Oman Wastewater Services Company (OWSC) is exploring opportunities to develop the Al Ansab lagoons (settling ponds) so that the lagoons can become a site of significant importance for environmental education, nature conservation and recreation in Oman. To achieve this, OWSC propose to develop the Al Ansab lagoons into a multi-functional visitor centre and site of special scientific interest.
The lagoons at Al Ansab, owned by the OWSC, are of national and international nature conservation importance, and with excellent potential for developing into a totally unique and innovative multi-functional recreational, educational and eco-tourism centre.
The development of the Al Ansab lagoons is an integral component of OWSC's commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainability. With over 200 different bird species at the lagoons the site is ideally positioned for making into a centre of excellence for nature conservation and environmental awareness.
Core to the success of the development is the management of the water resources to maintain the existing and establish new lagoons for bird conservation. But also, through the establishment of a visitor centre and creation of scenic landscapes showcasing the native plants of Oman, the lagoons can not only act as a centre for eco-tourism and sustainability, but also a way of exhibiting old traditional Omani styles, designs, art and crafts.
The objectives in the development of the lagoons are:
•To protect and manage the lagoons’ hydrological regime and ensure that pollution does not occur from or to the wider environment;
•To provide facilities for recreation and eco-tourism which are sustainable and use old traditional Omani building design;
•To establish environmental education resources which would contribute towards the national targets for increasing environmental and sustainability awareness amongst Omani people, and;
•To ensure that the lagoons and their associated habitats are protected and managed as a site of nature conservation importance, in particular for breeding and passage migrant bird species.
