MUSCAT — Sabco Media, aimed at providing a broader selection of programming for an increasingly sophisticated audience, launched its ‘Al Wisal’ Arabic FM radio channel, a brand new radio station with a motto ‘talk less, play more (music)’, at 12 last night. Al Wisal, the first of its kind in the Sultanate, promises to be a lifeline that binds listeners to the expanding world of Arabic music and will also serve as a source of information for them. The new channel is aired on 96.5 FM.
Addressing a press conference earlier yesterday at the Diplomatic Club to announce the launch, Sayyid Khalid bin Hamad al Busaidy, Chairman, Sabco Media, said the channel will be an important part of the Sultanate’s media development after the grant of licences for private radio stations by the Ministry of Information and will look to evolve such type of communicative media to the next stage.
Sayyid Khalid said that Al Wisal will be targeting to woo the young. “We will be targeting those people between the age group of 18 to 40 years, Arabic speaking, modern and stylish, individualistic, adventurous, impulsive and interactive,” he said. “Any successful radio station has to cater to the needs of its listener. Their needs in terms of information, entertainment and news about events around town should be met. We hope to present a judicious mix of those needs in a very creative, interesting and attractive manner so that our listeners get hooked on to our station,” he added.
On radio market in Oman, Sayyid Khalid said: “The market is still big for this field. As for Al Wisal, meaning connectivity, we will be reaching to our listeners before they reach to us.” Hoping to stand out on its own, the objective of the channel will primarily be playing music with its own unique niche in the listener-friendly market. Al Wisal will also be heard online at www.wisal.fm.
Nadim Attieh, General Manger, Al Wisal radio station, said: “It is set to be the ‘Next big thing’ to listeners in Oman. Al Wisal will be for those who are fed up with stations that talk more and play less music.” “We promise to provide the best of service — and we hope that our music will suit the target market. We know we can do wonders, and we are supported by a well-established infrastructure. The radio station hopes to boost interest in music among the youth of Oman and also keep alive many traditions that are unique to Oman and this region,” he added.
Nadim noted that although there is a definite lean towards women, men will not be excluded at all. With the concept of infotainment in mind, the station will not just play music and air chat shows, but will go about making it a way of life with the youth of Oman. Sabco Media, supported by a wealth of experience and knowledge of its parent company, Sabco Group, is a media solutions provider that specialises in radio and TV operations and aims to offer the residents of Oman and the region the very latest in global media communications.
