View Full Version : Traveling alone ?
MissKindy 28-04-08, 11:59 PM Since summer is coming soon (cant wait ) I'll be traveling alone this time for the first time in my life and I am honestly freaking out as I'm not the kind of person who you can leave alone to do such a thing :p
So I need some advice like what should i do ?
What if someone tried talking to me ?
What if I enter the wrong plane or gate ?
I need some help please:rolleyes:
Traveling alone is so much fun, to me. I hate traveling with my family, and I have been traveling alone for more than 4 years now... even when my family and I are going to the same place, I travel before or after them to be alone. It's just fun.
You shouldn't be paranoid. I think when I traveled alone for the first time I was your age, or even younger than you. It's very normal and you'll see that by yourself. My advice is that if you need any assistance or guidance, don't ask normal people as they might lead you to wrong places. Ask officials or security in the airports. They will be more than glad to help you.
AMARANT 29-04-08, 12:04 AM ^^ i had the same feeling the 1st time i travelled on a plane alone, (only i was already 20 xD)
but believe me, u think that u wont know how to finish paper work or where to go, but in the end, things will go smoothly...
and it depends where r u going to, if ur going to a country where many people dont speak english, that would be a problem xD
Where are you going and where are you going to stay ? and for how long and why ? :D
squinty 29-04-08, 12:07 AM It is not hard.
Just remember to have the STRENGTH to take your own bags! :XD:
For paperwork you can also always ask for guidance from officials in airports. You shouldn't worry about that...
MissKindy 29-04-08, 12:10 AM Where are you going and where are you going to stay ? and for how long and why ? :D
Lol El Rey calm down by traveling alone i mean i'll be alone in the plane only =p my dad will be waiting in the airport when i arrive :cute:..I'm going to Malaysia for about a month I'll stay with my dad :)
Amarant I'm going to Malayisa I've been there many times but with my family not alone so I'm just wondering how will it feel like being alone
Lol then there is going nothing you will do and worry about. Am sure there will be somene to drop you in the airport. Check your flight ticket and get to the right gate. Go into the plane and all you have to do is sit and wait to reach Malaysia lol . Wish you an interesting stay in there :cute:
MissKindy 29-04-08, 12:17 AM Lol ..thank you but what if i get lost there i need to take a inner train and what if i enter the wrong train ?:os
I think you have to do a pre-plan for what you're going to do there. Contact your father first and let him assure you he will be waiting for you. Ask about the train and how to get the tickets in there and which train to take and after how many stations you have to stop and get out. Draw an imaginary view of it and when you be there everything will be fine inshalah.

Thank you guys hope it truns okay
Malaysia airport is easy :P just follow the ppl! hehehe
when ur out of the plain every1 wants to go to the same place.. immigration, then baggage is just 30 steps away from immigration
Libellula 29-04-08, 02:28 AM I fly alone all the time since I study/live abroad. I've never had a problem, and to be honest I prefer flying alone. I would guess most airports have clear signs, so you can't get lost or confused about what to do. Check in at the desk (hand over any luggage you want checked in), go through security, look at the screen to see what gate your flight's boarding from, either chill in the lounge or wait next to the gate or do some duty free shopping. When the flight starts boarding they normally announce it over the speakers, so you can head to your gate if you aren't there already. If you've got a transit somewhere make sure you know where you need to go for your connecting flight. You can't possibly get on the wrong flight; your boarding pass is checked when you go through the gate, and then again when you enter the plane.

How do you feel as a Sudanese travelling in America, and to Texas at that?
Have you been treated well? Have you felt comfortable so far? No need to be polite... :)
Manchester 29-04-08, 02:37 AM I'm used to being alone on the plane coming back from Toronto to Oman take about 17 hrs on the flight. You get used after you have done it several times.
Kuala Lumpur Airport is easy to figure out. Just follow the signs and ask any of the officials if in doubt. Hopefully you will have fun there.
5alfanooh 29-04-08, 02:59 AM thats flying alone :p there is a difference between traveling alone and flying alone.. anyways it is so easy.. i've been flying alone since i was 13 lol
All you need to know is the counter that you gonna drop ur bag in, then the Gate Number through your boarding pass which they gonna give it to you in the counter, then go through customs and finally to your flight gate :D
and when you reach destination, Follow the Baggage sign and then when you reach the baggage claiming area, check in which line your bag will be rolling, collect your bag and them through costums and finally your dad will welcome you inshallah lol..
^ He said it all mashallah! :p
Good luck girl =)
personally i travel alone twice a year and i don't like it it gets so boring when your alone i usually watch movies through out my flight sometimes when the person next to me talk I'll always talk back i don't mind talking to strangers:p. you should always bring books and magazines.
Trust me its not possible to enter a wrong plane with the securities these days i hardly dough it .

Yes Jeff, there's no need to be polite. I'll be extremely honest.
Although I think this will be an off-topic, I have to reply to you here...
Before coming to the US, I've been hearing a lot of horror stories about the US immigration borders and all that... the interviews you get when you enter the country for the first time, FBI, and all that. I heard those stories from people who both traveled to the US before and people who did not.
When I left Oman, I was expecting to stay in the airport when I arrive the US for not less than 2 or 3 hours.. being interviewed and investigated before being let to enter the country. My first point of entering the US was Chicago, IL. It's a big airport, with more than 60 counters in the immigration. So when I entered Chicago, the airport was kind of empty since my flight was the only flight to arrive at that time. I had all my papers ready with me and everything filled and ready to be seen by the immigration officer. And guess what? After exactly 5 minutes from leaving the plane, I was let in the US of America. I stayed for less than 2 minutes in the immigration counter, INCLUDING staying in queue. I was greeted by the immigration officer like an American citizen, and I have to say that the officer was very nice and friendly. She just looked at my passport, and stamped it immediately without asking any "weird" questions. She welcomed me in the US and told me that I was free to go. I entered the US without facing any problems. I stayed in the immigration for less than 5 minutes when I was expecting to be stuck in the immigration for more than 3 hours. My father and brother were surprised that I was not interviewed in the airport, but the fact of the matter is that I wasn't only not interviewed, but I only spent less than 5 mins in the immigration.
All the officers I've met in Chicago & Texas airports were very friendly. When I traveled from north Texas to west Texas a couple of months ago, I was selected to go through a random secondary security screening (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secondary_Security_Screening_Selection). Even the officer who did that secondary screening to me was nice and friendly. I wasn't treated in a bad way just because I am a foreigner and in this country in a student visa. In fact, I've been treated really well.
Since I'm being honest here, I would like to mention the only thing I didn't like. In Chicago, IL when I first entered the US and after passing the immigration, while waiting for my baggage in the baggage claim, a police officer came with a dog INSIDE the airport and the dog was checking the passengers & their baggages in the airport at that time. This procedure should be done outside the airport, when the baggage is being carried from the airplane to the airport. But apparently the weather was too cold that time in Chicago and maybe they didn't want the dog to do that in the extremely cold weather? So they let the dog do it inside the airport?
I didn't like that because I don't like dogs. In fact, I fear dogs. If they come close to me, I would move and stay away from them. Since this officer was walking the dog around all the passengers, I had to stay in my place not to raise any suspects. The dog came close to me and started sniffing and I really hated that. It was my first time staying at my place when a dog comes close to me, but I didn't move because as I said I didn't want to raise any suspects.
I traveled within the US for three or four times since I arrived here and honestly I've been treated very well, just like a citizen.
However, if I'm ever not treated very well, I will let you know. :D
I hope the next time I'm coming from Sudan or Oman I don't face any troubles, just like the first time I entered the country.
Just dont let ur excitment make u forget ur luggage behind when ur at the airport :P

Cinnamon Queen 29-04-08, 09:10 AM Just take it easy, breathe! If someone talks to you, talk back, theres no harm in that, because your opt to get bored during the flight. Well, I usually talk to people, unless they look like dodgy arabs then I'll stay quite and try to doze off :P hahaha.
I dont think its very possible to enter the wrong plane or gate, it usually goes smoothly but if you have any doubts feel free to ask.

I don't think I have the gutts to fly alone. Without my family, ok, but with at least another person.
I say start talking to the person/people sitting next to you on the airplane, when they're friendly enough, bring it to them that it's your first time flying alone and a bit worried. They'll feel sorry for you, remember when they first flew alone and help Insha'Allah.
toxic_honey 29-04-08, 11:30 AM at first u will freak out.. and you have to know everything about their airports and everything!
but why ur traveling alone this time? is theres going to be anyway waiting for you there?
MissKindy,
There is a first time for everything, so this is your first time flying alone a few months from now you will look back at all this excitement.
Generally, airports are much safer than many streets at anytime of day or night.
At the departure: (Which I assume Muscat Int. Airport)
1. Make sure you arrive at least two hours before flight time.
2. As soon as you reach the lounge, check the flight details screen for your flight number, this will give you the checkin counter number, boarding gate and boarding time.
3. Go to the checkin counter
4. From there, walk to the departure gates, if you have time, you can browse thru duty free (buy something for your dad) or stay at the coffee shop, all the time keeping an eye on the flight details screen
5. Once ready go to the departure gate, and off you go....
Arrival:
1. As soon as the big bird touches down switch on your mobile phone and let your dad know you have just landed.
2. Inside the airport building, follow a sign which says Arrivals/Baggage Claim, this shud lead you to immigration counter, then to the baggage area and to exit.
If am not mistaken, u need to take a train somewhere to cross between buildings. Whatever it is, just follow the signs (Arrivals/Baggage claim)
A word of caution, never carry anything for somebody u just met during the trip.
Hope this helps.
*shushu* 29-04-08, 11:48 AM Once, I was kind of travelling alone -no parents, just two brothers- and I lost the passports at the transit. :o Imagine!! 20 minutes before we were supposed to board the plane, I checked my bag to see if I had the passports with me and they weren't there! I was freaking out!! I checked the whole lounge -or so I thought:p- the bathroom, sitting area, the food place:inno: and still nothing! My two brothers of course freaking out with me, lol *one is two years older than me, the other is two years younger than me* So we ask the lady at the lounge and she was like no! The clock is ticking and still no sign of the passports! We're running around the lounge looking up and down for the passports. Then a lady went up to my younger brother and she was like did you lose your passport, my brother was like yeah. So, she showed him three passports and thank god it was ours! He asked her where it was, she said by one of the computers:inno: Ha-ha! Opps:rolleyes::p I went up to my brother, not knowing the passports were found. He wanted to trick me but, after he saw that I had this *OMG, we're stranded in a country with no way out, look on my face* he didn't, lol:p
-----
But don't worry, you'll do just fine, lol:p

Ohno... It will be very easy :) If you can't find the gates or something, you can simply ask people around. If you're more than 10 years old ( and you do :D based on your writing skill ) you can handle it by yourself.
I know Kuala Lumpur Airport is damn huge....and you must take Train to get to the Immigration.... well.. you can simply follow other pasenggers :)
squinty 29-04-08, 02:03 PM Just dont let ur excitment make u forget ur luggage behind when ur at the airport :P

That is only you! :p
Miss Kindy... If you FEAR going through the WRONG gate then remember you have the "ticket" to see WHICH gate it is! :p
Or you can simply ask anyone who works there (as in the flight attendents or someone from the gate) to help you.
It is not so hard really.
The only part I hate when travelling alone is the HEAVY bag I have to DRAG everywhere! :p
Since my family LOVE me so they put a LOT of things that I DON'T need! :XD:
Endure Whisper 29-04-08, 04:24 PM Stick to the signs.
Keep your ears focused to the public announcements.
If you're hesitated about anything, ask the people/staff around you.
Enjoy your flight :)
Diabian 29-04-08, 04:48 PM Don't talk to strengers :dev:
PiZzaZz 29-04-08, 05:50 PM It's sooo much fun travelling alone!
Always check and recheck that you have your passport, travelling ticket and some money on you.
Other than that, just enjoyyy yourself, talk to the person sitting next to you, explore the airports, simply create an adventure for yourself :p
Oh oh and don't forget to carry a camera with you! The most important gadget :D

FAITH86 29-04-08, 08:53 PM At first you might feel weird and maybe scared but later on all will be just fine and you'd definitely wish if you can travel all alone once again.
Take it easy and enjoy you travel ;)
