This meight be an old news, but it is new to to me. I just read it.

Dualised road to feature six new 'wadi bridges'
MUSCAT -- A joint venture of Towell Construction and India's Simplex Infrastructures Limited has been awarded a contract by Muscat Municipality to implement the Seeb Corniche road project at a cost of RO 29 million. The 12-kilometre project, complete with six new 'wadi bridges', will significantly enhance Seeb's seaside appeal, as well as serve as a new adornment in the wilayat's rapidly developing civil infrastructure.

Work on the dualised coastal road, which suffered major damage during last June's adverse weather conditions, is now under way, according to Amitabh Mundhra, Director of Simplex Infrastructures. A leading provider of infrastructure and construction services in India and abroad, Simplex has teamed up with well-known Omani business-house W J Towell for a share of Oman's increasingly lucrative civil construction business.

"We are delighted to launch our presence here in Oman in partnership with W J Towell. The Seeb Corniche road project -- our maiden venture in Oman -- will be a showcase and a stepping stone for Simplex which, along with its joint venture partner, will be looking to undertake many other such projects in the Sultanate," Mundhra told the Observer in an interview also attended by Ivor Braganza, CEO, W J Towell & Co (Property & Construction).

As part of the road project, the contractor will build six wadi bridges that will span flood channels that intersect the corniche road en route to the sea. The largest of these bridges will be around 360 metres long, while all six bridges will run a total length of about one kilometre. Badal Rudra, Technical Director of Simplex Infrastructures, said the bridges will be essentially pre-stressed, precast girder structures set on pier caps and piled foundations. Rock rivetments will help secure the road from the seaside, while ripraps will be provided on the landside.

When completed, by mid-2009, the road will be robust enough to withstand possible damage in future flood events, as well as wave action. For Simplex Infrastructures, the Seeb road project marks its first foray into the Sultanate. The company has executed over 2,100 major projects in India and abroad, including dozens of thermal power projects, steel plants, petrochemical ventures, and numerous bridge, road and railway projects in India.

In the region, Simplex has been expanding its presence with several prestigious projects to its credit, chiefly in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. It was recently awarded a contract for the construction of the Qatalum Thermal Power Plant in Qatar, as well as a major engineering-procurement-construction (EPC) contract for Gulf Cement. Simplex has also executed a number of civil projects around the Gulf region, involving high-end commercial buildings, residential projects and piling and foundation works.

"We wish to combine our expertise in infrastructure development, with the capabilities of our successful partner here in Oman, to deliver our services to this market," said Mundhra. "Oman is a developing and emerging economy, which makes it an opportune time for us to make an entry here. We are already looking at a host of other projects and infrastructure ventures, along with W J Towell. Simplex has a strong commitment to having a long-term presence in Oman. We are in the process of setting up a permanent office here." W S Atkins are consultants for the Seeb Corniche road project.

Seeb corniche is much nicer than Al-Shatti Corniche (Al-Shatti Road). It's wider, got better lighting and it only lacks one thing: Café's and Restaurants.
