THE seven deadly sins have grown to at least 14 after the Vatican updated its 1400-year-old list of the worst moral failures to reflect the modern world.

Let us see (from above link):

After 1,500 years the Vatican has brought the seven deadly sins up to date by adding seven new ones for the age of globalisation. The list, published yesterday in L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, came as the Pope deplored the “decreasing sense of sin” in today’s “securalised world” and the falling numbers of Roman Catholics going to confession.

The Catholic Church divides sins into venial, or less serious, sins and mortal sins, which threaten the soul with eternal damnation unless absolved before death through confession and penitence.

It holds mortal sins to be “grave violations of the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes”, including murder, contraception, abortion, perjury, adultery and lust.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that “immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into Hell”.

Why they will go to hell if Jesus died for thier sins? I think there is contradiction.

If people are told as long you commit sin but go to confession then it's ok then such sins will keep increasing, they have an excuse to commit sins.

And it is interesting that few Christians are going to confession, maybe the whole thing doesn't make sense to them, one will say how can I confess my sins to a human being like me who can commit sins also?

Last night when I was driving home I was listening to the BBC and I was like what are they talking about !

Modern sins for modern times (http://search.bbc.co.uk/cgi-bin/search/results.pl?scope=all&tab=av&recipe=all&q=Modern+sins+&x=14&y=13)

The Vatican has brought up to date the traditional seven deadly sins by adding seven modern mortal sins it claims are becoming prevalent in what it calls an era of "unstoppable globalisation".

ORIGINAL DEADLY SINS

1* Pride
2* Envy
3* Gluttony
4* Lust
5* Anger
6* Greed
7* Sloth

MODERN EVILS

1* Environmental pollution
2* Genetic manipulation
3* Accumulating excessive wealth
4* Inflicting poverty
5* Drug trafficking and consumption
6* Morally debatable experiments
7* Violation of fundamental rights of human nature

Fewer confessions and new sins (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7287071.stm)

The modern evils are just extentions of the original seven deadly sins.

All of the modern evil 7 listed derive from those original because they all have a hand in it. What the Vatican was stating was that these modern sins are based upon the original and that human beings need to realize that their actions are causing such. For me I already knew this. I always thought these modern evils were extentions from the original seven.

Who stated the original sins ?? and based on what ??

Christians are exhorted to adhere to the seven holy virtues: chastity, abstinence, temperance, diligence, patience, kindness and humility.

According to Bishop Gianfranco Girotti, head of the Apostolic Penitentiary, the Vatican body which oversees confessions and plenary indulgences, said “You offend God not only by stealing, blaspheming or coveting your neighbour’s wife, but also by ruining the environment, carrying out morally debatable scientific experiments, or allowing genetic manipulations which alter DNA or compromise embryos,”

The Original Deadly Sins and their punishments:

Pride Broken on the wheel
Envy Put in freezing water
Gluttony Forced to eat rats, toads, and snakes
Lust Smothered in fire and brimstone
Anger Dismembered alive
Greed Put in cauldrons of boiling oil
SlothThrown in snake pits

The Pope states: "Those who trust in themselves and in their own merits are, as it were, blinded by their own ‘I’, and their hearts harden in sin. Those who recognise themselves as weak and sinful entrust themselves to God, and from Him obtain grace and forgiveness.

The seven deadly sins, also known as the capital vices or cardinal sins, are a classification of vices that were originally used in early Christian teachings to educate and instruct followers concerning (immoral) fallen man's tendency to sin. The Roman Catholic Church divided sin into two principal categories: "venial", which are relatively minor, and could be forgiven through any sacrament of the Church, and the more severe "capital" or mortal sin. Mortal sins destroyed the life of grace, and created the threat of eternal damnation unless either absolved through the sacrament of confession, or forgiven through perfect contrition on the part of the penitent.

Why you need to worry about sins if Jesus already paid for it in advance?

PS: Storm, there is a thread already about this topic.

This was not a list put out by the Vatican.

This was taken from an interview that Monsignor Gianfranco Girotti gave to the L'Osservatore Romano in which he was questioned about new forms of social sins in this age of globalisation.

But even if the Vatican has isssued this list, there's nothing wrong in it.

You are welcome.

Drinking alcohol also can be deadly, why is it not added to the list?

It is included in Gluttony when you get drunk is a sin because you are doing something in excess. I think I expounded on this before but obviously some people have dense heads.

Accumulating excessive wealth

Based on that, will Bill gates go to hell?

Who knows maybe even the Saud family in Saudi will go to Hell with their excessive wealth and greed.

Same argument can be applied to other things, example you can use drugs in moderate but not in excess.

marianna

Not about whether or not I have the answer it is about attacking Christianity as always and for me to get mad especially at this time is just not right. I don't have the patience to keep drilling into some of you people about the way we worship. Go talk to a priest.

There is nothing wrong in having wealth in Islam, as far as the source of it is halal and the person is giving zakah, charity, etc.

Hmmm...I believe Bill Gates is doing that and the church recognizes alms.

So how can "Accumulating excessive wealth" be a deadly sin?

marianna
12-03-08, 10:37 PM
When it is used for selfish means and no help is given to the poor and doesn't add to the quality of society in general. We don't live in vacuums which people tend to forget. We all have to get along and we all need to contribute back to society in some way irregardless of our income, beliefs, and social standing.

No problem, he can go to a priest and confess. That is your belief I believe, right?

You know, if you were not on a crusade to crush Christians and drag the religion through the mud I would debate but I have seen far too often misleading and hurtful postings by you and some others here so I won't get baited into this. PM Jeff and have him explain it for you.

Such a harsh words from you, the thing is it's confusing, the article says that less confessions, while a new deadly sin added like for example accumulating excessive wealth, so it looks like the church is trying to bring people to confess.

I wonder why the amount of people confessing going down? what are the rout causes of it?

The modern evil of accumulating excessive wealth is not quite modern, Jesus :PBUH: talked about it ages ago

Woe to you who are rich, For you have received your consolation Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God
Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves money belts which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near nor moth destroys

these sins shouldn't be listed as sins, it is so sinful to make them as new sins because in the bible it does not say 'thou shalt not pollute' 'thou shalt not get stinkingly rich over the backs of slave labour' etc etc.

Mini, these aren't new sins.

This is just an overeaching press creating news when there is none.

The Vatican DID NOT release this list.. this was taken from an interview some priest gave.
