doing this just by looking at the short term of 10-30 years. I think they're building all these infrastructure seeing the future in this country of all that people will be coming in for business, to reside, who are going to invest in those new real estate projects and so on. The government is taking a step ahead just because they fear it may turn out being like Dubai. Many people do say we are far far far away from Dubai, the fact is its not, the fact is Oman never wanted to be like the Dubai of today. If you look at today's UAE people are mad, they don't know what's happening, its more like the development is happening so fast and so quick without thinking of the concequences of later, and now they end up with that sort of heavy traffic, where they're unable to control, unable to assist, nothing can be done, but even then they took it posetively towards making business and generating revenues for the country and its people.
The whole plan of our Oman is not to get into such situations, if you look at world wide cities none were growing in the pace of Dubai today, well from the other side its a world RECORD, get one of the guiness books of world record and read about the highest developed cities in short term, you will see that Dubai is one of them. But see what grows quick will never stay for long, that's my opinion.
However, I think this whole plan of having Railway right now only for goods, and later develop it for passenger (optional) as said by the minister, is a good strategic planning in my opinion.
