Gaza: Israel killed 18 Palestinians, nearly all of them Hamas militants, in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, in a raid the Palestinian Authority said was a "slap in the face" to US President George W. Bush's peace efforts.

The violence resulted in the highest number of Palestinians killed in a single day since late 2006.

The West Bank-based Palestinian government said Israel's "ugly crimes were a slap in the face" to efforts by Bush and the international community to resume peacemaking that would lead to the creation of a Palestinian state.

Israel said it mounted the operation to curb rocket attacks from Gaza.

Local medical workers and Hamas said 18 Palestinians were killed in fighting with Israeli forces in the northern part of the territory and east of Gaza City.

The violence resulted in the highest number of Palestinians killed in a single day since late 2006.

"There was a massacre today against our people, and we say to the world that our people will not remain silent against such crimes," said Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, whose Fatah faction lost control of the Gaza Strip to Hamas in June.

A volunteer from Ecuador, working on an Israeli kibbutz, or farming community, bordering the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, was killed by a Palestinian sniper near the frontier fence. Hamas claimed responsibility for the shooting.

Israeli President Shimon Peres said as long as Gaza militants continue to fire rockets into the Jewish state, "we are left without a choice but to answer and stop it".

Here's a link to the story on good ol' Fox News.

And why do you feel pity that Westerners are not totally consumed by images of the never ending Palestine-Israel conflict?

That's being lucky.:)

FOX news is called FOX for a reason. I read that J4T, its pathetic. Extremely biased. 18 Palestinians are killed but after reading that, I feel bad for the poor Israelis:

"Hamas sniper shot "
"Israeli border farm"
"leader of the Islamic Jihad military"

Each paragraph gets worst!

The Westerners are brainwashed by making them believe that Hamas is a terrorist organization.

Now see who is killing who.

The story you quote says "Hamas militants".

I don't hold with killing civilians. But fighters versus fighters is called war, not massacre.

Hmm, if you guys can get a hold of a documentry called "Death in Gaza" it's really good, it's based on a Pakistani English woman whom takes her cam crew to record what's going on and she also asks children about their feelings about all this, basically the documentry tells a lot about it and shows a clearer image of what's going on. However, through out the documentry the English camera man gets shot and sadly dies. What I found irrational is that she kept on reffering to them as "militants" and made it sound as a bad matter. For God's sake if you live in a place with injustice and surrounded with Israelians trying to take over your land, how can't you be a militant? :os

You mean tanks and helicopters versus traditional guns. How fair this war is

BTW there are some civilians among the killed

Is it so strange to understand the Israeli's side? They are people just like Palestinians.

One should empathize with both sides. If not, then that is being biased.

I understand where both sides are coming from, even if one side mistakenly blames my nation for their own problem.
