Is it for real that there is shortage of rice? I went shopping last night at safeer and was shocked to see the number of people with sacks of rice, its like there was some sort of rush to stock up.

I buy bags of rice for less than a dollar. Those bags make up about 10 cups I would say. I have to eat rice at least 3 times a week.

good job my larder's well stocked up.
i used different 3 different kinds of rice. long grain, basmati and arborio. for different kinds. couldn't do without any of them.

Yes... Both Egypt and India have announed Banning on the exporting of rice in order to control the increasing prices of rice in local markets. both countries are known to be the the major producers of rice in the world!
So Rice will run out in the omani market as we rely mainly on India for our rice.. while their prices will hit rocket high soon :)

i LOVE Rice, but i can live without. i almost never have it while abroad, so whenever i'm home, i pig out! and strangely, i lose weight lol.

Had it yesterday and will make more today. YUM YUM. I love putting sazon in mine. This concotion has saffron in it.

its a world wide problem i guess more so in north america den anywhere else where the prices of gas leads to everything to be at a standstill!! were dieing over here everything is soooooooo expensive ... gas= cost of transportation = cost of food goes up!!

the Omani government used to buy basmati rice from india, now they r lowering the purchasing capacity, which means, stores will buy rice themselves

this will cause an increase in the rice price

believe me guys, u should think of buying lots of rice bags now, the prices r going up,,,,

I ate basmati rice and it is delicious!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also ate Kimpsa (spelling) can also make it simliar to a Puerto Rican dish I grew up with.

Omanis don't eat Egyptian rice. It's Basmati that we're addicted to. And even in Basmati there are only a couple of brands which are actual Indian Basmati. Most of the Basmati we consume in Oman is Pakistani. India's export controls on rice effect the Indians in Oman more than the Omanis because the Indians consume the other types of rice which we don't eat.

Oman has huge stocks of rice in its strategic reserves so there's no need to panic. The government sells rice from its reserves all the time. Currently it supplies rice to the company that sells Thamer rice.

But the problem is worldwide so eventually it will affect us. China, Phillipines, india, pakistan, Thailand...... all running low. But it will probably be a while before Oman runs out - a long while actually.

within 1 day price of a famous basmati (pakistani) rice rised 2 RO....
so started 17RO then now 20 RO / 40 KG!!
lets see how much will it be tomorrow?!!!

They sell basmati rice in Sainsbury's, tesco, Asda and Morrisons here .. anyone wants some? :p

Muscat: Oman is securing 200,000 tonnes of rice, enough to feed the population for two years, in an effort to help consumers cope with soaring food commodity prices, the commerce and industry minister said on Saturday.

Makboul bin Ali bin Sultan said in comments carried by the official Oman News Agency that the sultanate had also secured 50,000 tonnes of flour to meet local consumption.

Inflation is taking the shine off the rapid economic growth experienced by Gulf oil exporters, including Oman, flush with windfall oil revenues.

Annual inflation in Oman, one six Gulf oil producers, surged above 10 per cent this year for the first time in 18 years as food prices soared.

It's time to start growing rice :)

Price is rising here too... Last month alone rice price rose by 20% ...

Oman does not have the environment to grow rice...nearest place is Iraq or Pakistan!

But don't rely on pasta either...wheat prices are the worst of all in terms of food price inflation right now.

Anyway...it's a good move I guess, because without rice I think Oman will not be "the happiest place" for very long! Maybe take away chicken and tea as well and Omani life will die forever!

I remember when the Gulf war took place, all Omanies bought rice in big amounts. I still remember many families bought something like 5 X 40 Kgs sacks. This act is repeated once again these days!!


This act alone is enough to rise the price of rice regardless it's high rice due to its shortage!!

rice is so healthy. better than pasta and bread. shame there's so much trouble over it. the loss of health benefits and disasters in change of diet would be bigger than the price crises over rice.
