ok, i'll try to post this without much emotion because it's troubling me, i couldn't sleep a wink last night...

my younger daughter at age 2 always had delayed speech. she used to get ear infections often, but since she wasn't too communicative, always stubborn and screamy, we used to think she was a moody little brat lol.
anyway, we used to take her to the pediatrician, who used to diagnose ear infection, give her antibiotics, she used to be fine, come the appointment at ENT, she used to get the all clear.
until one day her infection got so bad that the pediatrician phoned an ear-nose-throat (ent) specialist friend of his to get my 'bay' (her nickname) to get seen straight away.
she was put on more antibiotics, at age 3, and she had an operation to remove her adenoids, and her tonsils, and have her ears drained.
it was like a miracle. her speech, her mood, her behaviour changed within a week. the doctor told us 'she was like a kid put into a room full of chinese speaking people, no wonder she was always frustrated'. because of the fluid accumulating behind her ears, not all sounds were getting through properly.
my bay has really improved since then...
this week she gets ear ache again. took her to her pediatrician who told me her ears are severely inflamed.
he put her on antibiotics (klacid) on nose drops (otrivine) to open the ear-nose canal, and he told me that after the klacid finishes, i have to put her on zyrtec for a whole month..

i really hate putting my kids on medicine. my bay hasn't had antibiotics for 6 years..since her 'miracle' operation.

he told me if the zyrtec fails, and she keeps getting inflamed, she will need to go back to ent for drainage.

i have noticed that her schoolwork this week had really really fallen behind. i had a bad go at her...thought she was being careless, but she didn't feel any pain till yesterday...seems she couldn't follow the lessons properly, poor thing, she couldn't hear properly and she didn't realise.

is there a way out of this? if i keep sending her to a doctor every two weeks for the rest of her life, i don't care about the costs, i'd rather starve, will she be ok.

before she had the operation, she got so bad her eardrums were close to bursting..she could have resulted deaf.

please sabla doctors, give me your take on this.

I have a very close friend whose boy gets allot of ear infections and what she had done was to have tubes put in his ears for drainage. Sometimes the natural fluid we get in our ears does not drain proprely for some and this is especially prevelant in kids. I would highly suggest seeing someone about this option and see what they can do.

Here's a site where people describe home remedies for things, and I've linked straight to the ear problem page http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/earache.html

posters reply to say if it worked or not, and the "not" comes under NAY.

one of most popular ones on the page is hydrogen peroxide but if you choose that one then I want you to read these two warnings I found on a different page of the same site:

FOOD GRADE WARNINGS:

4/18/2006: John from Sault Ste Marie, MI writes, "I'd be very wary of recommending that anyone use 35% hydrogen peroxide unless they've had HAZMAT training or the equivalent. At that concentration H2O2 is extremely corrosive and causes severe burns; in other words, it's a very hazardous chemical that even professional chemists (and I am one) must handle using appropriate safety equipment (rubber gloves, safety goggles, protective lab coat). I know this from experience because I was badly burned by 35% H2O2 while carrying out chemistry research. It's irresponsible to imply that this stuff is harmless and to recommend it to people who have no experience handling hazardous materials."

ADDITIONAL WARNING NOTE:

Please be very careful when transporting food grade hydrogen peroxide after the bottle has been opened. Make sure you keep the bottle upright. Once the seal has been removed upon opening, these caps can leak. Food grade will cause the skin to burn and turn white. Yes, we learned the hard way! Luckily, skin will return to normal after 30 minutes or less if you rinse off the peroxide quickly. By the way, the same whitening of skin effect happens when you dip your fingertips in drugstore 3% H202 for a minute or more. It too goes away within 30 minutes...

Am sorry to hear about your daughter.

I am not a doctor, but one thing I can suggest is try to get a second and third opinion.

I hope things work out fine for her

she's a lot better today. i keep talking to her in a really low voice to 'test' her hearing lol. i guess she might have gromits put in (little tubes) as marianna said, if all the medicine fails. she gets a bit of pain in her ears when she sneezes hard.

Hi Minerva, first of all, it's nothing serious but definitely it's a very distressing condition

Your daughter is suffering from chronic otitis media (infection of the middle ear) & as there is hearing impairment, there is no doubt that she is having effusion as well (collection of think fluid), this condition is also known as glue ear which is why she has hearing difficulty

For such conditions, when they do not respond to antibiotics, grommet insertion is carried out
