View Full Version : thanks......... but i hate it!
i think it happens a lot of times when u get a gift that u totally didnt like, eg the color or it was just ugly ur simply coz you so dont need it!
it was very thoughtful of them to get you something but u just cant stand it..
what do u do then?
just keep it somewhere u cant see it?
give it to some1 that might like it?
give it away for charity?
???
Superbia 20-04-08, 02:17 PM Either give it to someone who will make use of it, or just leave it laying around..
sameerb1 20-04-08, 02:23 PM i never not like gifts...i always keep them and take good care of them...
i was gifted a pencil when i was 16 and still have that pencil with me and its never been used...
Calla Lilly 20-04-08, 03:08 PM ^;D hmm i love my gifts no matter what too ..
but there was this one incidence where i got a gift that just was NOT myy taste at ALL, i used it anyway because it was a gift and i didnt want the person who got it to think i didnt like it ;P
all gifts appreciated though
EvilFire 20-04-08, 03:15 PM Its ridicules to give away a gift! It’s some thing priceless because that X person remembered your event and thinks that you add a value in his/her life.
I always keep'm and I even keep the rapping.
gifts? i neva get em from anyone! if i get a gift, i'll love dat person!!! n wateva it is, be it a pink ferrari, i'll love it! :D
minerva 20-04-08, 03:45 PM i get so much crap as presents, i give them out or throw them away. got no space for rubbish. the stuff i like, i keep.

:XD: That made me crack up...
I think I give them away
may tulip 20-04-08, 03:58 PM it's the thought that counts more. I personally keep them even if I dont like them. You never know maybe that gift would be the last one from that person.
minerva 20-04-08, 03:59 PM lol, being a teacher, sometimes mums get me the cheapest and the tackiest of presents (like a small made in china porcelain bit of something) or something from their own cupboard, wrap it up, and give it to me for xmas or whatever.
i think if they just spend half the money and buy me a card, i'll appreciate it more.
let me show you what i mean, and youll sympathise.
got this bit of shit for xmas. had to take a photo cos nobody would beleive me.

When I saw this thread, I thought of you. :hyper:
I guess you get a heck of alot of "obligatory" pressents.. stuff parents feel they HAVE to buy .. and so go for rubbish.
If I were your student, I'd get together with other kids and get you a pedicure or something like that. :D
I don't get that much rubbish.. but if I got something I didn't like (which is rare), I'd say thanks and keep it for a while.. then give it to someone who did like it. Like if it was a perfume I REALLY didn't like or clothes that are 20 years out of fashion.. or meant for a man or something... :hyper: you know.. big disasters.
minerva 20-04-08, 04:13 PM ^yes, that's what they do usually, but some mothers want to go a step ahead than other mothers, thinking it's gonna get their child a notch higher in my preference system (cos that's how their mind works) and buy me something extra. i can't beleive some people fill their houses with that tut. only good to be thrown off a high building and having fun watching it crash down below.

that's an effing plate that sits on a stand. and a candle holder. with plastic flowers stuck to them. you're supposed to put it where you keep ornaments.
you don't like it riv, i'm sure you have more taste than that. please do say you were joking.
Rossonero 20-04-08, 04:27 PM Lemme get gifts first, then come and reply to this thread :p
hey, you can make profit off it!! EBAY!! lol.
yea, im not into these things, I would prefer a Katana to keep as an ornament
*shushu* 20-04-08, 04:42 PM I wouldn't really care much, it's the thought that counts after all! I don't think I could ever give it to someone else. Charity... Maybe. Mostly though, I'd keep it with me.

it's the thought that counts.
and sometimes a present means 'a lot of lack of thought'.
Endure Whisper 20-04-08, 04:46 PM The thought counts so I appreciate it but I wouldn't use it. I might give it away.

OMG.. that is ffing ATROCIOUS
rofl!!
"Thanks.." (for this nice wrapping) :hyper:
I'll have to be completely honest and i know when u get a gift your not suppose to give it away or give it back, however if i really don't like my gift i would give it to someone who likes it i mean whats the point of keeping it if your not going to use it.

I'm not the type of person who complains or makes a fuss about what I get. Whether tremendous thought was put into the gift or none at all, I'd still be grateful. Sure, not a lot of effort might have been put in, but hey, at least you thought of me enough to get me something. Although, a simply Happy Birthday*or whatever the occasion* will do! So yeah, just the fact that you thought of getting me something is appreciated:D

ok...so what if i get you something just to ''shut your mouth up'' (as in giving a present just for the sake of it, not because you want to give a gift....
as in 'damn it's her birthday but i don't want to be bothered...i'll give her a duster from my cupboard or an old pair of trainers'.
shushu goes 'ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh that is sooooooooo sweeeeeeet thankyouuuuuuuu'.
:hyper:
i think i'd prefer a phonecall..happy birthday...enough.

LOOOL! You make it sound so ahhhh!:p There is no need to shut my mouth up, cause I don't usually insist on gifts. As mentioned earlier, a simple "happy Birthday" will do. The example you gave got me thinking... But then again, who in their right mind would get their friend an old duster or pair of trainers:p
Libellula 20-04-08, 07:21 PM If I don't like it and know I won't use it, I'd either give it to someone who doesn't mind it, donate to charity, or throw it.
PiZzaZz 20-04-08, 07:25 PM It's the thought that counts, not the thing itself.
If I got something that I couldn't stand at all, then I'd most probably tuck it away. If I found someone that would make use of it I'd give it to them but will feel bad about it, after all it was given to me and it might've been from the heart.
marianna 20-04-08, 07:31 PM My American grandma gave me stuff that was not my taste but she didn't have a lot of money. Now that she has passed I look at what she gave me and am glad I kept these gifts. I understand though sometimes you can get something and think: "WTF?" Couldn't you have put SOME thought into it?

i meant 'shut your mouth up' not in the literal way but as in 'i'm gonna give her a present so she won't say anything'. guess i mistranslated from my mother tongue. sorry..sometimes i forget you live in another country and my way of speaking with my people here is alien to you. lol....stoopid me.
the old trainers example is a good one. sometimes people give totally useless, unthoughtful presents. i had a male teacher colleague who got given lots of bottles of aftershave...i mean he never shaved.....how's that for crassness and lack of thought? he appreciated the handmade cards done by his students far better.
when i had my birthday, my class made a big 'bash' for me. each got sweets, juices, they came to school early, sneaked in the classroom and decorated it with 'happy birthday miss , and kisses drawn on bits of paper all over the classroom.
they learnt a dance and two songs, they wrote a poem that embarrassed me in a funny way...they stood up in line and gave me a kiss each and hugged me really tight like i was their mum.
no money spent but the thought there...i mean there was a whole week of planning put in....it was the best best best present i ever got in all of my life. some of them emptied their piggy banks and bought me stuff that was really tacky and ugly, but because i knew the thought behind it, i treasure the gifts the same way as if they were diamonds or an expensive handbag. get my drift....sometimes you get a present and you know they done it just to placate your birthday, sometimes you get an ugly present but you know behind it was a whole different story. those are the presents i keep, however hideous.
i usually keep them somewhere on the upper shelf of my wardrobe, and every year, i talk all the clothes, toys, gifts i don't use anymore and give it to charity. i don't throw something that is not broken away. maybe it'll suit someone else's taste.
marianna 20-04-08, 07:36 PM Love that story Minerva....very sweet and what they did simply priceless........
I think it also depends on who gave it to you.
If it's a gift from the boss or from your students or from your neighbour and it sucks big time, then why keep trash in the house?
But if it's from someone you care about, like a grandmother with bad taste or something.. I'd most likely keep it, even if it's horrible.
I have a few such items myself.
Got this big figurine thing, with a little girl on a bench.. which I hate. It's just a trap for dust. (Min, you know the one..) .. so I put it on a cupboard in the stairs, where I see it the least and clean it once a week. It was a last minute Xmas pressie from someone who should have put more time into it. Lots more time.

There's quite a few things up for smashing then.. :D
Remember that hideous half table and mirror?
Oh
My
God
I really wished I could get it under a steam roller.
Going shopping for a gift next week. This thread has made me think.
Do i get something they need.? Do i get something they would'nt buy for themselves ... :hyper:
I think i'll take them with me ... and listen! :hyper:
marianna 20-04-08, 07:43 PM Depending on who they are yeah listen....see what they need. I would much rather buy someone a gift where it is an item they cannot do without or would love to have. This past Xmas I bought gifts for my family which they could use. I in turn asked for exercise clothing (after all they DID ask me) and I received some awesome outfits for the gym.

الهدية لا تهدى ولا تباع ولا تستبدل
A gift is not to be given as gift to someone else, not to be sold and not to be exchanged.
toxic_honey 20-04-08, 10:14 PM I give it to the maid if I KNOW that I wouldnt ever Use it.. coz i think its a waste to just look at it! i keep the card which was giving with the gifts so yeah
and she can give it to someone who wants it..

hahaha when i was in the Dorm we use to do this to the gals:p we'd go around n c what the gals points out n says she liked.. n then we keep her busy.. buy her all the things she liked.. n then its from all of us.. or well from just me if it was from me only! hehehe
its always good to know that u bought somthing that they'd like n use..
it actully depends its from who.. if its from a family member then there is no way it's going into trash or given away coz im expected to use it..
eg:my aunt once bough me tops that i so hated.. i used them as PJs, n i wore them in her house so she'd feel happy.. n then they favished somehwere :p
but its from some1 that i know wont ask about it or c it .. then i might keep it till its time to clean our my things to sort out what to throw n what to give to charity..
death rose 20-04-08, 10:37 PM keep it somewhere i can see it ... it would be rude to give it to some one else ... not nice :D
