Do you normally buy them from shops, or have them designed and tailored specifically for you? Which do you prefer and why?

i have a very good tailor. i only go to him for special occasions because he's rather expensive, although he makes me look yummy.
bespoke gowns are great because they are made to measure, flatter your nice bits and disguise what you want disguised.

I used to get them tailored, but lately i've been buying instead. Although the dresses i buy are pretty plain, it saves me the hassle of going to a tailor.

I used to get them ready made but then since I got married people are expecting me to look all glittery and make me feel less dressed when my dress isn’t designed and tailored.

I stitched a few which I wore only once and some never touched.. I just hate my self in those kind of dresses,,, soooooooo not like me

Thank god I am away and missing all those weddings ..
By the time I am back I guess I wont be a newly wed anymore and wouldn’t have to be all glittery and stuff.

why should an evening gown be glittery? i think the difference between a tailor made one and a shop bought one, apart from the dress fitting you to the nearest millimetre, is the fabric. ahhhhhhh drool.....i go with ernest (the designer) and we swoon over the finest of silks and chiffons and lace. many shop bought gowns, unless you go for haute couture, are made with polyester and fabric that makes a lot of static electricity :hyper:
when i want something made, i trawl the internet and get pics of what i like....and it takes a couple of sessions for the tailor to see what's 'me' and what's 'not me'.

I used to get them tailored, but lately I'm just not bothered. I prefer the ready made ones as they fit perfectly. There are many nice shops in Dubai, I got 2 dresses from there one for my bro's wedding and another for my cousin's. I also like Aftershock in City Centre.

I always have mine tailored. For one, I can never find something ready-made that fits me well because my body is so out of proportion. Secondly, I usually know exactly what I want and it's hard to find most of the time so it's just easier to have it made from scratch to my exact specifications. I also happen to enjoy shopping for fabrics. One other perk of having something custom made for you is that it's very unlikely someone will have the exact same dress. I'd hate it if I went to an event all dressed up and someone was wearing exactly what I was!

I usually buy them, 'coz I happen to be a very lazy person and I can't be bothered to go for fittings and things getting messed up.. :inno:

Same here...I don't think I've actually had anything tailored before. Thankfully I don't have trouble finding the right fit so I just choose something quick and purchase it immediately when I'm in a hurry.

it depends on who's wedding it is.. if it was a close relative or very close friend then i might tailer it.. but if its just a wedding.. then i just buy a ready simple 1..

but i havent tailed a dress for ages now!

Tailored. Because, I always know what I want to wear to a certain occasion, the color, the design and the fabric is something I would have already picked as soon as I hear person close is getting married.

For my cousins wedding, I knew I wanted to wear a red evening gown with some sort of crystal belt. For my sisters, I knew the design, however the color was up for negotiation (but I loved the color I wore as soon as I saw it in the store). For the next important wedding in my family, I know I want to wear a baby yellow evening gown. It's like I imagine how I am going to look in my head and I've to execute it even though it is headache but the end result is always worth it :)

With my sister's wedding and the headache I went through, there were times I just wished I saw something in a store which I loved and just bought it. It would have been a relief but I never found a gown I loved. Usually, they're either too plain or too not-my-taste.

I prefer buying because I hate the headache of buying the textile, going to the tailor, come back for a fitting, do adjustments and come back for another fitting.. lol.. I just buy nowadays. The last time I stitched a dress was my wedding dress and another dress but they were at the same time. Double head ache :os
