View Full Version : Yawning while reading Quran
I am not sure where to put this thread so mod's feel free to move it wherever is appropriate.
Well :hmm:…. I have noticed lately that whenever I'm reading or listening to a Quran tape just before I go to sleep, like last night, I thought I would read some Quran till I fall asleep but as I was reading Quran, I felt sleepy and started yawning and yawning frequently but when I laid in bed, I found myself not sleepy at all and stopped yawning. I know this wont stop me from reading on anyway.
Anyone is experiencing an annoying shaytan trying to distract you while reading Quran or listening to a tape?
marianna 27-02-08, 11:16 PM I think it is normal to yawn when reading. It can happen anytime. Doesn't mean you are being disrespectful.
^^ but I dont yawn frequently when I read my books.
marianna 27-02-08, 11:24 PM Reasons why people yawn:
Yawning has always been known to lots of people that it's a sign of sleepiness. Being sleepy is not always the only reason our body yawns there are other reasons why we yawn. First of all yawning is a non verbal reflex message that tells us something about our body, but what exactly it tells us is not known. Yawning mostly will occur depending upon where you are and what you are doing. For an example you can yawn because you are in a very boring place and nothing there interest you, this can cause you to yawn because of boredom. People tends to yawn anytime of the day or night everyday. Just this reason alone will let you know that yawning dosen't always relate to sleepiness. Being tired, restless, and depressed can all be reasons why people yawn. Yawning being contagious is a factor, but no one knows why it's contagiuous.

Libellula 27-02-08, 11:41 PM You're not the only one..
If I'm about to go to bed and I read the Qur'an, I'll start yawning and fall asleep a short while later, while if I pick up the novel I'm currently reading, I can read for hours before I put it down and finally go to bed.
I think it depends on your interest in something - the more boring something is, the more likely you are to yawn and feel sleepy. I personally don't read the Qur'an for entertainment or because I enjoy it, I read it because I know I should and I want the good deeds associated with reading it.
MissKindy 27-02-08, 11:54 PM I think it is the shaytan trying to distract us because it happens to me too
I start reading before sleeping and after 10 mins or so i start yawning and think im falling asleep the moment i put my head on the pillow im fresh again..So nowadays i just read read before sleeping for 10 mins then read any boring book till im sleepy ..
But this only happens if im about to sleep...during day hours i never yawn:)

Evana and Liellula,
I advice you to read the Quran or do you prayers when you are not feeling tired and sleepy like late at night.
as evana said yawning is from the shytan "devil", and this is proven by differrent authentic hadiths.
me personally if I pray when I feel sleepy or tired I yawn a lot, so I changed that and organize my praying times to suite me when I am fully energetic and have power and active and it worked very well and the yawning has gone.
why don't you try that yourselves, try to read the Quran in early evening hours or even during the day time instead of just before going to sleep.
why yawning is contagious? as mariana said nobody knows.
Cute_Ting 28-02-08, 12:36 AM yawning is yawning We yawn cuz were tired, and u cant really stop a Yawn, how is it the devil Cloud? ^o)
marianna 28-02-08, 12:37 AM I don't think the devil is around. I think people yawn for other more reasonable reasons.
yawning is yawning We yawn cuz were tired, and u cant really stop a Yawn, how is it the devil Cloud? ^o)
if the Prophet:PBUH:said Yawning is from the devil that only have one meaning yawning is from the devil period.
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Yawning comes from the Shaytaan, so if one of you feels the urge to yawn, let him suppress it as much as he can, for if one of you says ‘ha’ (the sound made when yawning), the Shaytaan laughs.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3115; Muslim, 2994.
marianna 28-02-08, 12:46 AM Well, that is your belief of course but I think more scientific explanations are in order. People do yawn when they are bored, need more oxygen from the brain, are hungry, depressed etc. what cannot be explained is if you read about yawning or see someone yawning there is a good chance you will yawn also...there have been studies related to empathy levels among humans when people see others yawn.
amo_l_oman 28-02-08, 08:15 AM why don't you try that yourselves, try to read the Quran in early evening hours or even during the day time instead of just before going to sleep.
If you keep night prayers late, you will get more rewards but since I end up yawning I think I will follow the advice
But the last rakats of witr, you must keep them for before you go to sleep, isn't it ?
But the last rakats of witr, you must keep them for before you go to sleep, isn't it ?
Not necessary. You can pray them right after Isha prayers, no harm. But they should be the last prayers you pray in the day. Meaning that if you want to do qiyam al-layl, you should keep witr for after that. That's what I know, the members who have more knowledge here can correct me if I am wrong.
UmKhalid 28-02-08, 08:36 PM Simple: Read earlier.
God doesn't want us to tire ourselves, you can't force yourself to read when it's bedtime. Like when Zainab (Don't know which Zainab, may God be pleased with her) tied a rope in the masjid, the Prophet :PBUH: ordered it to be untied and said what means: if anyone is tired they should not force themselves to worship.
Just read the Ma'wathaat and Ayat Al Kursi and sleep.

Amo, you can pray witr rakats any time after Isha prayer as Amjad said if you don't intend to do qiyam al-layl.
for me I would rather do my witr just before fajr prayer I wake up half an hour before azan alfajr and pray my witr, and get ready for fajr prayer.
chose which method suites you and follow it.
amo_l_oman 28-02-08, 09:09 PM I do 8-10 rakats of tahajjud soon after isha, then 3 with the qunut before sleeping
Is that correct ?

mashallah mashallah mashallah without envying you that's very great "shekha"
Amo!!!
may Allah swt rewards alfirdaws ameen.
what you are doing is absoluetly correct, but any time you feel tired or sleepy and yawny you better stop praying, get to sleep wake up before fajr and finish your tahajjud and witr.
I wish I can do tahjudd or qiyam like you, I tried before but I can't continue every night doing it because I felt tired..so I stopped and I just pray two rukka'a shafe'a and one ruka'a witr just before fajr.
so what is the secret of praying tahajjud continuosely every night?
amo_l_oman 28-02-08, 10:01 PM lol I have many sins to be forgiven :D
Inshallah I can wake up like you one day and read Quran at Fajir, that's full of rewards
But the Prophet :PBUH: used to pray them all together if am not mistaken
Are you sure am not doing wrong by separating them ?
yes Amo you are right the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to pray them continuously, but don't forget he is the Prophet.
Omar al farooq (RA) used to pray witr just before fajr from what I read and the Prophet(peace be upon him) approved it.
marianna 28-02-08, 11:47 PM For me, when I read the bible from front to back I was pretty engrossed in it. Maybe because I was just so interested to learn. The key is maybe finding stuff in there also that mirrors what you are going through in life and see what answers you can find to help you out.
Cute_Ting 29-02-08, 10:46 AM Sorry clouds but i dont believe anything u said since u consider smokin okay :)
amo_l_oman 29-02-08, 10:51 AM The issue has been widely discussed in article and books .
You don't need to be a scholar to read about it and to come to your conclusions .
How about just don't read it at all?!! :hyper:
Jihad4Truth 29-02-08, 12:23 PM You probably yawn while reading the Quran for the same reason I yawn while reading the Bible.
$hooshi 29-02-08, 02:22 PM oh!I yawn 2 while readin' quran or listening 2 Quran
=$ so I guess its a normal thing,eh?
FAITH86 29-02-08, 03:01 PM I have the same problem actually, but tried to develop some habits to make reading Quran more interestig such as reading loudly and putting the Quran next to my bed all the time. Hope it works with you.
Interesting answers, as many have pointed out reading it earlier before the normal bed time is the best thing to do.
EvilFire 05-03-08, 08:35 AM Sorry clouds but i dont believe anything u said since u consider smokin okay :)
You dont have to believe in him , believe in quran and "Prophet Mohammed"
Note:That is if you are a Muslim.

Evana, I don’t think that your yawning is really related to quran, unless that is the only book you yawn when you read.
I love reading books but some times I find them boring. Some times I’m unenergetic but once I start reading a novel, I feel sleepy.
^^ Well It was the only book I yawned like for 6 times in 2 minutes while I was reading (yeah I was counting). I can only think of this happening because I don’t really pay attention to the words, while I read every word and understand of a book I know I'm gonna have exam on, lol.
why don't you try that yourselves, try to read the Quran in early evening hours or even during the day time instead of just before going to sleep.
What about because reading Quran before going to sleep is recommended to get a good and peaceful sleep? But anyways it is not working in my case, so I think I will follow the advice.:)
Thanks guys.
