MUSCAT — Sabco Media, aimed at providing a broader selection of programming for an increasingly sophisticated audience, launched its ‘Al Wisal’ Arabic FM radio channel, a brand new radio station with a motto ‘talk less, play more (music)’, at 12 last night. Al Wisal, the first of its kind in the Sultanate, promises to be a lifeline that binds listeners to the expanding world of Arabic music and will also serve as a source of information for them. The new channel is aired on 96.5 FM.

Addressing a press conference earlier yesterday at the Diplomatic Club to announce the launch, Sayyid Khalid bin Hamad al Busaidy, Chairman, Sabco Media, said the channel will be an important part of the Sultanate’s media development after the grant of licences for private radio stations by the Ministry of Information and will look to evolve such type of communicative media to the next stage.

Sayyid Khalid said that Al Wisal will be targeting to woo the young. “We will be targeting those people between the age group of 18 to 40 years, Arabic speaking, modern and stylish, individualistic, adventurous, impulsive and interactive,” he said. “Any successful radio station has to cater to the needs of its listener. Their needs in terms of information, entertainment and news about events around town should be met. We hope to present a judicious mix of those needs in a very creative, interesting and attractive manner so that our listeners get hooked on to our station,” he added.

On radio market in Oman, Sayyid Khalid said: “The market is still big for this field. As for Al Wisal, meaning connectivity, we will be reaching to our listeners before they reach to us.” Hoping to stand out on its own, the objective of the channel will primarily be playing music with its own unique niche in the listener-friendly market. Al Wisal will also be heard online at www.wisal.fm.

Nadim Attieh, General Manger, Al Wisal radio station, said: “It is set to be the ‘Next big thing’ to listeners in Oman. Al Wisal will be for those who are fed up with stations that talk more and play less music.” “We promise to provide the best of service — and we hope that our music will suit the target market. We know we can do wonders, and we are supported by a well-established infrastructure. The radio station hopes to boost interest in music among the youth of Oman and also keep alive many traditions that are unique to Oman and this region,” he added.

Nadim noted that although there is a definite lean towards women, men will not be excluded at all. With the concept of infotainment in mind, the station will not just play music and air chat shows, but will go about making it a way of life with the youth of Oman. Sabco Media, supported by a wealth of experience and knowledge of its parent company, Sabco Group, is a media solutions provider that specialises in radio and TV operations and aims to offer the residents of Oman and the region the very latest in global media communications.

Their website is impressive, I'll give it a listen, Hala fm has too many talk shows and plays repetitive songs.

I think all the radio stations here play more music than broadcasting shows, so nothing new. I listened a bit to it, I see it like the Hala FM, especially that guy's voice, are they using the same guy?!

Hala FM is all talk shows, I didn't come across any talk show in wisal yet.

Hala has shows/programs that play music, so its more music than talk. Al Wisal is still under test broadcasting, so for sure you won't find shows for now.

So far, the only decent FM station is Hi FM & the only decent thing on 90.4 FM is Faiq on the mic

When you tune in to the rest of stations, all you find is a Maxima driver or a Taxi driver of Echo talking his usual nonsense & stupid poetry

That was AL-Shabab FM not Wisal. They've (Shabab Fm) been playing anasheed in between the normal songs. Wisal have been playing normal music, good music If I may add. It's refreshing.

Not a fan of arabic music but this is a step forward, I hope for more English stations that play chart shows and feature proper Radio hosts and DJ's.

is there any difference? any unique show! new style?

90.4 is Oman Radio's English Program
100 is Oman Radio's Shabab Program (that's really what they call it)

102.7 is Hala FM - the private Arabic station from OHI
95.9 is Hi FM - the English station from OHI
96.6 is Al Wisal FM - the private Arabic station from Sabco which promises more music, less talk

As far as I know there are no other private stations on the way.

I found it boring, there is no diversity in songs. They play more khaleeji songs which I am not a big fan of . :bored:
I prefer Hala FM.

Dear All,

I'm Safee Al-Saudi, I work with Al-Wisal 96.5 FM.
I've read your posts and i thank everyone that thought this is a good radio.

i just wanted to clarify something. we have scheduled some Islamic songs to be played during the prayer times. and we scheduled even more for (Al-Mawlid Al-Nabawi). the idea is to respect this time because its very important to most of the people.

about the talk shows, we started today the morning show that starts at 6:30am and ends at 10:00am. its hosted by 2 presenters, Laure from Lebanon and Monira from Oman. the Less Talk policy is meant to deliver more music and less talking.

about the Music (Khaliji Vs Other Arabic), we are trying to satisfy the largest number of people by playing more than one genre like Khaliji, Lebanese, Egyptian and more. so, hope you all will like it.

we really appreciate your feedback and suggestions. if you have any, please send it to info@wisal.fm or even you can SMS it to 96059605.

Best Regards

Safee Al-Saudi

Its Arabic radio station, why would you ask for English?! :os

Turn on Oman English FM 90.4 or Hi FM 95.9.

Mr. Safee, thanks for your feedback .. that by itself is a good start :)

I think it is very good to put some Dua during prayer times. First, it would inform me as a listener that prayer time has come. Second, it would show me that the channel respect prayer times.
