View Full Version : Fertility Centers
Endure Whisper 02-03-08, 11:01 AM Are there any fertility specialized centers in Oman?
Like do they perform "tube babies" and "changing genes and chromosomes (if that's what they call changing blood group, eye color, etc)" in Oman?
If there aren't any, is there anywhere where one could go for advice and consultancy to get information about other international fertility clinics?
Hope there are some in Oman :)
Pen_it_Black 02-03-08, 12:38 PM Not sure of any fertility centres in Oman.
But why would you wanna change how your baby looks? (I'm assuming that's the reason)
Endure Whisper 02-03-08, 01:16 PM Why?
Personal reasons that I think is best for the baby.

Yes, the ones I know performe IVF "tube babies" are Adbanced Fertility Center in Al Khuwair the road opposite to Zakher and Muscat Hospital.
Regarding Genes Modification I am not sure, but you can check with them. I urge you to consult religious authority about your case before you do anything too just to be on the safe side.
Endure Whisper 03-03-08, 08:40 AM Thanks Arabian Princess :)
FluidNutria 04-03-08, 07:44 PM I do not advise you to go to one in Oman (A) Its a baby your dealing with, not which salon does the best eyebrows! I suggest you look for some place where they are actively dealing with situations such as yours, Oman's still new into technology.

If you are talking about IVF then it has been done many times here .. I dont think she should worry from that side.
Endure Whisper 06-03-08, 11:13 AM ^ Can IVF do genes modification? or are they two separate procedureS?
Why?
Personal reasons that I think is best for the baby.
Allah knows better what is best for the baby.
هُوَ الَّذِي يُصَوِّرُكُمْ فِي الْأَرْحَامِ كَيْفَ يَشَاءُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ
He it is Who shapes you in the wombs as He wills. Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.

If I am not mistaken, they are two different procedures. However, if you want genetic modifications you will have to do IVF but you can do IVF without genetic modifications.
Endure Whisper 07-03-08, 01:07 AM Icey, thanks for the comment, but I am not asking about the religious view over here and that's the reason I put this thread in the health sabla.
Thanks AP for the clarification :)

have you (or whoever you are talking about) considered going abroad?
i have a friend of mine who's a carrier for muscular dystrophy...she wants her genes scanned for any possibility before having a child....unchecked it could mean a muscular dystrophy boy (who'll die at age 25 max) or a totally healthy muscular dystrophy boy free from the gene, 50% chance of a carrier girl....
if you or your friend have any such worries, they are totally justified in giving the child the best possible outcome for a good life.
Endure Whisper 07-03-08, 01:16 AM ^ Thanks minerva :)
Of course, going abroad has already been brought to the table, it's just that the information are needed. Where to go? How good are they? Is it okay to go all the way there and then get on a plane and get back to home, or should the woman stay there for a couple of months, etc..? These details are needed. If you could provide them here, or privately, I'm going to appreciate it!
Dam3eti 07-03-08, 02:17 AM Can everything be modified in the genes? Like are these experiments successful? If they were then wouldn't inherited diseases be cured?

don't know if genes can be modified, but eggs can get tested for genetic diseases.

I know for a fact they could be modified, but they are expensive and not very assuring that it could work. My aunt's friend had to go through the procedure 5 times in Belgium to have kids (she made them twins) without sickle cell disease.
You have to be determined and prepared for all the failed results to re-do it.
Dam3eti 07-03-08, 07:39 PM ^If that is true then that's great! I'm a sickle cell carrier and this is good news.
^If that is true then that's great! I'm a sickle cell carrier and this is good news.
Why this is good news? It is not good news
The good news is that if you marry someone who doesn't suffer from or carry sickle cell, then all your future kids will be healthy
Dam3eti 07-03-08, 10:02 PM Well be4 getting married I'll send out a questionnaire to see who's a carrier n who's not yeh? :p

Since that's the option you opted for, make sure you get them screened for Thalassaemia as well (more serious than sickle cell)
The following child suffers from sickle cell, his parents had the option to prevent it, but they were too selfish

Dam3eti 07-03-08, 11:35 PM ^I don't think parents are selfish. I think they didn't know about the disease, many people don't know about it. Anyway thanks for your comment.

It's only selfish when the parents know they're both sickle cell carriers and yet they have babies without a care in the world, without doing things to ensure that their kids are sickle cell free. Most of the sickle cell people I know were a product of ignorance, their parents didn't know, but one of them I just want to strangle. He married his first wife where both of them were sickle cell carriers and obviously, their first daughter had sickle cell. They got divorced only for the man to marry another woman, and he has 3 sickle cell children from his second marriage. Now that he knew about the disease could he not check whether his 2nd wife was a sickle cell carrier before he married her? Now that is selfish!
^If that is true then that's great! I'm a sickle cell carrier and this is good news.
But it is still very expensive and the procedure is long and tiring. And there is no guarantee you can have babies this way. You're better off trying to marry someone who is sickle cell free. And to ensure that, ask the guy who is interested in you whether he is a sickle cell carrier, if he is, don't allow yourself to consider him or fall for him.
Dam3eti 08-03-08, 07:49 PM ^I don't think I would marry a carrier, my parents wouldn't allow it anyway. I was just saying that if those procedures do exist then it is good news for all of the sickle cell carriers in case they do fall for a carrier.
With the current awareness that we have & thanks to Allah & his Majesty, we have free tests & screening all over the country, I myself have been to high schools for promoting the screening, ministry of health issued all the those in high school a card that mentions their blood group, their state for sickle cell, thalassaemia & G6PD
Above all, practically speaking, certain families do have it more than others, so they can screen themselves rather being lazy or ignorant about the whole issue, I won't buy the saying of some that we never knew about it, sickle cell is common in Oman, especially among the Balushis & Zanzibaris (or having any links with them through marriage)

I was impressed that when I went to open my green card (pregnancy card), they had to take blood tests to check those blood disorders.
