News today that Oman is having to import fish from India. Oman importing fish. Does anyone else think that is totally crazy? :omg:

Where have all the fish gone? Is it because the GCC and Japanese buy them all?

From what I understand about what is going on, the seas are being overfished in many parts of the world and perhaps the govt is trying to let those fish populations build back up again before venturing out to catch more.

Well, from what I understood from this article (http://timesofoman.com/inner_cat.asp?cat=1&detail=14584&rand=MTOqpLXZI4K91YYlTg7v828ZWA), the fish is actually there and the Ministry of Fisheries is working on controlling the fish prices and making it available in the markets. So the local fish is actually still there...

Ask The Japanese and Korean fishing ships!

Ask The Japanese and Korean fishing ships!
If the government really wants to control the fish prices and make it available all over the local market, maybe it's time to stop those Japanese and Korean from catching local fish, instead of importing fish from the neighboring countries! I don't get the strategy...

I forget the numbers but in Japan fish is consumed in the millions. Sometimes the oceans are so overfished that the populations are severely depleted.

All the fish is in sold to our neighboring, exotic, "open-minded", Sky-scraping oil-barons.

Hint .. People who are originally Omani and consider the word Omani as offensive ;)

I heard Oman had some pretty good fishing grounds and excellent fish markets. What is the average price for fish there and which fish is eaten the most?

I don't think the fish have disappeared because of exporting fish elsewhere. If this is true, its extremely serious! Scientists from SQU and elsewhere must study this ASAP!

from our country untill our day.. and other countries..

This thing is 'The Week's magazine issue of the week.
I heard that they're exporting the fish to outside Oman and selling it with doubled prices.
Omani Fishermen are sitting in Muttrah Fish Souq to buy fish from the people who are in supervision of such processes, but they say that the prices are high and they sell the fish to other countries.
They say that if things remain as it is, they will shut Muttrah Fish Souq down.

Sad .. :(

I heard that Muttrah Fish Souq will be demolished soon anyway to make way for yet another hotel.

I think if the problem is exporting that's not so bad. But if its because the right fish aren't being caught in as big quantities as before, that's a huge problem. It's of course impossible to actually get the right data from the Government.

And yes, most of the fish that's exported goes to GCC. Maybe Oman will have to export their fresh fish for good prices and eat frozen Indian fish themselves! :yuk:

The job of fishermen has been Omanized and no more Omanis fishermen are fishing..

STING

^Hey is that the case really? I didn't know there were expatriate fishermen here? And when were these jobs omanized?

FAITH86
20-02-08, 12:23 PM
^ The only Omani company that has the concessionto fish in the Omani cost has Omanized more than 95% of its jobs including fishermen's jobs.

And another reason is that Omani fishermen export almost all the fish to the states neighbouring (like the UAE & KSA).

Oh no!
This is a result of over-fishing as well as those Japos.

The gov should be tighter and stop all crooks from over-fishing.

marianna

Japos? Term reminds me of the racial slur from WWII. Anyway, are there any real stats out there regarding this topic or are people making sweeping guesses?

wow that's really surprising and upsetting. I thought the fish quantity had to do with the cold weather (colder than last years).

There was a cover story on this issue in The Week, I think we can conclude that the main reasons for this is the high demand from Dubai, and a lack of decent distribution channel inside Oman!

^ KSA is also importing fish from Oman & Omanies are selling their fish to them with doubled prices.
