View Full Version : Skilled vs Routine Professions
What sort profession are you in or prefer being a part of?
I never thought of doing any routine jobs, like an employee in a bank for example, I am not belittling the profession, but in my opinion, anyone can do that sort of a job, even a high school graduate, what's the big deal in doing some paper work, opening accounts et al
On the contrary, skilled professions are what I admire, not anyone can be a doctor, an engineer or even a mechanic et al
How do you perceive professions?
NiGhTFaCe 30-03-08, 01:04 AM I do a skilled profession & I will go for it all the time.
sensation 30-03-08, 01:13 AM I would pick skilled professions :)
That's basically what engineers do... Besides I find it more interesting to be working outside the office. I tried working in an office while I was doing my training and I would get really sleepy in the afternoon! LOL :p
It just gets boring! I believe that it would be much more fun to be going around, and finishing tasks outside the office :)
minerva 30-03-08, 01:31 AM i like professions where people are active in decision making, not having to rely on instuctions. where there is a high degree of responsability and independence in the way one works.
like my job. no day is like another. that's why i survived this much.
I think every job requires some skill. I won't shoot down boring, tedious clerical work, or factory work because a) someone has to do it and b) you still need some kind of skill. Organising skills or a good eye for detail, or patience with angry customers.
Yet, I don't think I would go for that kind of job if I had any choice. Because following repetitive orders for me is just not satisfying enough.
In hairstyling, no one client is like the other. Every day is different. But some jobs are still tedious, and I'd rather do the more interesting ones and give the tedious ones to my staff. *cue evil laugh*
Oh and also, I find it very hard to not be the boss once I have been my own boss for a number of years. At least, a managerial post where I can run the work and the staff.
I like being on top.
:hyper:
I would stick to routine only if its something like teaching. Teaching IT or other technical job. Apart from that, routine leads to depression, at least for me! I remember I worked in a bank for 1 month but it felt like an year :(
I do a skilled profession & I will go for it all the time. cann't think of doin something else!
I think the ones that are performing routine jobs have a rather easy stress free life
minerva 31-03-08, 02:52 AM i think the more responsability and the more accountability you have, the more stressful the job is. teaching is the most statistically stressful job. sometimes i'd just love to be a florist. making bunches for people, selling blooms without care on who's learning and who's not, who's got problems at home, who might be abused, who's being bullied, whose not learning enough etc etc etc. and then some.

its the other way round .. routin jobs might increase the stress because there are no challanges in them.
I perfer jobs that have creativity .. and something that is not repetitve.. unfourtountly its not what I am doing now.
Pygmalion 01-04-08, 03:36 AM I think it has more to do with the profession, but we can always expand our knowledge if we wanted to.
Avoiding monotonic jobs were one does the same things over and over has almost become a necessity in Oman, the job market is not like before and it has become more competitive and so you need to practice CV development, always try not to let the last item of your CV to be more than one or two years old. No matter how happy you are with you job, never take it for granted. The job market in Oman is changing dramatically and unexpectedly.
sameerb1 01-04-08, 08:30 AM as arabian Princess said, routine jobs are more stressful than skilled one's, cuz they tend to get boring and mind gets jammed and stressed because its not being used thus most of the companies these days are going for shuffling position (job rotations) where they set periods and change the positions of staff so they wont get bored in these routine jobs and stress themselves to death.
i pity on govt employees who still havnt started shuffling on normal basis even tho sometimes they do job rotations
i am in a skilled position by the way...
