Women who drink above the government's recommended limit are 50% more likely to develop breast cancer, the Department of Health has said. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7309135.stm)

A £10m advertising campaign has been launched targeting middle-aged women who might underestimate their drinking.

A health department report, which has yet to be published, says women who drink more than 14 units of alcohol a week are at increased risk.

Cancer Research says alcohol causes about 2,000 breast cancer cases a year.

There is concern that stronger wine of up to 13% alcohol and larger 250ml glasses can make women think they are drinking less than they are. A glass can contain as much as 3.5 units of alcohol.

Ms Primarolo said professional women who drank too much had "gone under the radar" for a long time.

"It's fair to say that most women don't know how much they're drinking," she said.

"They don't know how many units they drinking. And don't know that, at 3.5 units, that large glass of Rioja they drank last night actually took them over their daily amount."

So, 14 units a week means an average of 4 glasses of wine per week

No doubt that more awareness & campaigns are required for educating the general population

Why don't they just ban drinking alcohol ?! Most crimes come from drunk people. Most of the car accedints come from drinking alcohol. Diseases come from it as well. When will they ever learn that alcohol is just a sweet poison. ( If it's sweet as they say ) And isn't grape juice enough ? :D

ad nauseam....
not everybody who drinks gets drunk.
some people who never touched a drink all their life take half a shandy and get legless, because they are intolerant of it.

i can drink and not cause any crime, or get sick, because there is something called moderation.
some doctors argue that drinking in moderation is good. like red wine is good for the heart. a glass a day is not going to kill you.
and yes, a good wine tastes lovely.

I drink once in a blue moon but I don't do it to get drunk. Who wants a hangover anyway? This study seems to be more for women who are heavy drinkers and besides....genetic research shows you really have to be predisposed to cancer in order to get it. Alcohol, smoking, being on birth control, pollution, second hand smoke, additives in foods....all these things are contributing environmental factors that come into our bodies that trigger this predisposition of genetic mutation of genes to cause cancer.

What do they mean though by 14 units? Glasses? Liters? Sips? This is significant as far as intake.
