When we have guests we use dining table with option of hands or knives and forks.

good idea elvenblade..i actually like those tables..it's like a mixture of the middle eastern culture and western culture..you sit at the table and on the floor at the same time. :)

I hate sitting on the floor, my bum and legs always go numb very quickly. I'm just not used to it as we never sit on the floor at home. Also, I never eat with my hands. Even if I am invited somewhere and everyone's eating with their hands, I ask for my own plate and cutlery. I hate those big plates they put on the floor and everyone just digs in. I get disgusted just watching it :os

I detest it. Completely HATE it.

And how the hell can you eat with the plate so far from your face? It always creates a huge friggen mess. Don't even get me started.

Lately I've started to take my own plate onto a table. I can't eat from the floor. Period.

Finger food, yes I eat with fingers. But most food you need cutlery for it.

Once i was in a family ceremony and they did bring those big plates
and i remember i had long nails and couldnt stand eating with my hands
so i asked for a spoon! you should really know how women were giving me looks .. it was funny somehow lol...

i prefer to sit on the floor..queen and nosa, i agree with you both..it DOES taste better! :p lol..when i am really really hungry and i'm at home, i'll eat with my hands. Usually i eat with a spoon though. However, when i eat at restaurants, i always eat with a fork. :XD:

when you have a variety of food on your plate, do you eat it in order...like one portion at a time?? or do you eat a bite of everything ??

for me, i like to eat one thing at a time..like for example, if i have lasagne, salad and garlic toast on my plate, i'll eat one thing at a time. I finish the lasagne first, then i finish the salad, then i eat the garlic bread last. One food item at a time:)

For some reason i don't enjoy eating any where other than the dinning table.

I find it kinda stupid when i go to a resturant and order a burger with fries or a club sandwich then they bring along with it fork and knife..

It all depends on what I'm eating and where I'm eating.

When I'm in Australia, the only place I would eat with my hands would be if I was having dinner over at a friends or something where we would all be sitting on the floor.

Back home, I always use my hands when I'm at my Grandmas (it just comes naturally there :p) and whenever we're out with the guys at a traditional restaurant (al-3alam al-3arabi, bin 3ateeq, ofair, umm il-zamayem... I should stop I'm getting hungry).


But sometimes it's hard resisting eating with your hands when you have 3aaaiiiiiiishhhh and la7aaaaaaaaam (riiiiiiiice and meaaaaaat haha) in front of you :shy:

In regards to what to eat first if I have a burger and fries I always eat my fries first then my burger. Rarely do I mix the two by taking a bite here a bite there.

My daughter can easily eat with a pair of chopsticks. She bought some really cute ones when she was in Japan. When I was stationed in S. Korea I would use the chopsticks.

I prefer eating on the table ofcourse. And my parents would kill me if I didnt eat with cutlery, so I take advantage of the fact that I live abroad and eat with my hands, even if it was casserole.. sick eh? hahahaha

At home: I eat with my right hand except for desserts unless its a plain cake I'd use my hand and I perfer table than sitting down.

When we go over to al balad: I'll just follow the routine over there which is (women's group one big plate of rice and they all dig in) It can be scary sometimes xD... yet I still love being there and respeact the way things go :D

I have to admit that to me the best is eating with many people on one big plate. I only get to do that in weddings. Last time, which was last Feb, I shared a plate with 4 women I've never met before.

One woman saw that the piece of chicken I was eating was about to finish so she gave me a new piece and said: "Here, habibti, eat more."

Eating together on one plate brings people closer. Some women who ate with me on a plate for lunch the previous day saw me with my mother and turned out to know her.

It's a nice thing to be able to step up to a person and say: "Is this your daughter? I met her! We ate together!" and then them being able to reply: "Yes! I can't thank her enough for passing me the yougurt for my rice."
